this is how Infamous Second Son looks on actual PS4 with DOF effect applied (and yes, I know – different dev, different engine, but still):

So I'm pretty much sure Insomniac can surpass ^ this in Spider-Man.

It's funny because you didn't pick the most flattering screenshots and even then Infamous looks good if not gorgeous. Goddamit Sucker Punch, just come out of your cave already!

I still cannot believe this day has a come and we finally have a big budget, big time Spider-Man game in the works.

I mean, it took decades to reach this point and many of us were just used to the terrible licensed games Activision was putting out.
It was sad. Every single time one of those would be announced you had two choices:

1) Hope for the best and a change.
2) Be realistic and know that no love and real budget was being put into that game.

And, to be honest, it was painful.

Painful because we were missing out on years of gaming for our favorite character, and an incredible wasted potential.
And to this day, I don't understand how a company like Activision that can market huge sellers like COD and Destiny, could not realise how much money they could have made with this IP.
It is mind-blowing.
Talk about non-sense.

Just to give you an idea, Spider-Man 2 came out 12 years ago, and that is considered by many the best Spidey game ever made.
Yes, after that we did have some decent games like Shattered Dimensions, but even there, they were *decent*, but not games you could compare to some of the best received games on the market.
So, I find hilarious that a character that is a pop culture phenomenon like Spidey is only NOW getting a serious push as gaming mascot.
Why did it take so long?
Not his fault. Just alot of incompetence and many bad choices made by some executive guy.

But, I am happy.
I wanted to believe the rumors were true and I wanted to believe there was still hope.
That trailer is gorgeous, the music is fantastic, the animations are beautiful and the first look is super promising.
At this point, if everything goes well, I will look at Sony and Insomniac as the people that saved Spidey from being a mistreated cash grab cow.
And thank you too Marvel :)

Exactly how I feel, although SM2 was released in 2004, so 12 years ago, not 16. Stop making me feel old :)

Everything seems so right about this. Mature Peter (FINALLY, I think we've had enough high schooler/young adult Spidey plots), jaw-dropping graphics, a dev with a portfolio of games with extremely fun combat and gameplay mechanics...

They just have to nail the swinging. All I need is a minute of in-game web swinging footage and I'm pre-ordering it and buying a PS4.

EDIT: if this one succeeds, they need to make a Superior Spider-man game. I want my Spider-Man/Punisher hybrid.

Ops, you are right. Edited it :)

I really wonder about what is going to be in the game, how alive NY will feel, and what structure they are going for.
I also wonder if using the Sunset Overdrive tech saved them some time and they will be able to fill this game with lots of content.
And what about a multiplayer component?

Goddamn, son.

On the other hand, I'm looking forward to seeing some behind-the-scenes dev diary stuff from you guys! Especially for the animations and shit, because those flips in the coffee shop are insane.
So what are everyone's hopes regarding main villains (besides Mr. Negative)?

Spot, please.

I'm hoping for more of the lesser-known villains, but with a good mix of some classics. I also want Shocker in the game just because I love that idiot. Kingpin, Tombstone, and Hammerhead would be great too, to add to the organized crime villains.

I can't believe it either.
I've wanted a good Spider-Man game for ages.

Wasnt too long ago that I made this thread:

Nobody predicted something like this would be coming along so soon.

Kinda surpassed my expectations when I saw spidey's agility, he's really agile and mobile like it's ninja gaiden or something. Interesting.

It was a bad idea for Sony to reach out to Insomniac instead of their own 1st party studio. If this becomes a huge success and they decide to make a sequel, what's stopping Marvel to cut the middleman out (Sony) and just go straight to Insomniac to make the sequel multiplatform since Sony doesn't own the IP?

I see what you're saying. All it means really is that deal must have been really good for Sony for them to agree to this. Sony learned their lesson from Crash and Spyro.

Amazing Spider-Man 1 is actually pretty good, you guys. This will be better no doubt, but if you're gagging for some cheap Spidey action in the meantime it's a lot of fun. Graphics are very nice, and there's some surprisingly fun stealth mechanics in which you can web up dudes while sneaking around the ceiling like an Arkham game.

Cloud swinging though.

I wish people who where moaning about the "they're not a first party studio" thing would watch the video that covers this.

This isn't verbatim, but maybe it could just be quoted then the question is raised again.

Scott Rohde and Adam Boyes - E3 2016 LiveCast | PS4

Scott Rohde - PlayStation Software Product Development Head for Sony Worldwide Studios America
Adam Boyes - VP, Publisher & Developer Relations at Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC
John Drake - Director of Portfolio Strategy at PlayStation
Scott Rohde said:
I love talking about this because this is one of the first really true partnerships between third and first parties. Marvel comes to Third-party (Adam Boyes) and says "Hey, can we do something here".

