Berserk Musou (PS4/PC/Vita in the West) has first images shared by store flyer, info

The ending of the first Berserk anime series really repulsed me. Not liking seeing imagery from those final episodes on the flyer. Not trying to spoil anyone else's enjoyment, and I'm sure the game will be good since musou is a perfect fit, but I don't think I could play this.

That's a major plot point for the series and quite possible one of the most important moments in the entire manga/anime. It has to be shown.

Yo, so, I guess I'll be the voice of dissent here.

I liked Dynasty Warriors games, and the Warriors/Musou series in general. I only ever dabbled in them, but always had a good time. I got Hyrule Warriors, and it was fun, but I never really stuck with it.

I got caught up in the hype around the time Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi dropped on PS4, and pulled the trigger...

And I have to say, Sumeragi is to Lego Technics as Musou is to Duplo at this point, in my book. Like, you might have a special attack button that throws bombs or fires arrows or whatever. Beyond that, your combo options are mash X 14 times, or mash X and then mash Y at different times. The options feel limited, and there's only so much you can do in terms of having fun with it. It's mindless, for the most part, even with that whole dodge/exploit weakness mechanic Hyrule Warriors had.

In Sumeragi, and I don't exaggerate here, each character has gameplay depth approaching the level of a Devil May Cry 3 character. And there are 40 characters. With no clones. Some are fast, some are slow, one's basically a Zaku, another's basically Ryu...

Anyway, my point is, I really wish one of these companies would license their IP to Capcom's Basara team, so we could get a proper licensed beat em up (from someone other than Platinum).

Should I pull the trigger? I've never read manga/comics.

Brand Of Sacrifice temporary tattoo preorder bonus when

I remember a really good sandwich shop I used to go to that was near the foot of one my favorite mountains to hike that had a bunch of the same guys running and working there. I remember one of them took my order and turned around to start making my sandwich at the opposite counter and I noticed he had the brand of sacrifice on the back of his neck right where Guts did. Well one thing lead to another and my hiking trip was delayed for like an hour and a half while we nerded out about Berserk.

So, when it comes out on PC we replace all the BGM with Forces, right?

Get Vagabond instead. Unless you wanna be filled in on Berserk before you read the game. If you do, don't get discouraged by the art early on, Miura gets so much better, he probably has the 3rd best manga art after Inoue and Murata.

Musou game? Nahh fuck that

Why cant we get a good Nioh/Dark Souls style adventure game with amazing Berserk combat?

I know the dreamcast game was shit but it had the right idea.

Yeah I wanna hack and slash through a million enemy's without the fear of dying or have any challenge -_-

What a waste :(

Yeah, what a waste that they fit a manga about a man who 50% of the time is hacking through hordes of enemies with no fear of dying with a game genre about exactly that.

This thread made me check out the Berserk manga on a whim. Started just after the Griffith/Casca thing because I figure the game would fill that gap or I could watch the OVAs.

Was up until 2am reading. Absolutely brutal in a wonderful, disturbing way.

I'm looking forward to this but I agree it would be amazing if the Basara team was doing it, its a shame the games arent more well known because they do feel a step above in some ways.

You should really start from the beginning as you're missing out on a ton of character and world building. It sounds like you cut out one of the absolute best parts of the series and what is highly regarded as possible one of the best arcs in all of manga/anime. Go back and read it.

What are you doing?
Go back and read the volumes you skipped asap, no way in hell will and can the game (even the anime) cover and adapt this arc without missing stuff etc.

Shit, even people who watched the TV series should go back and read the manga. Later on, there are huge chunks of the story that the anime skips (due to those things kinda being inconsequential given where the anime ends.)

Not to pile on with everyone else but:

I don't even really like the Golden Age arc compared to the rest that I've read (I like the demons/horror, not battlefield tactics and whatnot) but it's worth it in the long run. Shit gets real as it progresses and leads to some of the darker more powerful stuff afterwards that's been hinted at throughout the series

Example:
The baby.
When I got to the true nature of it I was like "ohhh nooooooo" lol

Just to reinforce this for anyone who comes later and thinks that maybe the 6 people before me were wrong, reading from the start really adds a LOT to this, and nothing else gives you what the manga will.

The buildup to what the series becomes is huge, and something I'd never seen done so well in anything else. It really is a grand story and to see the whole scope you have to start from the beginning.

Its essential to most of the main characters and understanding the story.

Actually, I wouldn't call
Guts' one-man-stand against 100 soldiers
exactly effortless.

I'm sure I'll enjoy the game just like I enjoyed Hyrule Warriors and DQ Heroes, but I also agree with the sentiment that Berserk deserves much better than that.

I really hope the game focuses more on the boss battles than killing a load of enemies. I mean this is my ideal. As much as I love Musou, Berserk never really had that Musou feel. Though if we do not get a
Guts vs 100 men
I will be disappointed, but that is as much as I want in the terms of 'musou'.
I hope this is the Musou game where they crack boss battles.

