Would be pretty hilarious if even a year later Tomb Raider performs better at launch on the PS4 than it did on Xbone
Why would that be hilarious? Because you prefer Sony to Xbox??

It's pretty obvious it will perform better when the market it will be launching on is so much bigger...

Someone from Sony mentioned passingly that very thing for the PS4.

Its possible that would get pretty confusing for the consumer though, and would be just yet another version of a game that devs would have to make. Not sure if it would really work / go over well tbh
Not sure why that would be confusing. It'd just be one more model. There'd be full compatibility for the platform family. With the higher spec'd console getting better visuals and/or frame rate. In fact most electronics come in a family of offerings. Consoles are rather unique in that they traditionally only offer one per generation of hardware.

Game developers already code for the PC which has a wide variety of component combinations. Coding for one extra spec on the console side would be nothing compared to that.

So the PS4 price drop did some numbers, jeez. Remember when so many people were worried about the October numbers? :D

Question...

Do consoles sold as "free" with another item get counted as sold via NPD?

I'm not sure if any other retailer was doing this, but Best Buy had at least 3 or 4 different "Buy this TV Black Friday weekend, get an Xbox One with purchase". There were a couple of Doorbuster deals that had the price of the TV inflated by $100 as part of the bundle deal, but certain non-advertised Samsung TVs came with a free XB1 in-store, and there were plenty to go around.

Conversely, two weeks before Black Friday, all Sony 4K TVs at Best Buy came with a similar deal (buy this 4K TV at sale price, get a PS4 for $100 more).

I'm guessing the answer is yes since the console SKUs are rung up at the register, but I'm unsure. Thanks!

I don't give a shit if it's your favorite game of all time, honestly, because my comment wasn't even about quality.

It's an abhorrent TOMB RAIDER game that destroyed a true original for checklist game design nonsense that I could play in thirty five other games every year.

They could have called it RETURN OF THE LADY WARRIOR and gave it no relation to Tomb Raider and no one would have gave a shit. They made their bed, now as an OG TR fan I have a right to dance in the fuckin' rain over seeing it crash and burn. As it is my only shot at ever seeing a return to the glory days of what the franchise was always about. This shouldn't bother you one bit.

Preach on. This is the best news for people who really want a true 3D puzzle platformer honest to goodness proper tomb raider game.

Something to think about: last year when PS4 sold 800K in the U.S for November it sold 4.1 million world wide through the holiday season,

We know that PS4 is already over 30 million sold & chances are it's going to sell well over 4 million this holiday season, I'm thinking somewhere around 6 or 7 million pushing PS4 to about 37 million sold at the end of the year.

uh, what?

that 4.1m was Black Friday week+December, so US made up like 1.5m or so sales (400k-ish GTAV+TLOU bundles, 1100k December, maybe even more actually cause those bundles probably weren't the only things being sold that week)

edit: oh wait you're not actually implying the US ratio is that low, yeah it's probably going to do about that much

Inefficiency in going out of one's way to spend mind and time on something they dislike.

The mind boggles.

So, have you bought The Vanishing of Ethan Carter for the PS4 after the 30fps lock patch was released, or was the variable framerate dilemma just something to complain about with the screenshot thread darling that wasn't on XBO?

Microsoft is never really sure if it wants to stick around for next gen.

Wouldn't be surprised if they bail out tbh. The brand is not very strong and they're just seem to get weaker and weaker as time goes on.

Unless the price is like $40, has some dlc, and releases before the holidays, I'd be surprised if the PS4 version even charts next year. I'm guessing the PC version will probably do best out of three versions.

But yea, 2016 just seems to be a stacked next year for PS4, and it could potentially be the biggest holiday season of titles this gen, particularly guessing the release of Destiny 2, TitanFall 2, & Final Fantasy XV.
TR hype just seems to have dwindled down so I'm not sure if it would have much or even any fanfare by the time it releases on PS4. Just a bad situation overall, for a good game.

1) 2,040,000 (WII; 2008)
2) 1,700,000 (DS; 2009)
3) 1,700,000 (360; 2011)
4) 1,570,000 (DS; 2008)
5) 1,540,000 (DS; 2007)
6) 1,539,000 (PS4; 2015)
7) 1,500,000 (DS; 2010)
8) 1,370,000 (360; 2010)
9) 1,323,000 (GBA; 2003)
10) 1,318,000 (PS2; 2002)
11) 1,296,000 (XB1; 21015)

15) 1,260,000 (360; 2012)
16) 1,230,000 ( XB1; 2014)
So PS 4 still can't beat the best of xb 360. Will it ever manage to do that? It had two of the best bundle this November.

I don't think its crazy Xbone gets some traction in mainline Europe as a nice 2nd console for some exclusive titles as time goes buy. PS4 is the clear dominant leader there and I don't think that will ever change but I could see a nice little uptick for the Bone as price comes down and more exclusives over time hit.

