New No Man's Sky Trailer: Trade

Aftershock LA
For naming conventions, I only plan on using Roman Numerals, and Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc, etc, for the end of planets, but the actual name of them I'm going to try to be original. I don't want to name my planets Vulcan, or Tatooine, or Hoth.

I will be naming them based off of the type of planet it is. So if it's a lush, jungle planet, I'll have a name for it that sounds exotic or lush, probably followed by a I, II, III, or Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and when those run out, >Name< Alpha I, >Name< Alpha II, etc, etc. If the planet is hot or cold, I'll try and come up with suitable names.

As for building structures, the only structures I'd want to be able to build are shelters. With the caveat that shelters are resource intensive to build. Like that that sheet metal they claim other buildings are made out of. If you want to build a shelter, it's going to cost a bit of that (ie, 20 Carite sheet to craft a small shelter). This shelter will only protect you from the cold and maybe acid rain, and it can be broken down, giving you back a certain amount of what you put in to build it (ie, cost you 20, when you break it down, you get 15 back, something like that). I don't want buildable structures that will take away from the challenge of survival, which is the games core. Perhaps you can build certain different types of structures that can protect you from various conditions (hot, cold, acid rain, poisonous, unbreathable atmosphere), but they don't last forever, and cost you precious resources, so you have to really be sure you want to camp there, or try and find a cave or building to hunker down in.

Being able to craft easy structures is going to take away a major component of the game, which is surviving the elements/creatures of the planet. I don't want that.

Can I message my friends and play together?
No

But what about PvP?
No

Okay, but maybe...
No

Can I at least ask about...
No. If it's about multiplayer, answer's probably no.

Imagine the headache if we discover that Murray has been slyly deceiving us and there's a more traditional element of multiplayer at some point, like after we get to the center of the galaxy and it unlocks something where we can eventually meet directly with our friends :)

Oh the horror the OT will be after that...

The screenshot of the buying/selling screen above shows an item called a "Fascination Bead"... good to know there are specific valuable items to be found in addition to just commodity-style resource trading. Also a good place to potentially stick some lore :)
Speaking of, is there any lore for this game?

Speaking of, is there any lore for this game?
There's a video about that
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBPF7uNZUfY
We always kind of say, "We shouldn't have a story, but we should have lore." There is a consistent narrative; the things that you see are there for a reason. There are buildings that are there because a certain race build them, and it looks like that race has built them.
More in the video, although it covers more about the comic and the stories it'll tell,

When it comes to lore, at the very least there'll be info about the warring factions potentially since that seems to be a bigger portion of the game.

READ:
And this is my speculation, bear that in mind..

There is an event you can choose to effect in each system that will impact others universes. I don't know the exact wording, so hopefully someone else can chime in, but basically, when asked about if you can destroy planets or do something that will be echoed in other player's universes, he said something along these lines.

So, presumably, helping a faction will boost their presence/aid them/etc.. which I'd imagine they'd be keeping track of to see if one faction pulls away from the others. So future DLC could be impacted if say, the warlike Vy'King faction starts dominating. My reasoning for this is those flags shown earlier in the thread -- helping a faction to set up an outpost (since we can't make our own shelters or outposts but clearly there is something akin to an outpost) can bolster them potentially. Who knows, maybe it could even impact the economy if Vy'King's start hoarding gaseous stuff, causing blockades, etc.

Extrapolating further.. let's say there is a powerful artifact in the center of the universe like the Halo Ring.. humans arriving first would react different as opposed if the Covenant arrived first. That could be one potential endgame -- unlikely since they've stated they want it to be a point where people can put down the controller and feel they got a complete experience.

I like the sound of all of this, but, didn't they say no DLC because it would be impossible with the nature of the procedurally generated universe?

Ok, so this HAS to be an intentional homage..

Sound it out.. "Vy'keen"... "Viking"

Viking's in Skyrim with Dragonborn/shouts.

Figured Hello Games would throw in a Fus-Roh-Dah reference some how.

Several other Indie games did this as well.

