Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

This is huge if Nintendo jumps in and reconfirms this and for example works with MS to have Minecraft folks play between Wii U, XBO, 360, and PC players. Actually it's almost likely as not to be forgetting, MS themselves officially publish the Wii U version in Japan, which is their only published non-XB game in their history since entering the market with the OG Xbox.

Yes, world peace!

I know Sony has allowed this with PC, but have they ever explicitly said they would allow it with other console networks, like Live?

Not trolling, I'm just wondering if this does genuinely open it up to have XBL vs PSN play. I mean great if so, really.

I want to know this as well.

You guys that are saying Sony has been all about this for years now, do you have any articles that shows such a statement from them?

Hehe ok. For your logic to apply competitors would have to be on semi-equal footing - where features of these sorts would be a significant selling point or differentiating factor that drives sales. Since this feature does not do that in any major way and since the competitors are distanced by fair measure...this basically does nothing. It's nice (future wise it has potential and it's good MS got the foot out the door first) and perhaps some games get to benefit from it down the line but, lets not overstate its relevance.

Why would any of the choices Sony is gonna do make them "lose" anything? Xbone getting cross-play would be a win for everyone and Sony won't lose anything. Sony had an advatage before? What kind of advantage?

I edited this into an earlier post, but let me put it here.

Sony have a platform advantage in terms of being the more popular platform, ergo "I'll buy it on PS4 because my friends are there" will happen more often than "I'll buy it on Xbox One because my friends are there".

Unifying the online play has an equal marketing advantage for Sony and Microsoft, but a greater platform disadvantage for Sony as they'll likely lose more "I'll get it on [Platform here] because my friends are there" than Microsoft will.

So, I need Windows 10 for that, right? But on the other hand, Rocket League doesn't need Windows 10 to work with PC-Xbox One. It's so god damn confusing message with all that W10 crap, Windows 10 Xbox Live, etc. I HATE such stupid worded PR releases.

Can someone point to an article where Sony shows they've always been open and supportive to Xbox cross play?

People have always said it here, but what's the source?

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
This sounds like big news but I'm not entirely sure how big it actually is?

Also makes me wonder if MS will and try and charge for such a thing on Windows 10 through Live. Like this is a "feature"?

this is HUGE but i think it will be a while before most games take advantage of this because of the complications. in order for xbl/psn/pc players to play together ea for example will have to ensure updates are released simultaneously across all 3 platforms but as far as i know know updates have to be independently approved by ms/sony.

larger pool of players is good but do i really want to be playing against mouse/keyboard players when im using the controller? nope

Great news. Some games that have small populationson multiple platforms after a while could unite all players and make it a bigger population again.

Hope devs pick that up.

This is for Steamworks, PSN and whatever Nintendo uses.

How great would it be if Microsoft and Sony opened up their networks to support cross game chat parties.

Cross play is great, but it is seriously dampened if you can't communicate over it.

Before you had to use W10 and sell through the Windows 10 store for crossplay. Now you can crossplay with anything you feel like. Windows XP, Mac, PSN, Wii U, nGage

I was aware of that in the first place. My oriignal point was about RL crossplay between the three platforms. I'm right in thinking it's now up to Sony to allow that now (for RL), aren't I?
Sony aready allow it.

MS was the only closing the cross-play thing.

What? Looks like they are expanding the brand. Consoles is part of the equation.
MS is just showing consoles won't be anymore for them... they are migrating.

I will be amazed surprised if they launch a Xbone 2 some day.

Dangerous amount of "Your Turn Sony" and "Leave Sony Alone Posts"

Sony were initially open to this, however its also true that this now requires correspondence from Sony. Its likely they will say yes.

All these "your move Sony" posts.

Errrm hasn't cross play between PS4 and PC been standard since day 1?
FF XIV and Rocket League already do this.

I could see it going the other way because they know nobody is going to pay on pc. I think they'll drop mp from gold and turn it into a free games and deals thing.

Fuuuck nooooo. One of the major Xbox flaws to bash MS is gone now. *crying-in-my-consolewarrior-pillow*

But good for everyone else I guess ;P

Wait, do you think the "I'll buy it on PS4 because my friends are there" mindset is about cross-plattform play?

The fact they are supporting Monogame is also big now. Axiom Verge, and hopefully Salt and Sanctuary, and Transistor?

Axiom Verge was confirmed today will release on Xbone and Wii U later this year. :)

It wasn't just MS. Show me the Nintendo-Sony cross network games besides small titles here and there.

lol show me some cross platform games but don't because those don't count?

Right now the only game confirmed for Microsoft is that silly rocket car indie game.

Don't be silly

Such a statement would have been a non starter, given MS' stance so far.

I would be surprised if we didn't see an update confirming PS open network policy at some point this week with GDC going on, and re-stating they were first to implement this for PR purposes of course ;)

FF XIV and Rocket League already do this.

As does Street Fighter V and I think (IIRC) games like DC Universe Online supported it as well (which were Sony studios back then)

Steam can be played on Windows 7, so no.

I mean it certainly includes Windows 10 I'm sure.

Needs to be quoted as much as possible:

The Pure Chess folks basically confirmed that Nintendo has been perfectly cool with Wii U owners playing against other consoles, but it was Sony and until now MS who wouldn't play along.

This is huge if Nintendo jumps in and reconfirms this and for example works with MS to have Minecraft folks play between Wii U, XBO, 360, and PC players. Yea...the next few home console launches really will be interesting. Seriously.

Today marks the day that MS invented Cross-network play. Let it be known.
All hail our glorious leader.

Unf! That's awesome!

I was really hoping MS would just go on ahead with this anyway after hearing they had some policy against cross network stuff some time ago. Now, all is well.

Can someone explain this? If it's too much perhaps a link? Thanks

FFXIV is crossplay between PS3 + PS4 + PC. It would have been on 360 + XB1 if MS allowed crossplay. The developers said that they were waiting for MS to allow it and that they would not make an isolated version of the game for Xbox. I think they will now port it to Xbone.

Wow! I am so confused by MS right now. Lol. One moment they appear to be building a walled garden the next they are building bridges to other communities.

if they can't tempt you into their walled garden, the next best thing is to build a bridge to you,. Then build the wall behind you when you aren't looking :p

There's not much reason to believe they won't. Sony was fine with Final Fantasy XI and XIV being cross-play with Xbox, so this most likely isn't too much to ask, either.

Yep...the only major game i could see supporting this is battlefield...but right now on ps4 they don't allow play to pc

But perhaps that is due to controller vs kb/m issues

Yeah deflated on this whole thing...would rather they would leave it as is
I think you missed it, you can totally play against people who are on PC on PS4, but you can't join a party with them.

They're saying that because they read the blog post. It ends with an invitation to basically Sony to agree to it as well. So the come on Sony posts are about Sony also agreeing to full cross play, as currently the reality is for PC to be the neutral ground between them in Rocket League.
Wrong thread? We are talking about XBL opening up for cross network play
