GameTrailers to close after 13 years

It's interesting to note that Kyle Bosman probably has the best dry humor and most talent out many of these gaming personalities. And consequently, the kindafunny guys....aren't really all that funny to begin with. In fact, nothing they do is humor related. Whereas that's Kyle's entire thing. Which is what he was pointing out saying those guys aren't really funny...at all. And I agree.

They aren't even Kinda Funny...get it? Kinda Funny. Get it?

In all seriousness I never did get the Kinda Funny moniker. I've been listening to these guys for years and never did I think "Colin and Greg are funny"

I listen to them because they are THE PlayStation guys and had lots of insight into all things PS, Colin especially.

I love this!

Just a quick note, luchadork: I was trying to use the site with Firefox 44.02 and can't get the Twitter display to work. This isn't an issue with Google Chrome 48.0.2564.116 m. Don't think it's something that you can fix but if there's any chance you can twiddle with it to make it work, this is officially my go-to site to follow the crew!

hey man, thanks for the feedback. really appreciate the heads up. sorry its not working 100% for you.

so... i cant replicate this on my computer. i'm using a fresh install of firefox on osx/win7. and it seems to be working ok. do you have any plugins that might be affecting it? the twitter feeds are just straight embeds from twitter. so i'd assume they know what they are doing. do the other feeds load? i know i had to do some javascript fudgery to get the initial one to display within tabs and slick slideshow. but the other individual feeds were working. also, does the youtube tab work?

Legit question. Why are they called Kinda Funny? I've been listening to their podcasts for a couple months... it's fairly serious most of the time.

Kinda Funny existed before they left IGN for non gaming related comedy videos and podcasts. Then when the Patreon was bringing in enough, they decided "hey, we could live on this if the reaction to doing games was good enough" so it was a subbrand of what they were already doing.

Hey dude, I made this site for myself so I could keep track of what everyone was up to easily. I hope its alright that I post it here. http://www.uneasy-alliance.com/

Its got all the twitter feeds in a tab. All the playlists in a tab (including the videos that ceriden, gametrailers archive, gkettering/thedarknight have been saving to YT). Shows the latest stream from the post-GT era (massive shouts out to farisr for this). It shows an old video and stream based (roughly) on the old youtube/twitch schedule. Plus a random video/stream from the entire archives. And it'll show a message up the top if Huber or Brad or Damiani are live on twitch. I wanted a site where I could keep track of the guys. And also have a page/app thing where I could log on each day and there would be a "new" GT video for me to watch.

ceriden: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXsQDhVzkfRy-4pJbTkHGBw

Good, good!

This is sad news to me. The GT time podcast was the highlight of my Friday mornings and I loved their reviews. Hopefully they can continue to work together. All the people that were on GT time are easily my favorite personalities in gaming along with Jim Sterling.

You can now watch all your favorite GT shows with a fast and easy to use interface on GTsquad.com. Just hover over or tap the menu item called "Shows" and select the GT original you want to view.

Honestly, I know their closure is still kinda "fresh", but I wonder if they really are planning something or not. Wish they would give us an update, like "yeah guys, we got something" or just flat out and say "we are going our separate ways".

They are trying to work something out but also keeping their eyes open for other jobs.

You can't rush these things.
I worry they missed their chance though when all eyes were on them a few weeks back.

I never said they have to have their complete plan right now and present it to everyone right now.

I'm just curious if they are going to go that route, or if they have decided to split up.

They should know at least that much by now. I mean, its been a month that they have been out of a job.

I'm suffering Bosman withdrawal syndrome really badly, there's really no one like him in gaming media. I hope he can get a show going again.

Man, I really can't wait for them to announce whatever's next. My wallet is ready.

I think that interview with KF was the actual first time I hear a confirmation of Brandon about a next project

I eagerly await whatever they do, I'll be there supporting

Is it an upbeat and positive talk about the future? Every time this thread gets bumped I get a twinge of panic and foreboding.

imo, really positive. Specially hearing the way Brandon talks about the past with viacom.

as the way he seems to put it, all this GT closure comes after a series of hold backs from the parent companies, which were all pretty dumb. In a a future project they plan to get rid of all that stupid hold backs.