What they said was "We would love to see a game treated, one of our properties treated with same the revereance that first parties treat their heroes". The talks just instantly happened and we staretd thinking that Insomniac would be a perfect fit, they already had next-gen tech up and going and....(Interupted by Adam Boyes)

????? talked tp Insomniac, John Drake is handling Marvel on our side. It's just the perfect marriage of when two groups work so well together and they have the same exact thing in mind so....
They sisn't ask for it to be developed internaally, they wante a game that people could think was a forst party game.

It's being made by Insoniac, there isn't a team out there that is closer to being first-party without actually being so. They've shared tech previously with Sony, they have a really good relationship with them and on this game, as was true with Ratchet & Clank, they are being treated as a first party.

What lesson is that? What would Sony have to lose from agreeing to have Spider-Man be an exclusive on their console?

Is this a cutscene is is someone playing this?
ConventionalJitteryAmurminnow.gif

There's very little information on the game at the moment, just that it's running live on a PS4.

I think it's all very early at the moment from looking his gif, there are big empty white spaces outside of that bar. A lot of the taller buildings are missing from the main video. Although what we see is all very polished, I'd imagine that things being produced to the same level as that bar are at an absolute minimum at the moment.

Most of the areas that we actually see Spider-Man in are exactly the same street and it's even possible that all the shots happen in exactly the same place. Because this is something that Insomniac has been working on for a while, because of how Sony has brought them as a first party, because they've had a headstart on the PS4 in relation to having an engine, I think they\ve used maybe one or two locations that they've polished the hell out of.

Just looking at the video you can see that there is very little evidence that thety already have a city built and running, the way it cuts from scene to scene.

I do think that they're some way from being able to talk about apart from in broad sweeping strokes at teh moment.

Reminds me of those Assassin's Creed shortcuts through a building that launch you out the other side fluidly as you gain full control again. I don't see how that could be done in gameplay in any other way.

Very possible that you're right. A little disappointing if true but I don't think any studio out there has tech to make animation transitions that smooth that aren't a canned sequence.

Because they are funding an IP to be successful that they don't control. I am saying the deal must have been great from them to agree on such terms, because they rarely ever fund projects based properties they don't own.

Again, we can't really comment on this stuff without knowing the terms of the contract, but I would be surprised if Sony didn't have at least an option for a sequel depending on the success of this game.

I'm not sure if it's been posted before, but here's the product description from Sony's site

Starring the world’s most iconic Super Hero, Spider-Man PS4 (working title) features the acrobatic abilities, improvisation and web-slinging that the wall-crawler is famous for, while also introducing elements never-before-seen in a Spider-Man game. From traversing with parkour and utilizing the environment, to new combat and blockbuster set pieces, it’s Spider-Man unlike any you’ve played before.

Marvel and Insomniac Games have teamed up to create a brand-new and authentic Spider-Man story. This isn’t the Spider-Man you’ve met before, or seen in a movie. This is an experienced Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in New York City. At the same time he’s struggling to balance his chaotic personal life and career while the fate of nine million New Yorkers rests upon his shoulders.

Games get better and worse as they near release as games never really come together fully until the very end. That probably is the game but always do so knowing full well that it will change.

Im talking about graphically, since some people are doubting that footage isn't in-game.

Like honestly, comic books heroes make ridiculous money across every medium. It doesn't take a genius to figure out there is money to be made by doing it right in a game

When do you think we will get the official name and see more? I'm guessing PSX. This is going to be a nice trump card for Sony conferences going forward.

How is it a bad idea? First, Disney/Marvel stopped publishing games on consoles. They license their IPs and franchises now, with Star Wars being the best example. Second, if this becomes a success and they want to make a sequel, Marvel could not just cut them from the deal as only Sony would be able to make the sequel as they would own this game's series as an IP (since they're publishing it) even if they do not control the Spider-Man IP. And since Marvel wanted Spider-man to be treated like a First-party property, I believe that they (Marvel) would not mind to keep it exclusive to Playstation, especially if it becomes a critical and commercial success.

Yea I think it's safe to say if this is a success. Spiderman is staying exclusive.

Can't wait for this. Insomniac nailed traversal in Sunset Overdrive and they proved with R&C that Spidey's humor won't be a problem either.

I hope they can implement varied mission design, with not every mission being either a fetch quest or a mission to save an NPC.

dont like the second son comparisons, sure it was pretty at launch but the city was lifeless, nyc is the antithesis to sucker punch's seattle, it has to be bustling everywhere they let you go or the whole thing falls apart.

it looked really busy in the trailer which is promising, hopefully there is not too much cut and paste going on with assets. its tricky, you gotta hit that vibrant/alive city feeling from above when spidey is swinging, but you dont want that stuff to look bad when you're on the ground

if they have the resources/outsourcing and backing from everyone involved it could turn out to be something really special.
