New key visual

I know I'm a few pages behind (again), but God this looks so weird and out of place. In fact Luna has been such an afterthought in marketing materials thus far that just seeing her take center stage in the game doesn't seem right.

Am I the only who doesn't care in the slightest about her? Right now, I literally care more about Iris than I do about Luna. I'm actually hoping that she doesn't play any important role in the story and the "let's find Luna" arc gets replaced by something unrelated to her early on and then they just forget about her altogether. (not gonna happen I know)

I think it was mistake by SE to hold onto her anime episode. Even Kingsglaive wasn't really about her and didn't show much of her character to us, so the anime might've helped us get more familiar with her and actually care about her. But as is, she feels more like a burden and a damsel distress than an actual character.

On the other hand, I can't give two shits about Iris, but I'm excited to see Luna.

Serious question, why? We haven't seen much of her so I'm genuinely wondering why are you excited about meeting her? Is it because of (Kingsglaive spoiler)
the ring
? If so, then I'm excited to see Noct reach that as well. But Luna herself? Nah.

Well, we are talking about a girl who is traveling the world, apparently alone (Or with Gentiana), talking with the gods and apparently taking no shit from them, and trying to protect and guide the male protagonist (When it's usually the other way around).

X was a better XIII. I am saying it despite the fact that I loved X.

Although seems like he is not a fan of classic games which explains why he loved 7 to 9 but not 4 and 6.
I think 10 is really good. It was just a slight step down from the PS1 trilogy so I don't tend to call it great. It's still one of my favourite games of all time. I can see why you'd make that comparison to 13, a game I really dislike, but I would say the key difference is in pacing. And that is something very important to me with any game. It can pretty much sour me on a game by itself, and that's why I was disappointed with FF12 or more recently MGS5 for example.

As for 4 and 6, I played those two decades after they were released, and while I appreciate they were probably quite impressive when they released, they really don't hold up well at all. I'm sure someone who hasn't played FF7, FF8, or FF9 before, and played them for the first time today could make similar comments about them, but I'd find that understandable.

Anyway, I'm kind of surprised someone caught that edit, but it doesn't really matter. I was planning on sharing my thoughts properly in the next week anyway, but I need a few days to let them settle.

While that sounds interesting in theory, her constant lack of presence makes a lot of those points weightless to me. Also, I genuinely can't understand her desire to protect and care for Noct to the extent that she does. Going by Kingsglaive backstory
they saw each other 12 years ago when they were 8, and only spent a few days with one another
. Falling in love in that age and those circumstance and then carrying that love for more than a decade is something that I just can't relate to.

I must say, my thoughts on the FF series coincide exactly with what you wrote in the other thread, except I've played V and not IV.

Dirty tease >:-(

VI is my perennial favorite, but it does need some gameplay updates.

It's still the first game I played that really made me feel I was going on an epic journey, and having had the unmediated experience on release it's evergreen for me.

Great. I can't wait to hear what you have to say about the game :D

Personally speaking, I absolutely loved IV because it had such a great narrative. VI though, it never clicked with me =/

X is also one of my favorite and story wise, it is leagues above XIII. But it had its fair share of linearity issues hence I compared it to XIIII.

Well, for starters, Noctis and Luna have known each other since they were babies. The nickname "Luna" comes from Noctis being unable to pronounce "Lunafreya" as a toddler.

From the trailers and gameplay segments I've never felt Luna has a lack of presence. Actually, the game seems to acknowledge at every turn. You might be unable to reach her physically, but it seems the game keeps reminding you that Luna is on her own, dangerous journey, and is preparing the way for Noctis, or guiding him. Luna seems to have a massive resolve, confidence and security to her.

People love to point out that she gets "slapped", as if that made her weak. We also get Noctis get captured, and even threatened with a sword to his neck. This doesn't make him a weak character.

I'm eager to see what her full journey is like.

Time to look for some streams of a party fighting a mid game hunt or boss that are balanced levels.

tumblr_inline_ntjq9fIfQT1qk1op9_500.gif

No zombie fights with deathga into revive. I hope it's good. Also I hope the camera gets better.

Game is being streamed(full game obviously)

https://www.twitch.tv/oldraiden951

This is the beginning of the game so, no spoiler for people here I guess.

I'm gonna watch it to see if they actually removed stuff from the demo or not.

Oh thank you!

