Ooh thanks. Guess I'll grab 1+2 for GBC and start from there.

But yeah, how are Monsters 1 and 2 as well? Are they worth playing?

Monsters 1&2 are still very playable if you are a fan of old school pokemon. Just got done with a playthrough of 2,it is I think fantastic gbc game

Dragon Quest Monsters 1 + 2 (as well as Caravan Heart) are Monster catching games with a great breeding mechanic (Slime + Golem = Rockslime, with the skills of both parents + Rockslime's skills; this is cumulative) as well as a randomized roguelike dungeon mechanic. DQM1 every dungeon is randomized, DQM2 has this extremely extensive randomized world + 2-10 dungeon side mechanic.

They're probably my favorite games of all time, definitely my favorites of that era.

... So ... yes?

This is not what you probably think it is. Those binders don't contain typed script in 12 point font or anything like that. It contains hand drawn maps and hand-written dialog with only a handful of dialog boxes per page.

An example of the one from DQ6:

That's really cool.

I had no idea VII remake has non-random battles as well, that's fantastic.

I've only in the last couple of years learned to love JRPGs, but random encounters is the one thing I simply can't deal with anymore (outside of Etrian where it's firmly rooted in the mechanics).

I'm replaying IV DS right now and the encounter rate is turning me off a lot. It's just a bit too frequent. At least the battles are super quick!

By the way, I just wanted to mention how much I love the animated sprites in the DS remakes, some of the best I've seen ever, in all genres. I also love the rotateable environments across two screens, that just never gets old for me. IX looked atrocious by comparison, even if I liked it as a game.
I actually dislike the symbol encounters.

I'm hoping they bring the mobile port over too, as it's the 3DS version with random encounters.

I haven't played a DQ game since Dragon Warrior NES, which should I choose from 4-8 if I can only pick one?

IMHO? DQ8.
To me it was the first DQ game I played and it got me interested in playing the older DQ games, but all should be played if you have interest in the series.
Besides since BOTH DQ7 and 8 are releasing you should get both in this case, especially when DQ games don't do well all the time outside Japan.

In 2018 or 2019 perhaps.

We need OT subtitles; anyone got any ideas?

Dragon Quest VII |OT| It's been 3000 years...

Dragon Quest VII or VIII |OT| The Heroes We Deserve

Dragon Quest VIII |OT| Playable in 2 DD's mode

Just noticed that Nintendo of America used the original Japanese Dragon Quest wordmark instead with the sword through the T for VII in the Direct, but not for VIII. Just an oversight I guess.

So any way we can convince Squeenix to release 1+2 GB and 3 GBC on the virtual console before these come out? Or release ANY games on the VC at all ever?

They'll just redirect all inquiries and petitions to their storefront on iTunes and Google Play. Hope you like extra-fancy dialects.

So if I'm going to jump into this series for the first time with one of these two I should go with 8?

If I enjoy it I would check out 7, but from reading this thread it seems like 8 is the better game.
While I still think it's a good game, I can't help but think 8 gained a disproportionate amount of appreciation due to it being many people's first DQ game, and it being the entry with fancy production values. I think 7 is the better and meatier game of the two, though I haven't played the 3DS remake, and my tastes are just as subjective as the rest's. There will probably be quite some time between releases, so if you can, you may as well check out both.

I'm partial to 5, 6 and 7. If I had to pick though, 5 is probably my favourite. I should note though that you might want to avoid the original SFC version. It's not bad, but it's definitely one that can be rough if you haven't played an RPG of that era in a while. There are remakes on the DS and PS2, and both are excellent. I haven't tried the mobile port, but it seemed completely fine too.

4 or 8 are your best choices. Four has a very interesting story structure, especially for its era. Just play one of the versions with party chat. 8 is the most modern in terms of presentation and it's systems are really good and well-refined. The other three aren't bad but they can range from really long ( probably a minimum of 90+ hours for VII on your first play through) or just not as interesting story-wise if you've played a lot of jrpgs IMO. After those two I'd say play V and then VII in that order.