I like the sound of all of this, but, didn't they say no DLC because it would be impossible with the nature of the procedurally generated universe?

I think add-ons and future updates that add content to the game could still work as long as they don't mess with the procedural generated formulas.

For example pre-order bonuses already contain codes for special ships for starting players. So clearly they can have some kind of add-ons like this that don't throw their math formulas into complete chaos.

Anyone think of any good naming conventions to use? I've been rewatching TNG and thinking about how simple that system is (naming the star - eg. Ceti Alpha - and then just numbering each planet starting from closest to the sun - eg. Ceti Alpha I, Ceti Alpha II, etc).

I'll be going for the most influential fictional characters in human history.

Eteocles, Xerxes, Oedipus, Clerk, Iago, Ahab, Ishmael, Marlow, Bloom, Daedelus, Smith (maybe Winston would be better...), Dalloway, Holden, etc, etc.

Guess I'm missing

.

Try and match the planet's temperament to the name/character.

Weeeell, like I said in a post above some scientists are claiming that HG stole their formula to create their world, or at the very least used it without permission (the formula has been published si it's common knowledge, but its use is patented).

I would find the link, but I'm on mobile.

Since the sheer size of the universe is this game major claim to fame, the fact that they stole the math that makes it possible doesn't bode well for their creative vision going forward.

That article itself debunked what those scientists claimed. Those people have never even seen the No Man's Sky code. There was no basis for that claim.

I really hope we can disable the scanlines and chromatic aberration that are going on. They look nice in the promo material but if they are always on, all the time.... not so much.

Someone from Reddit suggested a particular naming convention and someone else made it into an interactive converter, found here: http://codepen.io/spAnser/full/wWmQGp/

It could be a good place to start.

Why haven't they shown this stuff before? It's weird how they just always showed him landing and walking around. This here makes the game seem much deeper already.

There's some new menus being shown here and such but they've shown alot of what's being seen Now especially in the ign first videos.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
I am terrified of how much time I am going to want to spend in this game. This looks amazing.

Well I guess I should admit that I haven't seen everything but the big stage stuff was always the same.

The "what do you do in the game"-meme exists for a reason

Because the game is deeply rooted in exploration and discovery, and the creator wants people to go out and explore and find this out on your own. He wants you to discover things on your own, rather than being told everything straight away which is the case for many games today.

I know I am immensely hyped and could be too hyped for my own good, but I can imagine a scenario where the game just instantly explodes with popularity when people are discovering and sharing everything they have learnt with the game, rather than just finding out about it in the usual marketing sense of trailers and gameplay videos. So I'm imaging many things like outpost building like I've mentioned above in this page or perhaps even owning and/or upgrading capital ships; things like that.

Basically they're super cautious about over promising after seeing how much hype has built up surrounding this game. They've talked about trading since the earliest interviews, but it probably hasn't been much to look at until very recently. They did the same thing with NPCs.....they didn't talk about NPCs until they were ready to be shown.

I could use your help. I am trying to compile a list of 100 planet names. As one of my main goals for NMS is to name 100 individual planets. Currently up to 64.

Each planet has a Suffix of GAF i.e Epsilon GAF.
Planets names are separated in different categories of 12 each. Which are various things, specific colors, gemstones, zodiacs, special numerics, and currently real world cities.

So right now I'm trying to compile a list of 12 famous real world city names which would bring up my name list up to 72.

So far I got
061) Philadelphia GAF (Gotta represent my home town)
062) London
063) Tokyo
064) Amsterdam

That is all I got so far.

Coming up with 3 other categories will be a hassle of it's own.

Here's my compiled list so far -

Well but they're showing it now. They could've shown it earlier is what I'm saying.

Because whilst it partially goes against Murray's philosophy of letting the player discover everything, it still is part of traditional marketing of drip-feeding information. There's still a lot to be known it seems, and it gets everyone talking about the new information, flicking through frames of the video to find potentially new tidbits. If you check the Reddit page, there's plenty of new threads each with a new small thing they're discussing in length.