Really? I think the combat is the star of the show here.

IThey made a system that is not a direct input action game that relies on finger dexterity (like Bayonetta), but rather mental dexterity. You are quickly making decisions quickly and the visual action looks like Bayonetta, but it isn't placing the same burden on you to respond with complex and rapid button presses. The benefit of this is that should free you up to think more about high-level strategy rather than quick reflexes. It's what tilts it toward being RPG rather than button mashing.

I'm loving the combat, anyway. Actually it's the main thing I'm excited for at this late moment before release, because I've reached the point where I'm not that convinced the story or environment will be the second coming.
I completely disagree about any sort of mental dexterity being shown in any of the available demoes. I have seen zero high level strategy being shown off in any game footage from any source outside of spreading out team attacks. The only thing I have seen resembling any sort of strategy is managing the mana bar which is like making a Souls game where the only strategy in combat came from looking at the stamina bar and large flashing parry prompts.

There are plenty of better examples of simple attack controls in action games that still feeling responsive and allow for complexity.
-Smash Bros.
-DmC
-Nero in DMC4
-Darksiders
-God of War
-Kingdom Hearts
-Ys
-Souls

Point is FFXV attempted to develop a "simple control scheme" that completely ignored tons of very good games that had also had simple control schemes, and they didn't add enough "strategy" elements to excuse it.

What is high level strategy? Strategies used at a high level? This demo only lets you use a few things so whatever people are going to do in combat at a high/late game level is not testable.

Only saw a bit since its only stuff that was in judgment (and I don't wanna see more :p)

Camera does indeed seem better in closed spaces. Still not what I'd consider perfect, but seems much better than Judgment. I'd need to play on my own to really make a judgment (lol) on that though

How many nodes have you unlocked in the Ascension grid that allow the party members to do more than just their basic attacks? Like, there's a simple example of Ignis getting enhance that gives Noctis the elemental status effect that's weak against the other enemy, and you can use that to deal higher DPS to the enemies. Ignis also has Libra that allows you to know the elemental weakness/resistances and you can then decide to use weapons with that status effect to deal greater damage.

Ignis has another ability that draws all of his allies to him and heals them, which is useful when you want to use Magic and avoid your party members being affected by the AoE.

Another simple example would be Prompto using the Gravity like attack to draw all of the enemies into one spot, which frees up one of your weapons slots to not needing that specific weapon, and then using Gladio's slow, but powerful Tempest attack to deal damage to everybody at once since they're rounded up.

People who've spent time messing around with the Ascension grid are doing some pretty strategic stuff, and this is only with the first handful of weapons. So, I wonder if you've tried any of this stuff up on your own or even look for it in the internet (like I have). If you're playing this casually, a lot of this may come down to you not knowing Japanese.

Personally I've noticed that the combat seems like what you would get if you had a strategy RPG, made it so you only control 1 character, have it in real time, and give you full control.

Its much much more about positioning, understanding what your current battlezone has (i do wish that they would make warp-points outside the battlezone inactive since that might trip people up), and also about how close you are to the edge of the battle zones.

Its about which weapons to use, what combo of weapons to switch to (i mostly use lances, but use gun and greatsword occasionally. This will probably change with analyse and libra), and knowing which ally ability to use and when. I also find that getting link-strikes isn't as random as many might imagine. Its quite consistent.

So, yeah. I think of it as active time strategy with an action tinge. You're doing (admitting not as complex) Srpg thinking in Arpg time. In something like KH or KH2, you really don't have to worry much about positioning or your allies with the exception of a few enemy types just to switch things up, but with FF15 you do it a LOT.

I honestly think wait mode will show a lot of people just how much strategy RPG is in here :p

huh... odd. it did seem better though :S People in the chat seemed to notice too.

I don't really agree with any of your examples, but you have to keep in mind that there's a whole skill tree that opens the combat up further. I haven't looked into the entire thing, but even air-dodge adds a whole lot to the picture.

I actually would compare this game to Smash Bros in a way.

Because the main attacks are on one button, and you can vary these attacks with directional inputs, and what these different moves do depends on the weapon.

I already wrote mini-guides about two of them, and someone's putting up youtube videos on what each weapon can do.

Maybe its just because of the motion but the hair looks less dithered to me. If this isn't the pro version then Im more than satisfied with how the game looks.

