WUST happens here with every console device speculation, regardless of brand.

I wouldn't doubt Matt. He knew what the device was months before it was a rumour.

Not doubting him, but hasn't he been relatively positive about this machine? This seems to go against that.

Don't care about clock speeds, the games are all that matter.

Of course. But just so happens those clock speeds will get in the way of any games not from Nintendo or a select few Japanese third parties from appearing on the platform. And the others outside that stipulation will toss acouple scraps and call it a day.

As we've seen time and time again on Nintendo's systems...

While I wasn't expecting Boner level flops this is disappointing mainly in that holy fuck portable mode is low.

Bigger issue from the jump has been Nintendo's marketing as a console first. Wouldn't feel so bad for some if it wasn't marketed that way.

My biggest current issue outside of price unknowns is man that portable mode.

I wasn't expecting a ton of AAA 3rd party support, but I was hoping indies would latch on.

Makes me wonder how well certain indies would actually run on this thing. Some of the 3d games as of late like Firewatch and The Witness would probably chug at that power level even if they exactly graphics powerhouses.

If only it had 280x performance.

It's the CPU that's around 1ghz.

Also your 280X is better than either console lol :p. Also technically older than 3 years

LOL this is WAAAAAY weaker than a 280X. We WISH it had the performance of that 2013 part! It would be god like.

This LOW this is like 2008-2009 PC GPU low. But the CPU is even weaker.

Ohhh that were the CPU clocks I was looking at? My bad, just woke up.

But jeeeez though, 1GHz CPU seems terrible for a 2017 console

This was going to be 90% handheld for me. I'm not too thrilled to find out it's hobbled as much as it is, but it's still way more powerful than vita/ 3ds and I'll be able to play splatoon on the go. Hoping this puts us in a good price range.

I don't understand why people thought otherwise. Being able to do both only could have dragged console mode down, and being able to do both always meant a beefed up handheld rather than a true home console.

before this rumor worst scenarios were not great...but this bring rumor even worst than worst expected so far.

Well duh, this is Nintendo's new reality now. Has been for over a decade at this point.

Maybe it has some secret sauce to make up for the gimpyness? /s

Looks like native 1080p games might be out the window :(

But people need to remember that the Switch is primarily the 3DS successor, not a full on home console. It will still get ace Nintendo games and it will be fine!

By this point I thought most people would learn that you get a Nintendo console for it's exclusives that will, for sure, look great on the console because they know how to use it.

If you are so desperated for GRAFIX! go get a PC for your third party needs. Gaming after all is an expensive hobby, we all know that when we get into this.

So, will this thing be able to run something like say, SM3DW in 1080p at 60 fps?

No, it's primarily a home console, Nintendo said it themselves. Regardless of whether it was just standard PR or not, but they said "it's a home console first and foremost". We'll definitely get a true 3DS successor later on.

It's not so much that the performance increase when docked is big, it's more that the performance decrease when portable is big.

That said, at least the ratio makes a lot of sense for straightforward 720p -> 1080p scaling (which is probably what Nintendo games at least will do).
Yeah, that's more accurate.

In any case:

Handheld mode 3DS -> Switch is going to be a huge leap.

Docked mode Wii U -> Switch not as big a leap as some were hoping, but it will have a much more steady stream of software, which was the biggest issue Wii U had anyway.

This thing is shaping up to be Wii U 2.0. It'll get the worst versions of multiplats if it's lucky enough to get them at all. All as a result of design compromises made in order for Nintendo's wacky gimmick.

This could actually be far worse than Wii U because it has the potential to take down their handheld business as well. It's hard to imagine people going from 3DS to this big ass tablet thing with attachable controllers.

Oh well, we'll see. But everything I have seen so far is a disappointment.

If true then the Switch is pretty much what I expected. It's not a powerful console for running modern western blockbuster games. It's an unusually powerful handheld mostly for running mid-to-low-budget Japanese games.

People seem to have taken the fact that it plays Skyrim and ran with it, but original Skyrim is not a demanding game at all. It ran on last-gen consoles. It probably could have run on the Wii U.

I think some of the backlash was because we had supposed "insiders" on the board (Matt, NateDrake, et al.) saying otherwise. I think that isn't unreasonable.

For the record, none of these insiders have said anything all that specific about specs or clock speeds.

Matt said that third party ports will not be technical problems, which can still be the case as games are very scaleable. OsirisBlack said pretty much the same thing, that the Switch can get PS4 ports without too much of a problem.

Nate said Pascal architecture, which might be half true if they do go with a 16nm Maxwell chip.

LCGeek said CPU was >>> PS4/XB1 which may still be true if you're looking at CPU cores without knowing clock speed/amount.

I don't think anyone else said anything about power.

So, is it closer to WiiU or Xbox One?

What can we expect in terms of 3rd party AAA titles support?

If these specs are to be believed, and devs will target handheld mode for acceptable performance as I doubt that Nintendo will allow for dock only games, that would leave it closer to the wii-u end of the spectrum, but with a lot more ram and a more modern hardware setup supported by middleware, making ports a lot easier.

where are the GPU GF calcs coming from?

I'm seeing 256 cores @ 768/307.2MHz

So why would this not be 393.2GF/196.6GF?

A little disappointing but not surprising. I don't know who is still buying Nintendo hardware for multiplats.

Like the 3DS?

It's not going to be playing call of duty black ops 6 but the 3DS had plenty of third party support.

HAD plenty of third party support

nowadays even the 3ds release list it's almost completely made by nintendo games or co-published by nintendo and some other publisher like square

the support for pure mobile games is fading with smartphones being the main focus

Lower clocks than current NVIDIA Shield TV in "dock mode" is incredibly disappointing. Why even? That thing is silent even under game load and the form factor isn't that much different.

Way to kill my excitement. If the presentation in January doesn't feature MH, this thing is dead to me for the first year.

a bit underwhelming if I'm being honest but a nice baseline for them to improve upon with future iterations, which are inevitable

my hope is that they'll offer a dock with performance enhancements that works with the base Switch handheld as opposed to having everything be new. then I can have the upgraded dock on my main tv and move the other dock to a different room.

And yet Mario will run at 60fps locked and will look better than many many PS4 games.

I don't think anyone would question that Nintendo would be able to work their magic. I mean, look at the Wii U.

Yeah Im totally satisfied now I picked up a ps4 in the recent sales

Was really gonna wait for the switch, I thought the docked mode would be a ps4 and portable downgraded to 540p/720p lowest settings but in the end thought Nintendo gonna Nintendo aaand yeah

These specs and then just first party games that stays at 50$ for years, nope I Will not come back to you Nintendo after all these years (nes,snes,n64,gc,Wii) sure it Will be covered in many many first party games but I cant see how they would port new third party games with the recent development (games run poor on ps4, good on pro)

As for DQ11 I remember SE guy hinting they must make third version (well, kinda) for upcoming Nintendo machine (at Famitsu interview like few month ago). I guess they meant they're trying figure out the way to trim down PS4 version (like poly counts, assets and such) so it fits into Switch.

Going handheld-only has made sense since the DS/Wii gen as they've gave up playing a part in the specs wars back then.
It made the least sense then because with two successful systems they managed to sell 250 million units of hardware about 1.8 billion of software in a generation.

Disappointing, couldn't they have sold the thing at a loss to get that sweet third-party support early on?

Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo's entire business is games. They do not have the much wiggle room.

Not to mention, third party support is almost certainly a lost cause at this point.

Few Nintendo machines have been cutting edge, and their most successful have not been. They don't need it to make the best games out there. I don't mind at all whats inside the Switch, the concept excites me, and i'll always be in for more Nintendo games.
