I dunno, not really a big jump, is it? I know they have to counter Nintendo but this feels completely unnecessary. I will probably end up buying it but I wish I didn't have to.

Seems pretty pointless unless it's the painful reality of incorporating VR technology in an already dated design.

My ps4 runs like a jet engine for certain games so I don't have faith in another one atm.

Okay, this sounds a lot more like what I expected.

The commitment to keeping ALL PS4 games compatible on both systems, with only cosmetic upgrades for NEO Mode (and not new gameplay features, or entire games) is key, and I hope they stick with that. Otherwise some of the goodwill they've managed with the PS4 so far may start to erode.

Yeah, it's a tricky situation. They have to keep the userbase together, but blocking any sort of exclusive content/games/etc... it will always be held back by the base PS4. Then again, I suppose that is the point, but it makes the sell a lot harder IMO, especially if there isn't an upgrade plan.

There was 10x more last gen systems out when we got hit with all the cross-gen games when the PS4/Bone gen began. Take a look at how garbage the last gen versions were optimized.

Wat kinda lame comparison is this....

This isn't the next numbered console, or 8+ yrs into the cycle... Ppl were starving for new consoles

This gen will already be 3 years by the time this systems come out .
Also what are these well optimised titles unless you only counting first party stuff .
As time goes on we were going to see drop in PS4X1 games either way .

The difference doesn't seem significant enough for that to happen. I guess we'll find out when they announce this thing but for now the power increase doesn't seem that much

It doesn't seem like that big a spec bump.

Yeah. I'll end up grabbing one as I don't have a PS4 at all atm but if I already had the OG PS4 there doesn't seem to be much incentive to upgrade right now. Better off waiting a while until we see base modes start running like shit.

"Neo Mode" better mean 1080p/60fps for every fucking game! No more bullshit. this should have been the standard for the reg PS4.

Good luck with that.

GAF loves Sony so much that they're reciprocating with the Console's codename.

I greatly look forward to trying to build a competitive PC for the same price.

Assuming the GPU architecture is just the same as AMD's 3xx series,it looks between a 380x and a 390 in raw power, which would at least go a fair way to making games a higher resolution. Maybe 1440p upscaled to 4k for most games, but native 4k for the less demanding?

this doesnt sound like the jump I had hoped for.

Graphics guys, how big of a difference in graphics can we expect or is the jump so small that we only will see better frame rate?

If the specs are right, the GPU will be an updated architecture, double the compute units, and a clock speed boost on top of that. Doesn't sound small to me. Not 4K ready or anything, but not small.

Wonder if there will be a trade in program. Would seem like most of the people who would want this in the first place would be the early adopters.

I don't really get what's terrible. Even if you decide to keep your regular PS4, you are losing absolutely nothing. Those who want PS4k now have that option too.

You can't live your life in a constant state of envy and feeling inadequacy just because you perceive someone else to have a little bit nicer gadgets than you. No matter how far you go in life, there will always be someone with more material wealth. You need to learn contentment or you'll always be miserable.

The problem is that games are probably going to run like shit unless we shell out for the new model. I just got a PS4 late last year, I'm not about to buy ANOTHER PS4 just so I can play games adequately. If a game runs like shit on my original I refuse to buy it.

some of the hyperbole "hey to 15fps for the base game" It's clear based on this the OG PS4 will be the base and the Neo version will have some minor performance upgrades. This is mostly about getting 4k out the door.

Some of you act like your old PS4 is now completely useless.

This, even ND says they haven't fully harnessed PS4's potential, let alone any third party studio. That being said an enhanced PS4 to run all games native 1080p/60fps has me very excited. Can the Witcher III run at 1080p/60fps? or Bloodborne? or Batman:Arkham Knight? or BF4? I am in if either one of these games or all are running at 1080p/60fps on Neo!

ok cool. will hope for a big difference as I really want one if thats the case.

So really with those specs, and with how many years it's been, it's sounding more like a Revision of Hardware, sorta like a Slim Model would be, but since there's no real desire to make the thing any smaller, it's just getting a slight tweak instead. If anything Sony might try and just pass this off as a new PS4 Model that's capable of 4k Media Playback, and only briefly hint that games can be better on it.

I look forward to all the questions sony is going to get when they release the ps5. So, why should the consumers buy this console when you're probably just going to release an upgraded version?

Devs are still going to target PS4/X1 as a baseline.

Glad to hear this drop, its basically a minor refresh of the PS4 to allow native 4K display but most games are almost certainly going to stick to 1080p since a 10-15% boost in CPU/GPU is nowhere near what you need to render at 4k.

I'll definitely be upgrading and moving to a 4k TV at the same time, but more or less nothing really changes. Hoping they manage to slim it down a little bit too.

grats to GB for scooping this megaton!

Different textures and assets, probably not. But I could see the NEO mode using more sophisticated lighting models, physics, particle effects and impacts to non-essential things like enemy death animations, blood splatter, etc.

That's what I was thinking. Just thinking that many of the games will gimp the textures so it runs at a decent Framerate on the OG PS4. I can only imagine people paying another $400 will expect more.

Even with cards that push close to 6.0Tflops, 30fps @ 4k can be a frame pacing nightmare.

Ahhh, some of the posts here... The usual GAF overreaction.

What exactly were you expecting? You only have yourself to blame for your personal fan fictions.

Was about to finally buy a PS4 - will wait and see how this shakes out now though, see what MS and Nintendo have lined up first...

Pretty much. This gen is JUST getting started and we're seeing some really nice, well optimised titles for PS4/XB1. I really think this will impact PS4 momentum.

Why, base PS4 will get a price drop and it's already pretty cheap and selling like hot cakes. The games incoming for the base PS4 like Uncharted and Horizon looking fracking awesome as it is. Those who haven't bought a PS4 yet have a cheaper option or the Premium version which i can see most people going for if its about the same price PS4 was initially. Either way PS4 expands its user base from top to bottom and bottom to top. Either system plays any and all games, there's no splintering there.

My guess for keeping such similar hardware (CPU/GPU) is that it's probably easier for the devs to scale/optimize their games to both versions.

Why not? The ps4 has most of its games run at 1080p at 30fps so an upgrade should at least hit 1080p/60fps or else its useless.

Nah. Framerate is generally CPU limited on PS4. And the CPU boost isn't big enough for 60fps. The CPU/GPU gap is going to be fucking massive on this thing.
