Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

I edited this into an earlier post, but let me put it here.

Sony have a platform advantage in terms of being the more popular platform, ergo "I'll buy it on PS4 because my friends are there" will happen more often than "I'll buy it on Xbox One because my friends are there".

Unifying the online play has an equal marketing advantage for Sony and Microsoft, but a greater platform disadvantage for Sony as they'll likely lose more "I'll get it on [Platform here] because my friends are there" than Microsoft will.

This is my thought as well.

Sony can easily boast about the bigger online community. Friends can get the PS4 because of other friends. I think sales/community is a good motivation for consumers to buy one console over the other.

It seems like it would benefit MS more, but I really hope this can happen and take off. I really hope cross platform play for the biggest games becomes a reality.

But who is hurting more for this? It's not Sony. It's MS, where some of their markets really need the MP boost.

I think you missed it, you can totally play against people who are on PC on PS4, but you can't join a party with them.

No i read it :)

I mean since actually partying up with other platforms requires a huge lift from the dev doing the work themselves...the only game i can see doing this is battlefield since they already did the battlelog work

Microsoft is the one who will win on this matter while Sony will lose a vital reason for people to buy its consoles if they agree on this.

I'm not saying that I'm against it. Of course it will be wonderful news for everyone but let's not forget that in this generation Sony is the one selling way more consoles than Microsoft, therefore, the majority of future customers will probably choose the PS4 over the Xbox One because their friends will already have PS4s so they will probably want to play with them and that will increase the rate by which Sony dominates this generation of consoles.

If Sony agrees to Xbox-PSN cross network services, they will lose that and to be realistic, from a business standpoint, there is no reason whatsoever for them to allow that to happen. They may still do it to make people happy and build up even more goodwill but their financials will definitely take a hit from it if they decide to go for it.

TL;DR: I'm not sure if Sony will open the doors of PSN, at least not in the short term.

Wrong thread? We are talking about XBL opening up for cross network play

ps3ud0 8)

Again, read the actual text. MS is allowing it and CALLING FOR SONY TO AGREE to playing with Live. That's what the Sony posts are about, because right now, it's only going to be PC/ Xbox and PC/ Sony until Sony agree to it.

They are allowing the option, but Sony has to agree first.

As does Street Fighter V and I think (IIRC) games like DC Universe Online supported it as well (which were Sony studios back then)

Exactly, forgot those titles too.

I guess people are just hungry for Sony PR right now to say "yeah you can play against XB1 guys".

They probably don't mind if the technical implementation isn't crazy hard.

This could be amazing. Play where you want with whomever you want. I hope this works out the way we all hope it does.

Honestly not how i expected the the thread to go. The quick move the console warrior mindset some have really sucks. Its well known that before today Microsoft have been the only ones to actively block this and now they dont and it freaking awesome. You guys can now perhaps get the awesome ffxiv and play with everyone not just xbox players,we can blow each otherup in rocket league. The quick ur move sony,Nintendo posts suck they already allow it(hell maybe xbox can get its first Dq title now in the form of dq10 who knows). Point is this is awesome news for everyone, only big bottleneck now are the developer

I don't even know this Microsoft anymore

That line made me laugh harder than it should have.

Serious question though, can any developers chime in as to how different save files are across platforms? I kind of wonder if the next step could be something along the lines of cross-platform saves.

This is great, assuming everyone is on board.

Maybe trying to prepare a united front against the expanding mobile market? Who knows.

Wait, do you think the "I'll buy it on PS4 because my friends are there" mindset is about cross-plattform play?

What? I don't understand what you mean. No?

I'm saying, theoretically, Microsoft has more to gain by allowing cross-console play, and Sony has more to lose (primarily the advantage of people choosing a PS4 and PS4 versions of a game because they have more friends on that system).

Sony and Microsoft gain equally (cross-console play), which means that the relative gain of both is nil, but Sony forfeits more of its platform advantage.

I think this is a huge plus for PC gamers, because people who like CoD, Titanfall, BF, etc... on PC don't have as big of a population as the console peeps.

I applaud this. I hope developers jump on board.

But I do wonder how KB/M vs. controller is going to work out... unless they force you to use a controller on the PC? Hope not.

Maybe just different lobbies based on input method?

Sony already allow cross-play lol

We are playing against PC users in a lot of games since day 1.

Rocket League was closed only on Xbone... now they will join the party with PS4/PC users.

Yeah, what's in it for Sony? I don't see them agreeing to this.

Holy fuck. I know that. I'm talking about PS4/Xbox cross play, which they don't yet, hence the text of the blog post in the OP which explicitly ends with MS asking Sony to agree to it.

This is what people are asking for when they are asking for Sony to agree.

Huh? Sony won't lose anything. They are already leading the race and nothing at this point will change that. People will buy a PS4 if they want a ps4. This is good news for everyone. MS, Sony nor PC players lose out on anything, but this might help insure mp games last longer and the playerbase will be much bigger and not segmented.

Everyone wins really.

That's the only option. Use a controller, or use a KBM and play with other PC players.

I'm curious if that's enforceable though. I imagine it would be easy to get around that, right? In which case I'd very much avoid playing against PC players.
