Minecraft as underperforming makes no sense. Like...what did they expect? It's a slow burn kinda game. It doesn't go on sale. They haven't updated the W10 version in ages either.

OS upgrades have never played a huge role in OS market share on PCs. The new OS is usually sold with a new PC.

Regardless, a graphically intensive video game is not targeted at all PC users --- it's made for gamers. The adoption of Windows 10 among gamers is far beyond what the global adoption rate might suggest. It has recently passed Windows 7 on Steam: http://venturebeat.com/2016/06/01/windows-10-adoption-passes-windows-7-on-steam/. ~40% of Steam users is nothing to scoff at.

Not only that but win 10 adoption has passed windows 7 in the US...the most important market for Microsoft

I honestly don't think that the Scorpio will do much better than the XBO, specially if it launches at a higher cost than the PS4K and with those rumored specs its looking pretty likely that it will end up being the most expensive "new" box out of the two.
It's not like they're going to stop selling the more budget-friendly Xbox One Slim. They can target the low end and the high end market at the same time, and the upper limit of what the high end will spend is blurry. It's what Apple has been doing for years with great success.

This generation is a repeat of the PS2/GameCube/Xbox generation. Sony far and away the dominant force whilst Microsoft and Nintendo are merely an acquired taste.

I can't help but feel that Xbox One is where good exclusives go to die.

If I were Microsoft, I'd put all first party games on Xbox One and PC... Steam included. Do what's best for the games and stop trying to make Xbox One and Windows Store happen.

“First-party studios isn’t doing so well. Halo 5 is a big miss, versus projections. Minecraft is a big miss, versus projections. Compared to either one of those, Lionhead is practically a rounding error. But I think if your division is under-performing, you have to go to your boss with something on the altar.”

If this continues, how long until Phil loses his job?

It's exactly that. People are missing the context and jumping straight on Minecraft underperforming overall when it's about underperforming on a single platform.

Minecraft is doing crazy numbers, just not on the Windows store.

Minecraft on the store isn't even out of beta...if they have expectations that aren't being met then they are crazy

That wasn't the context of the minecraft quote

this is

I would say that is an overall projection since it refers to axing studios and mentions Halo 5 which isn't even on the store.

That comes after the first mention of Minecraft which is the quote I picked out where the interviewee is summing up the points he's already made, so the Windows 10 store context is still inferred.

The Slim will be going head-to-head with the existing PS4 which has already proven the less desirable of the two.

If this continues, how long until Phil loses his job?

The shelf life of an Xboss is not that long.

Im surprised hearing this about Minecraft, isnt this selling like bonkers?

Not surprised about Halo 5...

I presume they are talking about the non-java on the windows store? Not really a big surprise considering the main positive of java version is modding and most people have a modded version sitting around.

Actually, I nearly forgot about the Xbox One version as well. I see more people talk about the original instead of that.

I'm just talking about price, which for the low end market is really all that matters. By the time Scorpio launches, I fully expect the Xbox One Slim to be $249, which makes it more safe for them to make the Scorpio more expensive.

Is it though when the "below expectations" quote is mentioning first parties not looking good and games like Halo 5? I would say that is far from clear.

Honestly, given what's selling today, I don't think he was really wrong.

The main miss he made is that on consoles, you sell a $60 game, and then you flood people with endless DLC and/or microtransactions along with new content for years.
Your totally right. I think it's pretty ironic that that they let go of bungie cause they wanted to make destiny which is a game as a service game.

And what do you think ps4/ps4k will be then?

Microsoft must have some seriously unrealistic projections lmao. This reminds me of Square Enix's bullshit sales projections.

Winning over the fans is not enough. That's Spencer's shortcoming. He's trying to cater to the hardcore Xbox fans and not the general audience. He doesn't really have much of a vision other than to turn the Xbox One into a PS4 clone which was in turn a 360 clone.

Don and the rest of the team really missed up the Xbox one from the beginning. I see what they wanted to do though. I think the Xbox 360 was heavily used for things like Netflix and such, they thought that turning the Xbox one into more of a multimedia device was really going to help it along. I guess the online-only thing was part of the strategy, but their marketing was trash and I think they never expressed any advantages of it and how it could help gaming.

I think their current strategy is extremely beneficial gamers and it did help bring good will. The issue is that it is really dependent on the exclusives themselves and the PS4 is basically the Xbox 360 now; everyone is going to buy the PS4 to play multiplatform games and play other games that don't turn up on the Xbox like Jrpgs. It would be a challenge to beat the PS4 in those terms now.

I think they are doing the " All in one" thing now again, but this time with Windows 10. I guess the hope is proved more unique aspects to the Xbox one.

