Fine Bros. pulling the whole "We pay you in EXPOSURE" or whatever with that animator. Fuck that noise.

Everyone who had even the most marginal contact with the creative industry knows that "exposure" doesn't pay the bills.

I mean, I could tell my landlord that while I sadly can't pay my rent right now, I'm going to make up for it by telling all my friends how great the house I'm living in is. I'll even post that on Facebook. It's free advertisement!

It isn't the video that's the problem. It's the fact that the Fine Bros tried to make money off of people misfortune that is the problem.

Maybe I will sound crazy - but how would they prevent monetization of that video?

They have a popular channel with millions of subscribers. A horrible tragedy occurred in the USA (Newtown shooting). And they got some of their kids together to show heartfelt reactions to said tragedy.

Then they upload that video onto their channel. Were they expected to disable ads on that video? Is it even possible for Fine Bros to disable ads and prevent one particular video from being monetized?

No you don't have to monetize every video. Anyways, I would think an expected trade-off would be something like donating to a cause using the money that one video made.

When you upload a video you are given the option of disabling monetizing specific videos, so yes they could have easily turned it off and made up the loss with their other non-educational videos.

But they didn't and instead chose make money on people reacting to a tragedy, which speaks volume about their characters.

Monetization is per video, not channel.

Also, if they wanted to show respect they would have altered their "format" and created a discussion around it. They should have taken the proceeds from monetizarion to charity.

In short: they did nothing right.

So does every news organization on the planet. I don't see people demanding CNN to report school shootings not-for-profit.

It's literally a checkbox for every individual video

You can stop any video on your channel at any time from enabling/disabling ads [unless the vid gets 3rd party content ID that forces ads and funnels all the money to someone else].

In general, proper form / etiquette on YouTube is to disable monetization for such a video. Otherwise it really does sound like you are trying to profit from a tragic event. And for what it's worth, I do believe the 24 hour news stations similarly feed off of tragic events to game viewership, although they have a more justifiable rationale: that they are news organizations (which the fine brothers channel is not.)

They have specific contracts etc. in place. They are going to need to be hit a lot harder before there is any real impact.

A lot of those contracts are probably dependent on how many subs they hold at one time, else they could just dick off and do whatever until the contract ends. And it wouldn't make much sense for a company to sign off on something like this without a stipulation in place.

There's a reason Youtubers are all about subs. There's a reason they keep upping their previous videos in hopes of more followers joining, or keeping away from decline. It's a heavy burden, and one big fuck up could ruin your channel.

Plus, those subscribers were fans until they pulled this shit. And worse off, people who didn't even know those idiots sure do now, and probably won't subscribe. Couple that with a bunch of popular youtubers weighing in on the issue shitting all over them, they don't have a chance in hell at retaining or bolstering their brand.

Jaltoid just released this video about how the FineBros wanted to hire very well known animators on Youtube with paying nil-to-very little and copy-pasted the emails. Also tip about "promotion isn't payment".

Phillip Defranco responded to this scandal.
He's appeared in their series before, just a heads up.
I think he has a pretty objective view on the whole issue.

Compiling new videos from today/yesterday. Onto a newer page, for folks catching up.(Like me!)

People on Twitter said that Twitter is censoring #unsubfinebros ? I don't use Twitter so I wonder if censorship like this would affect future negative news by not showing what is "truly" trending and slowing down the spreading of it?

It might not be trending high but its certainly not censored when you look for it and there are no reports of this happening.

if they keep losing an average of 100 people
per minute they will have lost a million subscribers five days from now

i hope the backlash can be sustained for that long, because that will genuinely be remarkable to see