The first part is interesting. Didn't know about that. Still having problem relating to 8 year olds falling in love with each and then nourishing that love for 12 years though.

What you said might work for you or other people but I don't think it would for me. It's the same problem that I had with Mundus and Vergil and many other characters in DmC. Supposedly they are doing lots of things behind the scenes but since you don't see any of it, they just fall flat on their faces as important characters. I fear that Luna's character might suffer the same fate in XV.

I think the reason that her character felt weak after that slap is because of the fact that we've never seen her be a powerful person. This is exactly why you won't feel the same way about Noctis even when he is captured or beaten down. You've seen and experienced Noctis's powers first hand so you know and feel how powerful he is. But with Luna you've barely seen her and then when she does appear in trailers, she is being slapped, held at gun point, getting beaten down or even
die
in the recent Omen trailer.

Then we have the Kingsglaive that not only didn't help to empower her character, but it pretty much did the exact opposite and made her look even more weak. She needed to
be saved and then protected by more than one person to survive the events of the movie.

So, I don't think you can really fault people (including me), in thinking that Luna is a weak character who constantly needs to rely on other people in order to survive.

I don't know. I don't really associate "strong" characters with physical prowess. Luna seems to have an immense determination. I have never seen her sobbing or feeling insecure (Like Yuna does at one point during FFX, and she has to be comforted by the male main character).

Luna seems like someone who simply does what she thinks its right, and basically nothing can stop her. She's not sobbing or feeling bad about her fortune, or going angsty. I perceive a pretty big strength from her character.

I hope she delivers.

hmm I will check some of this out. I hope you are correct because as of now, just simply attacking doesn't feel great.

Look at these.

Sword

Spear

and my shit guide for daggers;

Also I figured I'd post the dagger stuff I found.

Daggers----------

O - Your basic bread and butter combo. Does a lot of hits and attacks fairly fast. Last attack is a crush I believe.

Delay O - after stepping back move in for a cross slash, counts as a crush attack.

Forward O - Forward thrusting attack with both daggers. This is good for closing the distance if an enemy has moved outside of your attack range during a combo.

Side O - This is probably what makes the daggers really good for offensive evading, even more so than the one handed sword's backflip because it's so fast. By holding left or right you will do a quick dash around the enemy in that direction, thing is is that these short dashes can be chained together, allowing you to quickly reposition and flank an enemy mid combo. It also has iframes so it can be used to avoid attacks and keep up your assault. After evading attack again for a crush attack and then follow up with a normal combo.

Back O - Step back while throwing both your daggers at the enemy. This attack seems to have iframes but the timing is a little bit more strict. Follow up with forward O to get back in.

Aerial O - a descending flurry of attacks. The hits come out faster than your ground combo and since you fall while doing it you can immediately chain it into a ground combo when you land.

Warp Strike + O - First attack after a warp strike is a crush attack.

All in all the dagger is really good for getting in fast damage with the ability to evade and rapidly re position behind enemies. It's air game isn't that great but I guess that's when you probably want to switch over to something like the one handed sword.

Also

Also pro tip = if you find a secondary weapon for your party members give it to them. Ignis = Polearms, Gladio = Shields, Prompto = Machines.

The reason for this is that it gives them more attacks and they can now link their combos together. So you'll see things like Ignis do a flurry with his daggers then immediately transition into a spear combo without pausing. Same with Prompto doing stuff like shooting someone then immediately pulling out the Bio Blaster and smashing them.

I have yet to find a shield for Gladio so I don't know if it's in the demo.

Some techniques require your allies to have the appropriate weapon equipped, like giving Prompto the Bioblaster will allow him to use Gravisphere if you unlock it with AP.

Yep, I believe she will be a better character. At least Luna doesn't have this boring, monotone, perpetually-stoic voice. (No offense to the voice actress, I'm talking about the material she was given).

Poorly written story.
Poorly written characters.
It's not the Witcher 3.
Bad graphics.
Conan doesn't like it.
I haven't been interested in a Final Fantasy since (choose a game).

Yep, I believe she will be a better character. At least Luna doesn't have this boring, monotone, perpetually-stoic voice. (No offense to the voice actress, I'm talking about the material she was given).

I wouldn't be surprised if Lightnings script read [Lightning is Cool, Tough, and Aloof] followed by her inane dialogue. Hard to salvage that.

In any case, if anyone is really invested in Luna you'l know the truth in hours now.