Microsoft hasn't really done much with Minecraft, so I dunno what they were expecting. The PC version of the game will always be better than the console versions, which don't receive updates nearly as fast.

It's one of the consistently best-selling games in history month-by-month (if not the best), but Microsoft hasn't done anything major with the IP to encourage sales, especially on Xbox One.

Not really a surprise and confirms what's been obvious for a while.

W10 I think is good but their position was so badly hurt by W8 they had to skip W9 to literally distance W10 away from W8 and offer it for free. They no doubt projected enormous uptake but underestimated the continued impact of W8. I'll never understand why they shoved a mobile device OS into people's faces on desktops and laptops: it was a huge, huge cock up.

As for XB1 and game sales it's symbiotic. Issues with reveal and design choices vs a competitor who simply read market better cost them early on and lost them momentum. Then they scrabbled to respond and made too many mistakes. MCC problems hurt H5 for sure for example.

They painted themselves into a corner in a number of areas and W10 store and XB1 floundering us the result. W10 is okay apart from mini ugly W8 hangover in start menu.

They'll survive but they've made a glut of bad choices. And all the while Valve quietly took PC gaming market from under their noses.

this just sounds like poor projecting...

less & less people are operating in a desktop PC environment [or laptop PC environment], tablets & iphones have created a whole generation of computer-less people [take my wife, and many of my friends as examples].

you really need to take this shit into consideration when making these projections MS...

edit: i realize my example is anecdotal, obviously, but aren't we always hearing about / reading about the decline of computer sales etc.?

Where's the rumor here? More like SHOCKING NEWS, we know for a fact that all of them (except for Minecraft) hugely underperformed.
I even remember that sometimes before W10 launch MS publicly said they wanted it to be installed on 1 billion devices within two years: there's a reason why they're sticking W10 down everyone's throat without users' consent for months now, lol.

Nope, three years.

Gaming pc's are on the rise. It is the office pc's that are on the decline. I mean, you don't need a new pc to run spreadsheets.

No, the sales split was way bigger back then.

Aren't we pretty much seeing a split of 55-60% (PS4), 25-30% (Xbox One), 10-15% (Wii U)?

I know the PS2 gen was pretty much 85-90% PS2, with the other two systems getting the scraps. This current gen, as well as the PS1 gen was definitely not like that.

Slow down there... Phil Spencer is reason why PS4 only leads 2:1 and not 10:1

He has really done a great job. He came aboard a sinking ship and managed to make it seaworthy again.

Halo 5 was a combination of Halo 4, MCC, and Halo 5 being the weakest game in the series. Halo is my all time favorite franchise and I'm currently weeping for its future. If we are talking about executives that need to be placed on the chopping block let's start looking at whoever is making the creative/art/story/gameplay decisions over at 343.

...lacks reading comprehension.
I can't imagine the mental gymnastics required to look at Minecraft and say it underperformed. They recently announced they've sold over one hundred million copies.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-06-02-minecraft-sales-pass-the-astonishing-100m-milestone

It's probably relating to the Win 10 version. They launched it with Windows 10 but it never became the game that drives Windows 10 updates. Which is only natural, because the Java version is superior in every single way. But they betted on it anyway. They probably expected Minecraft to double Win 10 adoption rate and sell a game with every second free OS or something along the lines.

There's a fair amount of love to hate going on in this thread.

Then there's no way it will be as powerful as the rumors say.
Yes there is. By the sounds of things both boxes contain a very similar gpu. The difference could be sony's is under clocked to keep the heat down. If Microsoft continue with an external brick and a bigger box than sony they can very easily be competitively priced.

Lets not get carried away, all he did was the only option they had, reverse course and re-focus on games, you know what every game console platform holder has ever done....

Lol at people thinking Scorpio will turn things around...

I mean it could make things better for them. they have too many things against them a technically sound console is a good bonus to the turn around phil has been pulling.

If this course of action was so obviuous why didn't Mattrick do it. I don't think anyone knew exactly what phil was going to do. He's done a good job on being creative an innovate with is ideas beyond the status quo that your saying he's following and he should be commended if we're being fair.

So, is it the Wins10 version of Minecraft?
Most likely. I doubt Mine raft is underperforming unless they were being crazy with their projections.

Minecraft underperforming on W10 Store? I'm sure it is. To be blunt probably everything on the store is. Underperforming on XB1? Yeah probably too.

I think basically they're referring to MS ecosystem platform sales vs non MS ecosystems.

Poor quantum break. Another victim of W10 Store for sure.

What turn around? Things are the same now as they were 2 years ago sales wise

Being the best performing console for multiplatforms is certainly a start. I haven't seen anyone saying it'd be a game changer, but it certainly will help.
You've luckily avoid the NEO/Scorpio thread then! Plenty of crazy talk (from both camps) in there.