I can promise you there's going to be some big stuff that they've not discussed at all in the launch game and players will have to discover it on their own. Murray still wants a lot to be unknown to the player and small hints/reveals here still offers the reward of discovery when we finally play it and still lends itself to traditional marketing release.

[I hope this isn't too rambly]

Hey! Yeah, lived here my whole life, but various parts of the city, mainly in the Northeast such as Parkwood and Pennypack, still live in that general area.

I actually did a search for "Philadelphia" and "Philly" on GAF once, didn't find a community thread for Philly GAF members, but it's nice to know some folks I regularly see on the forums are also surprisingly from Philadelphia.

You are also in KOF XIV threads, right? I've seen you post in NMS threads too.

I'll be naming some of my planets after many Shogun and Daimyo.

And some lesser known Canadian places like "Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump"

Yeah, temporary survival pods seem reasonable, something just large enough for one person that has a few hours of power. I remember a video where Sean sleeps in front of an artifact that speeds up time (like Big Boss' phantom cigar), and it seemed a bit silly with all the dangerous animals around. I guess the only question would be how you would carry around this person-sized pod with you – I haven't seen anything where you can craft something large out of thin air.

BTW, I disagree that the core of the game is survival (in the sense of surviving planetary ecosystems). People that choose to be space traders or a pirate never have to land on a planet at all. Survival is just one of the tentpoles – survival, trade, combat – on which players can hang their gameplay hat and advance in the game. I could make a ton of money trading, buy the best equipment, and jaunt down to planets for a quick sightseeing trip and laugh at the scavengers... I mean survivalists rummaging around for resources. ;)

Yea I'm the noob always asking questions in kof threads lol it's my second self owned fighter(after SFv) so I'm pretty new to the genre.

Now I gotta name a planet Omega(philly) it's only right

Still gotta survive in space though. I mean sure being a Pirate and Space Trader is one thing, but they still suffer attacks from other AI Pirates or attacks from other parties.

Well if your a space pirate you still have to worry about fuel(survival), the resources you need to be able to handle yourself(survival), if your attacking other ships you have the sentinels on your back(survival) other fighter ships(survival) etc

That's why I specifically said survival in terms of planetary ecosystems. Long Dark stuff. I don't expect to see space combat in Hello's "Survive" trailer. Otherwise you could say most every game is about survival.

Yeah, I've been playing KOF series for years.

Unfortunately all of the local Arcade scene in Philly died down a bit.

Years ago up at the Roosevelt Mall used to be a place called Champions Arcade, they had KOF97 and 98 machine, there is also University Pinball down on Spruce St. but I stopped going there because it being a bit out of the way and too many fights breaking out.

I'm lucky if I attend NEC each year. Used to go regularly but my reflexes aren't nearly as good to play competitively anymore, so I mainly in it for the love of the genre now.

If I remember correctly, Sean said in an interview that they wouldn't add more traditional multiplayer elements until the game was out and even then it was only if the people want it.

All I really want is for it to become easier to meet up with people maybe form a guild and that's it. No menus for friends no nothing, just you and your buddies coordinating.

I'm calling it now if possible for the team the first update will be invite to play with a friend. They'll warp to you somehow but only if they can figure it out and if it's even feasible. Otherwise they'll find away to make it at least easier to find people. Multiplayer questions are the ones that always come up I'm sure they noticed

GAF Guild would definitely be appealing.

It would be kind of cool if the intergalactic map highlighted all of the members of a guild in specific color.

But we'll just have to wait and see what the post-release support does for this game.

"There is this thing, which I'm not going to talk about now; that is a plan for multiplayer, and for people to have a more traditional multiplayer experience within the game. That's something that we'll deal with further down the line, that is exciting. But that is not what's core to the game right now. We have a laser-sharp focus on what we're going to ship with, basically."
-Sean Murray

It'll come eventually.

Its like the number one thing people talk about with this game.

I wouldn't like for it to just be to load into another's area. I feel like that should only be possible if the player has progressed far enough where they have upgraded their ship to warp drive long distances.

Yeah a guild/ faction/ clan system would be ideal
