New Horizon: AMD New ZEN CPU Preview Event

Intel CPU is like super saiyian blue goku always one upping and staying ahead of vegeta in power level.

AMD new CPU is like old super saiyain 2 trunks powering up past super saiyian blue beating up super saiyian rose black goku out the middle of no where. Transformations don't meant shyt no more that is if the gains they say they made are accurate.

I hope that clears it up.

Amazing, was trying to come up with an anology that involved Krillin or Yamcha but yours was simply amazing.

No, you won't have a 90W CPU in your console.

It scales as low power as Jaguar, at higher performance. 90W TDP is for the desktop 3.4GHz parts binned for clock speed, you could bin it for power appropriate for a console as well.

Really happy to see AMD becoming relevant again. Still want to see what's going on with Vega, but they've got some momentum and I'm happy for them.

The mindshare problem still exists, however. That'll be a tough one and something not won overnight.

Ryzen sounds pretty good based on the limited information provided in that presentation. It being able to outclass that $1100.00 GPU was interesting, but until we get actual benchmarks and a price for it, I will reserve full judgement. But even with that said, it sounds interesting and seems like it is going to be a good CPU which has been a long time coming. Hopefully it is priced well and we get some more competition between the 2 and better prices.

They said in the presentation I can download the video they transcoded in Handbrake. But I can't find it. Does maybe anyone have a link?

I'd love to see how my system compares.

These benchmarks bode well for advancements into Zen technology, especially AMD's specific Zen+(Plus) investment, which will likely be powering the semicustom CPU which makes its way into PS5.

It won't be binning, it will be a different product based on the architecture. You aren't going to get ~10W chips out of a lot that is designed to target 90W. Or even 65W.

Right, binning alongside lower clocks, smaller caches, differently tuned silicon processes etc etc, but point being for the same X watts it will perform better than Jaguar, so it would technically work in current console power draws better than Jaguar already does.

Question is on die size and if a console maker would pay it.

AMD is definitely working with both Sony and MS to optimize Zen in time for their next(or next next) console configruations

Seeing the info on Ryzen is making me way more enthusiastic about potentially switching over to AMD if I upgrade my CPU & mobo. Obviously, I'm going to be waiting on reviews and in-depth testing, but it's nice to have a choice that isn't "Just go Intel."

She said in the presentation that they worked with Sony on the PS4 and PS4 Pro and with MS on the Xbox One and S, she then had a separate slide saying they are currently working with MS on Project Scorpio.

It is aggressively clock gated, so future semi-customs will be very interesting 🙏

Well, that's true. Although it has no bearing on semicustom configurations being used before 2018

They show us a game running with no fps counter in whats probably a gpu limited scenario. Its just dumb

It's a fairly realistic scenario, at least. Comparing with a weak GPU at low settings would give a better indication of actual raw performance but ultimately doesn't represent the way anyone actually plays games.

AMD probably loses by a decent margin a pure CPU test, but their point is that they are close enough to be considered comparable, at an undisclosed but lower price.

All in all, very impressive CPU shown, the raw hardware specs are more than enough to indicate that AMD is ready for primetime. 8/16 cores/threads, 3.4GHz clock, 20MB cache, 95 Watt TDP. A boost clock that may very well touch 3.9-4.0GHz when it's fully unveiled is quite remarkable.

Keep in mind that IPC performance is where AMD has woefully fallen short for the past decade now. The specs offer little insight into that area, which is why people are disappointed that the presentation lacked hard data and some are sceptical about the "Spot the difference" demos that were featured instead.

Except that games being cpu limited even on intels fastest are becoming a thing in various games lately even at 1440p. FH3, WD2, BF one, gta V, total war etc

I will wait for the whole lineup but i liked what i saw. It will be up to pricing i guess... Also, dunno why but i liked the Ryzen symbol, i hope they use it for their sticker.

I'm saying the report is very likely bogus. We had only one source saying that, and even that source made articles about rumors of Zen making it into Scorpio.
The report is almost certainly not bogus. The source for the paraphrase of Ms. Su was ComputerBase, a very large and respected German tech site. It's quite unlikely that they invented the conversation (though they could have misinterpreted what she said).

Seems promising when they say it matches Intel 8 core, even if it is a handpicked test. And that they're exceeding the +40% IPC target. I really want 8 cores for my next CPU, and I'm finally updating by next spring from my 2500K. AMD, save me from another Intel 4 core product in 2017.

It is a bit disconcerting they have so little to show about Vega though, makes me think it's nowhere close to ready yet. Would be great for marketing if they had Zen+Vega systems ready for sale in Q1, but it seems like we won't see it before spring.

lol

She's literally on tape saying look for Zen in semi-custom 'beyond' 2017. Like, you can go and listen to it yourself.

Anyone expecting half the price of B-e or below is in Fantasy Land III.

There is a reason they kept comparing the 6700k, and 6900k and kept bringing up the 6900k price.

These are the desktop enthusiast line not the Naples server line.

Would u like to make a account bet :)

Zen in Scorpio isn't happening:

Have you given the new quote a listen? While Su was asked about the outlook AMD has on pursuing higher-end market segments within the custom/semi-custom business, she answered more generally:

I talked about our Zen roadmap for our products, in terms of desktops, servers and notebooks, but one should expect Zen in our semi-custom roadmap as well as we look beyond 2017 into the 18/19 timeframe, and so we really do view this as developing foundational IP that can go into a number of different markets and we have good prospects in those areas.

This, to me, clears up the small amount of uncertainty surrounding the similar comment she made earlier in the year, which Computer Base reported on -- Zen-based semi-custom anything isn't happening before 2018, not just configurations that pair Zen with a higher-end GPU.

The source of the above quote, which is a reiteration of what she said a few months ago, is the Credit Suisse financial conference held just two weeks ago. I used the audio recording of the Q&A to type out said quote myself -- it's not a regurgitation of something I'd read elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong: Zen in Scorpio would be great. But that dream is firmly and unequivocally dead.

I will say though, with Ryzen and VEGA, it looks like they might actually be legitimately trying to get back a lot of the desktop gaming market. It's been mostly consoles and laptops for the past several years, and if this does pan out, it could mean we're back to actually having more and better choices. That's better for us as consumers and better for the market.

For me, I currently have an i7-6700K, so I probably won't get a new CPU any time soon, but the VEGA, especially if it really comes out swinging against Nvidia products, then I may really pick one up.
