This has to be trolling. ROM Hack? This is a brand new fucking 2D Sonic done in the style of what Sonic might look like now if the 3D generation hadn't come along. It's basically the Shovel Knight of Sonic games. This game looks better than any Sonic game from the last 17 years. Which is also almost as much time as it's been since Sega actually put effort into a Sonic game.

This is the Sonic game Sonic deserves.

You'll get your shitty 3D "modern" Sonic game. Just calm your horses.

Meh, a new game based on the 2D segments from Generations would have been much more exciting. If it wasn't for a a couple of animations I could swear this was some bootleg Genesis game. Looks like shit and Sonic's gameplay on the Genesis was always garbage.

That looks tremendous.

I must admit, I'm struggling a bit with modern Sega seemingly actually understanding the essence of one of their properties like this.

Another poor soul who never made it to Lava Reef zone I see.

if by "rom hack" you mean "brand new 2d sonic game built from the ground up on a modern engine with new art and new mechanics and new levels and tons of shit that would never have been possible on the genesis" then yes it's a rom hack

It looks like it could have been possible on the 32X to me. Or at least most of it does.

I mean it's obviously not actually a rom hack but it's closer to a rom hack than something like Sonic Advance, IMO. That's not really a bad thing though, I wish more companies would do this sort of thing after MM9.

I loved everything I saw in this trailer. As someone that grew up with the Genesis Sonic games, this put a big smile on my face.

That's the idea from what I heard on the stream earlier, this game is using Retro Engine but designed as if it's running on an overclocked 32X to feel like it's a natural progression to the classic games.

Yeah, same here.

It kinda reminds me of what M2 did with the remake of Fantasy Zone II, where they remade that as if it were a System 16 game (Even going so far as to actually develop the game on said arcade board)

So pretty much like Fantasy Zone II DX, then! Excellent.

It looks like too much for 32X, but the art style of Studiopolis Zone is VERY Knuckles Chaotix (which I'm not a fan of).

Nope, Sonic looked best in the Advance trilogy.

I'm glad for those who wanted this kind of thing, but this isn't exactly what I wanted out of a big anniversary celebration. Looks like a high quality fangame, which certainly exist. A perfected Generations 2 would've been amazing to me.

A 3D sonic game is still being announced. For all we know it could be Generations 2.

This is a fan game (Granted it's certainly one fo the better looking ones, maybe even the best.) so that's probably why you feel that way.

This thread proves how haed Sega has it when it comes to please people haha.

But I'm hoping they run a 3d series and a 2d series side by side, almost everyone is happy then!

Batteries the CRISIS!
I've been waiting for this game since 1995. I'm so glad they greenlighted this. The animations are so smooth, I love it.

Speaking of the Advance trilogy, how the hell did Dimps fall from grace that badly? Advance 1 was terrific and even had accurate physics, 2 was good, 3 was gimmicky but alright, the Rush games were fun if a bit shallow (and introduced Blaze, who is pretty much my favourite Sonic character), but then Sonic 4 came along and holy shit that was a dumpster fire.

This was a surprise side game, not even the main game which is still yet to be announced.

Wait, so is a modern game coming too? Is that a confirmed thing? I wasn't able to watch the stream. If not, I'm totally good with Mania, but that would be awesome.

It's not a goddamned fan game, it's an officially published SEGA game made by an independent developer. Jesus H. Christ.

On stream Aaron Webber said that modern Sonic fans should expect something later tonight.

By that logic Street Fighter X Mega Man is not a fan game.

I wouldn't mind a physical copy, but now I'm just day dreaming, right?

They could probably do it if they priced it as a budget title. This generation's been a lot better about digital products getting physical releases somewhere down the line. (Megaman Legacy Collection, Shovel Knight, Azure Striker Gunvolt, etc.) I could see them doing it.
