Go Kaz! I knew he could do it.
This really highlights how howard stringer was a really shitty CEO.

Wish Sony was doing well in their mobile division as well, Xperia Z series phones are fucking amazing.
To be fair, that's sort of how Microsoft operates. Because of their massive strengths in other areas, Xbox's profits and losses are almost irrelevant to how it is viewed in the greater company. However, the flip side of that is that if the people in charge don't feel like keeping Xbox around any more, they'll axe it without a second thought. Right now, Satella seems willing to give Xbox a chance, but we don't know what performance metrics he has has placed for it.That's not how a business works.
While the PS4 is performing very well, I think that the PS3's lack of performance is overstated. If you look at the pure numbers, it sold decently. It's just that people were comparing it to the sales of the Wii and the 360.Damn impressive showing overall Sony. Pretty drastic turnaround from the PS3's early life.

Consoles were relatively niche in Europe pre-PlayStation and none had passed 10 million iirc, a figure passed repeatedly in America and Japan by different machines previously. Videogames in general were still big in Europe during the 80s and early 90s thanks to micros and PC though.
I think the future of maintaining console growth (or at least stunting decline) rests on doing something similar today in Asia by converting PC gamers over to consoles. And Sony's definitely in the best position to do that.
PS3 outsold 360. Shocking how few Americans out there realize this. It outsold 360 month to month starting early on, and only took most of the generation to pass total worldwide numbers because the 360 launched a year earlier to strong success. But by most metrics on the worldwide stage, PS3 was very slightly more "successful" than 360.While the PS4 is performing very well, I think that the PS3's lack of performance is overstated. yeah, but they need to have stock Android though...I'm looking into a Moto X myself.Wish Sony was doing well in their mobile division as well, Xperia Z series phones are fucking amazing.
Seriously, this. 30 million in two years, still nipping at the PS2's heels, without a single price drop since launch.I guess the "frontloaded sales" argument should be dead now!

There's honestly no possibility that these sales are in any way "front loaded" and i'm still perplexed as to why people were so confident that was the case with zero data to back up the claim?

Why would it be sarcasm? I wouldn't read too much into these numbers, after all Xbox One is the working mans console with Halo the Star Wars of gaming.
it's only inevitable.
PS3 outsold 360
I think the "front-loaded" argument assumes the X1 and PS4 combined. That the PS4/X1 will eventually fall behind the PS3/360 in sales. Which I agree, primarily because the X1 isn't going to sell anywhere near 360 levels.Seriously, this. 30 million in two years, still nipping at the PS2's heels, without a single price drop since launch.

There isn't official numbers, until we have some you can't assure that.
zhuge said Ps3 sold 87 million, and I think the last documented number for 360 was 84.There isn't official numbers, until we have some you can't assure that.
Just a bit of caution "fellow" consumers, don't predict the PS4 leading the market at all.

Please note all these other examples where consoles did not reach 1 million sales within 24 hrs that irrefutably show selling 1 million is in 24hrs is nothing special.
For instance, in 2000, the PlayStation 2 sold about 500,000 units in its first 24 hours on its way to capturing a huge majority of the console market in the coming years. In 2001, Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox sold 500,000 and 550,000 units, respectively, in their first week on store shelves, but neither console maker was able to ride launch sales to PS2-level post-launch success.
The Xbox 360 sold through a healthy 326,000 units in the US in the two weeks following its launch, according to NPD. Sega's Dreamcast, on the other hand, sold a larger 372,000 units in just four days of US sales, Sega said (in what was arguably a smaller market for video games at the time). Yet the Xbox 360 went on to be one of the most dominant consoles of its generation, while the Dreamcast languished on shelves and ceased production just over a year after launch.
Pro move nominating 360 as one of the most dominate consoles in a market including the DS and Wii.
I think i read that article too much.
Well, it IS getting linked and quoted in every single thread that has anything to do with console shipments.
I don't get why. It's not like that Kyle Orland is the first person on the internet to be wrong.

At what point did Wii sales start to fall off a cliff? If I was to take a random guess I'd say mid-2009 maybe? Either way I'd expect the PS4 to track higher at some point soon.

I kinda want a $500+ PS5 with great hardware but that will probably never happen anymore. I don't think there's a market for gaming consoles priced above $400.Ok Sony, dont get complacent. You learned from last gen...dont make the same mistake as last gen with the PS5.
No.
Beginning of 2011 was when it became apparent Wii was falling off. 2010 was a regular decline, but 2011 was far steeper.
Also how do we not have a New Zealand-based GIF yet? That post & thread were legendary.
I want to see an accelerating zoom-out from a stack of PS4s, gradually revealing that both landmasses of New Zealand are entirely formed from huge unwanted piles of PS4s.
Yep, they are absolutely outstanding phones. Ive been rocking a Z1 for about 2 years now and its just bullet proof. Very good phones. Not sure why they never took off tbh.
I dont have much to add.... amazing numbers for PS4. I knew PS4 was going to do ok but not this much.

My guess is that there are pc gamers that believe consoles are holding back game developers

No, but Orland continued to write biased articles about console sales, always downplaying PS4 sales (low end of the spectrum) while displaying positive bias towards Xbox sales (high end of the spectrum).

Yup, after the 3rd time, it's plenty laughable how obvious his bias is. He scaled down a lot in the recent ones, but what can you do when proof is in the pudding.
Yeah his "we can't know the future Xbox+ PS4-" is a bit tiresome in it constant application.
Is the PS4 due for a price drop in the West? Maybe not
Japanese price cut doesn't necessarily herald worldwide reduction.

Did...did he really link to an article about YouPorn statistics as evidence that the Xbox One was close to PS4 sales in NA?
NPD is pretty close, but come on, using YouPorn statistics as an indicator?
There isn't official numbers, until we have some you can't assure that.
Any idea on how many PlayStation Plus members there are?
Funny how the PS4 is lagging behind the Wii but still ahead of the PS2. At some point in the future, the reverse will be true.
