Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

And this "console upgrades will happen" news isn't new. Before the PS3/360 came out I remember reading on IGN about those systems potentially being able to have add-ons and such to upgrade without getting a brand new console. It was around E3 I think the year the PS3's pricing was announced if I remember right. I remember someone in Sony specifically saying the PS3 will do that in it's years but it just never happened.

The only difference is that instead of it happening last gen it appears it's happening this yet. I just wonder if we'll have to get brand new consoles or just "add-ons". I wouldn't mind an add-on.

True! And just because Sony is briefing developers on this device doesn't mean it's 100% going to happen, or that it's going to happen any time soon. But those in this thread calling it bullshit should really read the whole story (and look at our history of reporting).

Or even look at Scoops history of reporting. He was the one that broke the Xbox One fiasco after all.

Thanks to HSA they could add accelerators to the SoC that help the GPU & CPU out while using less power.

So a PS4 game could be made to run in 4k on this new system while running 1080P on the PS4.

I have no problem with faster iterations of consoles, zero problem.

That said, I need a guarantee that the OS Sony uses will be the same in the future, IOS style. Backwards compatibility needs to be the focus.

In this camp I trust Microsoft more with their Windows 10 platform than I do Sony's.

Also, I hope devs take in mind more than the latest console when designing their games.

Why? Klepek was very much one that was pushing the notion that third party publishers were pressuring Sony to have DRM in their system or else they'd drop support.

Which they probably doing after seeing MS propose it, but Sony called the devs' bluff, said no, stole all the momentum, and things played out as they have.

Doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

I'd be okay if the console future was like:

-A new $400 console comes out every 3 years
-Trade in the last console to get the new one 50% off

Is that reasonable? Maybe 25% off? There has to be some kind of incentive here, video game consoles are not cell phones. You can't just crank out a new one every three years and expect people to drop $400 on it.

Insane For Sony
PS4.5 doesn't make sense to me.

I'm of the opinion that this is the PS5 being reported on.

Sony is possibly cutting this gen short.
The difference between PS4.5 and PS5 is that you wouldn't be able to play the PS5 games on PS4. Here's you'll be able to play the same exact game on both only it will look/perform better on 4.5. Devs know what they're talking about.

If this really is what it sounds then Sony can shove its hardware. I just sell my PS4 and never buy another Sony hardware again.

Paying $400 for console that will get replaced by a better version 2-3 years later is not acceptable for a lot of us who live in this side of the world.

Microsoft is about to do this too, and Nintendo already does it. So what? Are you done with gaming, or are you running to PC (which is massively hypocritical)?

Incremental walled garden will still be better than full on PC for those technology phobic peoples (evils drivers are tricksies I tell you, TRICKSIES!).

Given it would likely be on x86 the difference in PS4.5 and PS5 is .5 PSs.

This makes no sense. Why would they do this?

I understand Microsoft and Nintendo have to try some risky moves to get back on track, but Sony is winning.

The market is with Sony. All they had to do is keep doing what they are doing, wait for Nintendo and Microsoft to release their hardware succesors, and in 2018 or 2019 release a backwards compatible PS5 that blows their competitors offerings out of the water.

It looks so easy from outside...

Didn't Netflix mention last year that sony was planning on releasing a new PS4 that could output 4k video but not 4k for gaming? Also, wasn't Sony quiet at CES regarding UHD blurray players. Hmmm

What does this mean for people with a Sony console without internet though?

Kotaku heard PS5 but they thought it wouldn't be a big rumor against the NX controller leak so they added 4.5

Well played kotaku. well played.
Makes sense to be the PS5.

It is already time to start to work in the new generation machine.

And I guess now every game for PS4 will run natively on PS5 if they keep the same arch x86.

Console generations don't matter anymore.

well yeah when you live in a world where phone upgrades are almost yearly which are in these days more of a necessity than a commodity in the "connected world"
it would kind of make sense for other technologies to "adapt" similar models
it just makes a lot of sense in hindsight, technological advances just keep pushing on

I did read it. Just because multiple developers heard the same thing doesn't make it true though. Rumors can get started and catch on for any number of reasons. I remember your own Patrick Klepek saying he heard PS4 was going to have always online DRM too, back in 2013.

I can see that being true. They probably changed their minds after the Microsoft fiasco

Not sure how to feel about this. As long as the price is decent I might upgrade. I'll wait for true comparisons though before buying.

Why would they do that? They have zero reasons for that. PS4 is destroying everything.