Also if you want to get into Berserk, read it. The anime TV series and movies don't give you the full story which would be needed for later parts. Characters get missed out or not fleshed out enough, plus Mirua's art is gorgeous. Though I would recommend listening to the Berserk TV and film soundtracks as you read. Just make sure you've read the manga before you decide to get into this, you don't want the musou game to be your first experience.

The first couple of volumes were exactly what I wanted out of the series, so when it switched to origin/Golden Age I was like "man I don't really care about the backstory" but by the end of it I totally did haha

I'm going to watch the 25 episode anime series before I jump into this musou. That should catch me up enough to understand what the heck is going on.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
In Sumeragi, and I don't exaggerate here, each character has gameplay depth approaching the level of a Devil May Cry 3 character. And there are 40 characters. With no clones. Some are fast, some are slow, one's basically a Zaku, another's basically Ryu...

There is ALWAYS someone to derail any Musou thread by bringing up Basara. Gets really irritating given how different the experiences actually are(yet arguments pretty much boil down purely to which games have the most lavish combos).

But at least you were a bit more cordial about your preference, usually the Basara diehards just dump their angst in pointless drive-by postings.

You ain't wrong. Sengoku Basara is leagues ahead of DW in terms of gameplay and unlocks. In fact, it's leagues ahead of many, many games, including beat'em up titles. I'd go as far as to say it's the best ever created. It's stupidly good.

But that being said, it's not like Omega Force is no slouch as of late. There's still crazy things you can do in today's musou games, and they've gotten significantly better over each iteration, but I feel like because they are more objectives-based, we see a style focused on crowd control, powerup hopping (in the cases of Gundam Reborn and DW)/traveling using moves (SW4), and slightly better crowd control. And while SB has amazing characters, I feel like some of them get outshined a bit too much like poor ol' Tenkai, so you end up seeing character flaws significantly sooner.

So it kinda depends on how they handle this game. SB is about pummeling dudes and doing minor things, while the Warriors games have set themselves in completion of missions and such, and no one style is better than the other, but one works better for another game.

That being said, screw all that I've written, and let the SB team up with the Musou boys. It'll never happen, but one can dream.

Without the Golden Age its just an angry one eyed dude killing random monsters with a huge sword who is super pissed at a birdman.

I ended up selling Hyrule Warriors after I got Sumeragi.

Interesting. I'm probably biased towards the moment-to-moment gameplay and combat depth more than the overarching things being accomplished, mission-wise. I mean, the fact that I don't understand the language forces me to sort of try to figure out how to win, if it requires anything beyond "kill the guys represented by flashy icons on the map." Also, I'm a fighting game player, so I'm drawn to combat depth by default.

Eh, I think at this point the Musou games have all the ability in the world to be as good as the Basara games, but hte Basara games go for smaller rosters with more move variety where as the Musou games go for bigger rosters with less move variety but sitll a lot.

Like I'd put WO3 on level with any Basara.

They said there would be no dismemberment (at least not in the Japanese version, CERO D and all that), although they're hoping they'll manage to do something for non-human enemies.

EDIT: Based on the original interview (which was poorly translated by Play-Asia above... they weren't talking about "cut content", you guys!), it seems it should be be fine for monsters, really. Just not for humans.

Do you speak Japanese?

I know what you mean though I honestly feel like Musou titles were practically created for Berserk. This is the one time where I feel like it could potentially work better than any of the other ones (and believe me I hope it's amazing). I'm a large Fist of the Northstar fan too, and I enjoyed those two games, however I hope Berserk is even better.

Loving SW4 at the moment. I just wish Sengoku Basara 4 would get localized. I'd get that in a heart beat especially after hearing all the praise for it.

Yeah, you're not wrong. But generally the smaller fights are nothing. If the game had a higher difficulty than other musou games it could reflect that a bit more though.

A few years ago I would have felt the same, but they've gotten a little bit more experimental with licenced musou games and I think it could work well for this series if they give it proper respect.

Would Koei Tecmo be the ones publishing this in the west? I assume it's confirmed based on the thread title. If so, what is their normal turnaround time on these types of games? Debating whether I'll want to import this in September or wait for a localized version.

To be fair, people worried about the mindlessness of musou games should up the difficulty. Generally, in most games, it forces you to use the entirety of the systems at play, such as leveling up weapons properly, knowing what comes out of what combo string, and using powerups. DW8 is a whole different game on Chaos than it is Normal, and SW4 at least forces you to spec your gems properly and manage your other character's placement better.

I don't think I've ever played a Samurai Warriors game. I'll have to check out the latest one soon.

I think it's better than any DW game ever made.

Eh, I think at this point the Musou games have all the ability in the world to be as good as the Basara games, but hte Basara games go for smaller rosters with more move variety where as the Musou games go for bigger rosters with less move variety but sitll a lot.

WO3 was great, but it still felt dated because 8 wasn't out around that time (IIRC). I still don't think the two series are too dissimilar, but overall quality, musou games can reach the SB plateau in their own right. SW4 got very close, and OF just keeps leveling up.

Loving SW4 at the moment. I just wish Sengoku Basara 4 would get localized. I'd get that in a heart beat especially after hearing all the praise for it.

It won't. The spinoff might, since it's fairly self contained, but even that is reaching. Go import it now.