Watched all of it, and I would say so. Brandon seems confident that most everyone will be back to do something, and they seem to be leaning to some sort of subscription model to make that happen. At the very least they want to get to streaming and the regular shows (Final Bosman, Huber Hype, GT Time, Man Ups, and trailer reviews) back up and running as they don't require a lot of pre-production and editing.

Kinda Funny interview with Brandon Jones where he addresses the future of the GT boys.

Awesome. Will watch when I get home.

If they do go the sub route I hope enough people support them to keep them going. I know I'll be there no matter the sub price.

Yep I can't wait for what they have in store. I would be down for a sub model very much so.

He was careful not use the "P word" as he called it. So they may even do something like Giant Bomb. However, at one point he was talking theoretical stretch goals and that Retrospectives would be at an insanely high number followed by reviews, because he would want to do reviews all or nothing. Not sure I agree with the reviews part of it, because I think Giant Bomb proved you can be selective with reviews.

So optional pay wall for more content is a possibility? I'd still be down with that. I'm willing to throw whatever money at them I can, tbh.

Watching this interview with Kinda Funny, Brandon was absolutely right when he said Kyle really brought the personalities to the forefront. Let's all go back to very first Bosman episode. So good.

Yeah, even the console reveal Do's and Dont's were great. The name of the Final Bosman thread at first was "Likable GT guy gets his own show".

It's kind of amazing that most of the guys that were left at the end were never hired to be on camera, but it just worked.

I think he meant it in a way they can satisfactorily cover different games and not just a pair because of man-power.

if they plan on doing reviews, he need more dedication from the team, and well, money can grant that dedication.

I really hope they can accomplish the goal. I'm in a kind of drought of video coverage because I don't like most of the other outlets after watching GT for many years.

I really want them to announce the next thing like.. tomorrow :(

He and this video were the responsible for me coming back to watching GT content,

that video was my starting point in all these years of watching GT all weeks

I always think about how this made GT better. It made for a more modest and genuine group of guys to follow, which I have a hard time finding for games media.

Well he didn't say how content would be gated with a subscription or not. Many do it differently. Giant bomb has exclusive shows for subs, kinda funny gives first access, and others just offer more content with more money coming in and are transparent about how much is needed to justify what. He just made it clear they would need an insane amount of money to justify Restropectives and Reviews, and that the regular shows and streaming would be the easiest to get running.

Have we heard anything from Kyle lately? It seemed like he took it the hardest, but he was my favorite of them (I liked them all, though). I just want to see him doing another show like the final bosman again.

Well, whatever they decide to do, I'll be there. All muh monies thrown at their faces.

I agree with you that the all or nothing approach to reviews is odd. Selective works fine.

I gotta say, I'm not quite as optimistic as some of the other people here.

The effort - the desire - is there, certainly. But it didn't sound quite like Brandon knew how to make the math work, to the point that I thought the interview was a little awkward when the interviewer tried to talk specifics of what the business model might look like. Greg Miller than intervened a bit, stating that their own Kinda Funny business model took months of planning to get straight - whereas Brandon has been forced to figure it out on the fly.

We'll see where this leads. Maybe a loose-knit collection of Twitch streams and some weekly shows like Final Bosman, Huber Hype, GT Time, etc - supported by a subscription. The only thing that wouldn't exist in that form that I would really miss would be reviews - as reviews take a lot more effort to put together.

I'd be perfectly fine with the above and would gladly pay the subscription. If they had an annual option, I would go that route so the pain only hurt once a year - like my yearly flu shot.

....From the interview, it sounds like there's still a lot in the air, which is understandable.

I agree that Brandon doesn't seem clear what the answer is as of now, but I appreciate the caution he is exercising. It would have been easy to throw a bunch of darts at the wall and try to launch something asap, but the chances of that falling flat were high.

Well I also think that is part of the reason why they are going to start off with the shows and streaming that they know people want so they can get something out there and then go from there I think.

KF doesn't review games and give them scores. They do a 30 minute playthrough or part of their podcasts they just say whether they like a game or not but aren't full reviews. So it could take time to get to that point.
