Miyamoto: "A new kind of Mario is coming", announcement possibly next E3

I really don't get the calls for an open world game. Mario should be more of a platformer than an adventure game. The very fact of running around in a 3D space was inherently cool back in Mario 64, but today?

They pretty much perfected the 3D Mario formula in SM3DW so I hope they don't deviate much from that.
It would be an open world platforming game.

Hopefully it takes inspiration from Dark Souls.

Seriously though, I would love huge, connected levels where you could get every star in one go without having to exit and reenter the level.

I just love SM3DW, I think it is a brillant game but for me it's not a real 3D Mario. Yes back in the day Mario 64 was a revolution but for me Sunshine was also fantastic and that was as well because of the freedom to explore, to chill in the dolphino plaza jumping around etc.
I want to see more of that in a 3D Mario and I think these two types of games can coexist.

I don't see why one game couldn't have both an open world and/or large areas in combination with areas that are tightly designed. Zelda appears to be handling it just fine.

This gets me very pumped as well

I really liked the Galaxy series but it still felt a little bit off to me

What I really want to see is a proper 6 year development cycle Super Mario 65

Just going by the 3D Mario series openness and the number of levels seem to directly take away from each other. Sunshine had small, tightly designed sections but not nearly as many as Galaxy, which didn't have as many as 3D Land and World which were almost nothing but those areas.

You can have both but some people want it to sway closer to one side than the other.

Of course here we have Zelda with it's big world + more than a hundred mini dungeons + regular dungeons on top of that...so I guess we could have plenty of both if Nintendo put that crazy level of manpower/time into it. Though I don't know if you can directly compare a mini dungeon with a Mario level.

I wouldn't want full on open world with big empty expanses between them, but levels that are more interconnected could be cool.

What is exciting about Mario is that it always finds a way to completely revolutionize platforming every few games.

A new kind of Mario can be anything.

I would've expected them to launch with the new 3D mario, but a 2D mario near launch and a 3D mario 18 months later.. Sounds ok to me.

Combined with animal crossing and mario kart around Q4 2017, with splatoon 2, retro studios game somewhere in between and launching with smash remastered and zelda gives you a nice line-up of heavy hitters for the first year and a half.

I'm playing through Mirror's Edge: Catalyst right now and I can't figure out why anyone would want another platformer to go in that direction. ME:C is at its best when it's out of the open-world and into a confined area like when you're unlocking a Gridnode. Those are absolutely fantastic. But running around the world just isn't what it was in the original game or like in the Gridnode sections. Platforming doesn't pose any real challenge during the open-world sections. And that's probably because they don't want to aggravate by having them constantly restart because they died while just running around the world.

Showing next E3?
Then not ready for NX launch... I wonder what will be the launch killer-app. No, BotW is a special case, it is not built from the ground for NX. There must be the "Wii Sports" equivalent.

Yes I suspect a Wii Sports/ Nintendoland equivalent for the NX to show the possibility of the gimmick. But alongside Zelda, I hope for a first party game like Luigi's Mansion 3/ Pikmin 4/ Animal crossing / Mario sport game and/or Retro's new game.

I predict Mario AR with Mario running around your house. The new people are probably people who worked on AR or VR systems in the past. But then again I am still projecting NX to be an AR goggles + tablet hybrid.

It'll probably launch with a New Super Mario Bros type thing. Seems like every Nintendo system gets one early in its life.

These "new" and "young" people are the best thing to happen to nintendo

Let's hope so. They haven't actually released anything yet, aside from Splatoon. At this point it's a bit like congratulating Square Enix for making more JRPGs - it hasn't actually paid off yet.

It is.
Nintendo is by far my favourite console dev but even I'm not afriad to admit that some of their stuff has become a bit too predictable.... which isn't odd at all when you consider how long they've been around.
Keeping some conventions is fine of course, but when you can't answer why a certain convention is being kept maybe it's time to start questioning whether to keep them or if it's for the best to change / thow them out.
It certainly looks and sounds like they're doing just that and I couldn't be more excited.
Honestly, it sounds like the failure of the Wii U is the best thing that could have happened to them because I'm sure that had a big influence in them addapting this kind of thinking.

I hope they're not going the Galaxy 3 rout for this. Never been a big fan of 3D Mario, but I really enjoyed 3d Land and World so I'd like them to do something that expands on that in exciting new ways.

Pretty weird thing to say when the NX doesn't even have a release date.

BotW is the killer app.

It will kill WiiU sales for sure and give NX the jumpstart it needs.

I've been playing ME:C as well, (it's great, everyone should play it) however Catalyst isn't a true open world due to hardware limitations. You can see the seams where you have to go through a loading zone or you are stuck in another elevator. Nintendo don't have to worry about reaching hardware limitations with Mario so they can make a larger more lived in open world

If we're talking about a Splatoon/Garage Games and Zelda-like shake-up, then bring it on. Although the main Mario games always did a really good job of offering something fresh already. imo.

NX GEN IS HERE!
I'm scared.

I want a Mario that exists in a 3D space and allows me to roam around a bit. Not really open world per say, but clear goals that I can get to, but plenty of secrets and places to visit before I get to Bowser.

YES! And a little more story based, please!

¨A new kind of Mario¨ has to mean that it's not so linear as the latest ones, right?

Nintendo Land was a Wii Sports-esque title and look how that did (they also launched with Mario). Wii Sports was a great game, and it was genius to bundle it in with the Wii, but you can't duplicate that. Though ironically, they are duplicating the same thing they did with Zelda by launching it on the old and new hardware. Twilight Princess was the killer app at launch for many people, so I can see them trying to carry the launch with Zelda as well. Perhaps Smash NX and some other stuff will tow the line.

But back to the main topic, I'm excited to see what they have in store. Mario has really never had a downturn except for maybe Sunshine. Afterwards, the Galaxy games redefined 3D platformers, the NSMB games modernized the 2D platformer and introduce multiplayer, and the 3D World series was a creative mix of both these styles. I admit, the first thing that comes to mind is "open world Mario" but I'm still not quite sure how that could effectively work.

I wonder if Nintendo does another "One game only" E3 again next year. Would be interesting to see the feedback if they only brought a single game again after launching a new platform.