However, if you are really into job systems them VII might be the one you want to play. Out of those titles it has the best one.

Regarding the release date, I think I read something about early summer 2016 for 7 but cannot find the source...Is it an educated guess ? Any news about this ?

Dragon Quest VIII is an enhanced version with the same dialogue script as its original release (unlike DQ7 which is reworked more extensively) and already has English voice acting recorded, so it's extraordinarily unlikely that Nintendo would retranslate it from scratch.

Well, people were surprised to know that both NoE and NoA are translating games, giving 2 English translations.
Plus, this time they'll have to translate it to multi 5 themselves since it was English only on PS1.

NA Direct announced Dragon Quest VII early summer 2016, Dragon Quest VIII in 2016
EU Direct announced Dragon Quest VII and VIII both in 2016.

Similarly, the NA Direct announced Bravely Second for Spring 2016 while the EU Direct was a bit more specific with Q1 2016.

If some of you guys want to play DQ 1 + 2 Monsters, petition Operation Hero to ask SE to bring the 3DS remakes out West. Also if we buy more copies of DQVII and VIII 3DS, when it gets released, SE might consider it. Definitely want the Monsters 3DS remakes out West too.

You're thinking of the wrong game. VIII is for PS2 and had a very good localization which even included extra stuff the Japanese version didn't have, like voice acting. He's saying VIII won't be started from scratch. It's already multi-5 for Europe too.

As for VII, it will probably share the same outsourced English translation.

Depends on how you want to play. If you want to play on a DS, go with 5. If you want to play on a home console and have a ps2, go with 8. I really can't choose between them.

For what it's worth (and I realize it's not the same and won't work for everyone), the games aren't too (important) text/plot heavy, so I'd imagine they'd be doable enough for English speakers (well, I only played the first one so far, haven't gotten to the second yet). Wouldn't swear that there may be SOME point where you'd get a little confused (since I do speak/read Japanese myself), but I'd imagine they should certainly be playable as it's pretty straightforward, plus the plot's pretty minimal.

Haven't there been rumblings that DQ7 is 8-4's secret project? They already have experience with the series and both Nintendo and Squenix have used them extensively on other projects.

If people buy these games we might get the new Joker game coming out. I want that, so empty your pockets

Good luck with that. DQVII would have been in a good spot being released almost any time this year. Instead they're releasing it the same year as a billion other JRPGs.

The timing will really do DQVIII a disservice.

Who's going to be running out to get that game at launch after a hundred hours of DQVII? Even I'll probably need a break and see how the price drops.

But hey, they aren't going to be big sellers no matter when and how they are released.

Why do people always omit Dragon Quest IX from game recommendations? Am I the only person who loved that game? ;_;

It was good... but was a departure from 8 which really made some waves here. Even though I liked it, it's still a low point of the series for me.

Regardless, 9 sold really well so it seems more people liked it than not.

I enjoyed IX....probably the most time I spent playing a DQ game. It came out in '09 but I didn't stop playing it until summer last year....just because I'm a completionist and need to do everything. It wasn't my favorite game in the series, that was VIII, but it's up there.

I thought that IX was harmed by the end of Nintendo Wifi Connection. Is it still worth playing?

The only thing you miss are the downloadable quests, but if you have an Action Replay you can just unlock them that way. So you're not actually missing anything.

I really enjoy 9. I go back to it for 5-10 hours every 4-5 months or so.

If you have an Action Replay type device and are willing to copy some sav files with dungeons, sure.

Needs a more evergreen update for mobile/portable.

Also the daily/weekly DLC shops, but with a certain Windows save hack tool you can just hack any item at any price into the shop at any price.

For reference, the entire shop list by week:

I don't think it prevents you from playing the game all the way through. You'll miss out on extra some extra content and items but its still worth playing.