Problem with that is to get a 2nd console this generation means getting another paid subscription, either PSN+ or Live Gold. You could do without but that'll reduce the number of playable games for the system which kind of defeats the reason for getting it.

There is also a ton of games coming out next year. Unless there is a must have new release coming out on the console you don't own, you don't have to buy an additional console to fill your playtime up with great games for most gamers.

One final thing specific to the PS4 is that PSVR is coming out next year. That'll be like a new console release all to itself with plenty of console exclusive games to it. I've been tempted with the great deals for the XB1, but my personal calculation is that I'd rather spend money on PSVR which will give me an entirely new gaming experience than pick up an XB1 + Gold to play the few games, like Halo Wars 2, that I really want to play.

You probably won't get that either.

I'll take jack shit over what we did get. I got up to finding the boat in the 2013 Tomb Raider before losing the will to continue. Right after that junkyard city part with the cable cars where it became clear the game was degenerating into a third person shooter was where the bitterness kicked in.

Obviously the PS4 couldn't beat the 360 because Sony was being complacent, unlike the good guy Microsoft. Unfortunately, Sony doesn't have an infinite war chest.

The Xbox One is significantly outpacing the 360, going by those numbers. I really don't get all the concern around it. It's doing really well; it's just not the market leader, and I doubt that's going to change. Doesn't mean it's not a healthy product though, because it definitely is.
This is pretty great news to me. It's outpacing the 360 which was the market leader last generation. Both ps4 and xo are doing supremely well.

i believe so, especially in the united states. however, the 360, like the ds, was a platform that was not initially as successful as it wound up being. it shipped 40 million units in its first five years on the market, and more than doubled that in its final five years on the market.

Oh ok, interesting, thanks.

LoL Noobie still fighting the good fight...

How much was the 360 in 2011? 6 years into its release? Common bud, must try harder.

Hey guys, just woke up and couldn't find the info. Do we know the sales of TR? Or at least how it ranked? I remember it was hinted that it was not in the Top 20, or was it misinterpreted?

Aww, you missed the best part of the game. Everything after that is awesome.

Preach on. This is the best news for people who really want a true 3D puzzle platformer honest to goodness proper tomb raider game.

You realize that Tomb Raider needed a reboot in the first place because the old formula wasn't working. If it's not dead yet, one sure way to kill the franchise would be to try to make it a pure 3D puzzle platformer. If anything, RotTR bombing means that it needs to go even further in widening its audience.

Personally speaking, I bought, played, and enjoyed the reboot, but was/am put off by the emphasis RotTR placed on going back to the old formula. I have no idea what the gameplay is really like, which is due to the muddled marketing the game had. Between that and the XB1 exclusivity, SE has turn me from someone who had Tomb Raider on my 'To Buy' list to someone not caring about their game at all.

Amazing US numbers for PS4. I thought Xb1 would win the holiday season with all the first party exclusives, but price and 3 party deals matter more it seems. Poor Tomb Raider.

Where is NPD George?

Yes, if the game isn't part of an official bundle. If say Microsoft offered a free game of your choice, there is a high chance that everyone would pick COD as their free game, which would shift the rankings. That would count but the official PS4 bundle would not count in the rankings.

The George you know is gone. Go back a few pages and i'm sure you can find a person of interest.

Here's why Xbox One beating Xbox 360 early isn't quite cutting it:

360 sales by year
2005: uh idk I actually can't find this, it's not that big though
2006: 3.9m
2007: 4.6m
2008: 4.7m
2009: 4.8m
2010: 6.8m
2011: 7.3m
2012: 5.3m

2013: 3.1m
2014: 1.3m

for that matter, 360's 11th November (72k) is fairly close to PS2's 11th November (80k)

"No," Spencer says, "I fully expect that you’ll see another console from us […] Our best customers are Xbox console customers, and I want to keep those people engaged both on the Xbox One and anything we might do in the future. I’m 100 percent committed to that."

http://www.theverge.com/2015/12/10/...16-interview-crackdown-3-quantum-break-recore

next platform and the direction for it is probably being discussed right now. i think microsoft would be happy to leave this generation as soon as possible and hit the ol' redo button earlier than last time. 2018 doesn't seem too far-fetched, and might even get ahead of sony.

PS4 pulling another 243,000 ahead in install base numbers with Xbone is massive.

December will increase the gap too but I have no idea if it will be by a similar amount or not!

Doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me if the head of the division can't commit but only says he expects things tbh. It's probably the strongest claim he can conceivably make given that there are a number of management layers still above him, but still.

The strong sales of Xb1 should give everyone a bit more confidence (assuming they're not making a loss per sale, which in total, considering all the updates, they quite possibly might).

honestly while sales for both platforms are good (well for ps4, great), this talk about the gap doesn't matter. the game is played worldwide and sony trounced the competition this generation. i wouldn't be surprised if they stay 2:1 with the xbox one until the end of the generation. i can certainly see the ps4 selling a lot longer than the xb1 after the platform's been replaced in 2019 too.