Man... I sure hope this is not true.

When I say cut the gen short, I mean that relative to last gen which was 7-8 years long.

Going by this news, their next console will be probably launch around late 2017 or 2018, which is a return to the old console upgrade cycle.

Now, if they released PS4.5 this year or next, then that's some stunning bullshit.

What i'm thinking, if there is any truth to this, then it's an end of the generation solution that Sony is thinking of. Basically instead of buying a new console you could just buy an upgrade for the PS4. The Kotaku rumor even says that it appears to be an exploratory situation right now. So it's not something set in stone or something that's going to happen any time soon.

no... instead of doing PS3 to PS4 type of new console where you lose EVERYTHING you had with PS3 in order to move to new platform with limited number of launch titles, Sony (and MS?) are planning to make essentially a PS5 that will be 100% compatible with PS4.

This is great for everyone involved - for people sticking to PS4, they can keep playing all latest games, and for people buying PS5 they can keep their library of older titles as well. This is particularly awesome for developers.

I dont see any downside to this at all.

I ain't getting yearly PS4s just for Sony games. They are crazy to think many people would do the same, like MS is being crazy too.

This isn't a phone.

Neither am I. I'll be sticking with Xbox One and PS4 for a few years and still get all the games anyway until I am ready to upgrade. See how that works?

I'd be in the dick
Like with the Xbox news I'm OK with something like this every 3 years or so but I'm not sure how popular it would be. Hopefully they maintain the PS4 base spec and just have the overhead for 4k at the target framerate.

Kinda hope this isn't true, prefer the current life-cycle of consoles to something more along the mobile/tablet market.

How long till we start seeing this on Game Cases and Game Descriptions.

"Requires: 123ABC Hardware Upgrade to work."
"Game performance may differ on selective hardware."

Yay... can't wait.

More like

"Minimum Console Req."
"Recommended Console Req."

As long as you're only expecting minimal power upgrades at $400, sure.

And the only discount you'll get is trading it in at a GameStop. Sony wouldn't be interested in losing money for the purpose of trading up.

If they are adding stuff like 4k Blueray, better WiFi, HDMI passthrough, and built in VR support (instead of the breakout box) and not really messing with the game engine stuff, I don't see much of a problem.

Add a Vita slot and make a premium version that plays PS3 disks, and I will give you a wheelbarrow full of money.

Yeah, it is in Sony's best interest to keep this generation going. And if Microsoft is trying to soft reboot the generation then releasing something like a PS4.5 would be a good counter.

Splitting the platform when high dev costs are already a burden?

They must have an idea about how to pull this off, it seems crazy on the surface

Wait when it was about Xbox i remember lots of complaints about upgrades, i guess now instead that's a awesome news right?

I'm a little late to the thread... but I'm seeing plenty of complaints.

Personally I'm all for it. This gen's hardware is pathetic, and I don't want to be stuck with it as long as last gen.

Doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

After the smoke started clearing out everything started pointing toward the DRM being an initiative that MS were pushing on their own rather than something third party publishers were interested in.

I'm hyped if this is true. As long as the content is available on both consoles I'm fine with paying more for upgraded graphics/resolution/fps every 3-4 years. Though business wise I have no idea how viable this is.

PS3 7-8 years cycle was so fucking long and this needs to end.

Sony started talking to developers FIVE years before PS4 came out.
The PS5 is closer then five years away.

Mainly because Sony was transitioning for the first time to a PC architecture X86/64. Sony (&MS) will now be on the same architecture going forward, upgrading the hardware components over time. All software works on all hardware revisions, and the user-base will no longer reset with new a console. Console generations will be over and consumers will be given more choice.

With Klepeck and Schreier behind this story I absolutely believe this is something Sony is working on and briefing devs about. Those guys know reporting.

That said, Sony can change their mind at any time. They might not see the need to release the 4.5 if VR doesn't take off.

If the rumors about nVidia's new pascal architecture and it's ridiculous processing advantage over current 9xx cards are true, I could see a 4K box on par in graphic settings with 1080p PS4 games - just running at a higher resolution - being true and not costing more than 450-500 bucks, but to be of the same architecture as the PS4 and not making development much more complicated, they would have to stick to an APU-design (not CPU+GPU in two chips) coming from AMD and we haven't heard of new AMD architectures.

" PS 4.5 " doesn't surprise me at all after Phil Spencer on Xbox upgrading, but 4K? There is something off here. Patrick Klepek has good sources though... and so does Totillo. We'll see.
