Emily Rogers: Nintendo Working on Unannounced Wii U Game [Update: Paper Mario]

However we may disagree about the gameplay quality of that game, I'm glad you're able to enjoy the OST at least. It really is woefully under-appreciated.

Sticker Star has the best ost of any mario rpg imo. And one of the best I've heard in recent years.

But if somone doesn't like a big-band jazzy style, they might hate it's OST. So it's one of those things.

I'm not sure where this came from. I don't think they have a second project that's far along.

Wii U is a failure and NX will need every bit of first-party support it can possibly get to even have a chance of success in the current market. Seems like a pretty clear case of misplaced priorities, even if it makes current Wii U owners happy.

But that's about all I have to say about that. Nintendo gonna Nintendo.

I don't get this reasoning. What is stopping them from porting over a better version for the NX?

I expect most if not all first party Wii U games will end up on the NX at some point in its life. Especially if the NX ends up more popular than the Wii U.

We are getting a direct next month on that date the bolded gets released; a smart way to end or open the direct and something to hype up Wii U/3DS owners with :).

Smash Bros. is definitely the main reason why I think there'll be a direct IMO. It'd be very unlike them to just drop the final DLC's release information out of nowhere instead of drumming up maximum possible excitement. And it'd be a great chance to market Fates and Bayonetta 2's reissue as well. No way for them to lose.

The rest is just icing.

Also, Feb's when they have that investor meeting, right? And March is Miitomo? There will definitely be something around that time.

I feel like they'll just drop the release dates for Corrin & Bayonetta on the Smash website.

Hmm. Unfortunately, after the last couple of Paper Mario games, I can't be that excited for this. Paper Mario and TTYD were a LONG time ago...

Here's hoping.

I remember when Intelligent System games announcement were welcome with pure hype, and now it seems most people are scared.
Fun times.

In the past few days we got:
- a bunch of TP HD news
- release dates and new fighters for Pokken Tournament
- an entire Mario vs Donkey Kong eShop game
- release date and CE for Bravely Second
- release timing for Dragon Quest VII
- new Animal Crossing amiibos

...yeah, definitely no chance of a January direct at this point. Maybe February though. They need to promote FE Fates, Smash Bros DLC, M&S Olympics (3DS), Pokken, Bayo2's reissue, Bravely Second (in Europe), and TP HD among other things before they launch.

Haha yeah I forgot about a lot of that stuff. If it were just dates for announced games that'd be one thing but they've put out plenty of Direct worthy information already this month.

Im not excited until I see what this game looks like. Paper Mario has been mediocre following TTYD which was two generations ago.

If they effort they are putting in is as much as Mario Tennis and Animal Crossing then just cancel it and put the resources somewhere else.

Gimme Super Paper Mario 2.

Fuck the haters.

'twas a good game. I'd be okay with a sequel and would play it.

I enjoyed Super Paper Mario, but never beat it. I got to a point where I needed to remember a super long sequence of block hits and stopped. I meant to go back, with a pad and paper, but haven't.

But what will it accomplish to not go crazy at the end? In the end, Paper Mario is either going to sell on the Wii U or not, and it won't be changed if they play to the masses.

It will accomplish not losing money on a high risk, low reward project at the end of the wii u's life.

it's still a business.

edit:
Paper Mario isn't even a "sure thing" at this point. As in, they have a lot of goodwill they need to restore with this title. Especially if WOM affected Sticker Star sales a lot.

Oh god, it will really be Amiibo-centric, won't it?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I never even considered Amiibos... this is terrible.

Hope Intelligent Systems go big with this new Paper Mario since it's the first one on consoles since Super paper mario on Wii almost ten years ago and make a memorable game. It's time. Now the real question will be: When it will be oficially revealed to see actual footage? I'm sure at least it will look awesome and sharp. The characters could finally look like they are actually made of paper.

That's probably because of the stupid limitations that Nintendo, as a publisher, put on Sticker Star and Paper Jam. If this new game is anything like those two, I'd prefer to see it silently cancelled, even though the original Paper Mario and TTYD are part of my top 5 favorite GOAT.

I expect it to be revealed in a Direct in 2-3 weeks.

Basically to make a game in such a way that isn't trying for mass appeal but instead works to appeal to the core fanbase.

I feel like the core fanbase is going to be there anyway. We're talking in hypotheticals so it's hard to argue either way.

Well, that's what they get.

Hmm...

It's easy to see how feedback from Super Paper Mario lead to Sticker Star. I wonder if feedback from Sticker Star will lead back a TTYD-esque game?

Codename STEAM is so close to a great game

Every time I'm not playing it, I keep thinking "Man, I really want to be playing CNS."

Then I play it and I'm bored and I cannot figure out why this happens.

Multiplatform for this and Zelda U would be a reasonable compromise, sure. We'll see if it happens.

Anyone who is going to buy a Paper Mario game is going to buy it if it takes risks. Splatoon was a risk, and 1/5 of Wii U owners own it.

Yeah, I already mentioned splatoon.

It had a huge (compared to other wii u games ) marketing budget.

Why would they release a new game in 2016 for Wii U with a marketing budget on MK8's level, when they maybe have a new handheld or console coming months later. They'll save their marketing budget to have a good launch. Since they're usually convservative.

Splatoon is a risk, because it's a new IP ?

Splatoon was the result of looking at which genres are currently popular / unrepresented on Nintendo platforms. Having "online TPS" as the starting point, then Nintendofying it (mascot characters, paint instead of bullets so it's kid-friendly, colorful, accessible), come up with a gameplay twist (like how Smash and Kart are not traditional fighting/racing games; the 'main goal' of Splatoon is not fraging) and finally a big marketing push.

It was a calculated risk at best, not like how Nintendogs and Wii Fit are risks.
