WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is ending the "wet foot, dry foot" policy that granted residency to Cubans who arrived in the United States without visas.

That's according to a senior administration official, who said the policy change was effective immediately.

The official said the U.S. and Cuba have spent several months negotiating the change, including an agreement from Cuba to allow those turned away from the U.S. to return.

Good. If they are seeking political asylum now, it's a scam.

If Cuba is trying to better itself then this is a positive thing. No need for the political asylum routine when you can apply to get into the US after. I know its gonna be harder now wiith Trump in the seat but we'll see.

I had to think about it a little bit, 'Why fuck them'? And then I thought 'Oh yeah that's why'.

Why so? I mean I have no good regards for them because of the ones I've met they've been hypocritical on the policy extending to others but im curious if I'm missing another reason why.

If the goal is normalizing relations between the two countries then it's a great thing. Also, Florida's Cuban community can go fuck itself.

I hope they stop feeling superior to other immigrants now and start paying attention to immigrant issues as something that actually affects them now because well it does now.

Yeah maybe I've not been paying attention but why fuck Floridian Cubans in particular?

I never truly understood why republicans heavily supported this policy. I guess they just like to stick it to a country they hate than care about the thousands of people who risk their lives through such outdated policies.

From the viewpoint of many recent immigrants, Cubans in Florida dip their toes into hypocrisy quite often in their politics. They're the fuck you got mine of the Hispanic community, or at least that's how a lot of Latinos, especially recent immigrants, tend to view them. It's a generalization, I know, and unfair to those who defy this trend. But you can find plenty of Cuban Americans that despair at the viewpoints of their close relations.

This will be spun into something bad for Obama.

I think the goal here is clear. It will force orange turds hand to re-implement it but at the same time he has promised to cancel Obama's immigration related executive orders.

This is what I like to see from democrats, playing the political game perfectly. Now we just have to see how good they are at sending the message.

Hmmmm not sure what I think about this.

It seems good, more or less. Presumably the deal they've reached means Cuba will not punish those trying to come to the US and we are not in an ethical predicament about sending them back to Cuba.

Yes. And their mascot is the water boy aka little Marco.

The Cuban community in Miami is not a monolith, ya know. The older ones who still hold a grudge, maybe.

As the son of Cuban immigrants living in Miami, I'm more than OK with this. It's been a long time coming, especially when you considered that we would turn away Haitians who were coming from a country that was often in much direr straits than Cuba. The policy was simply unfair and biased towards Cuban exiles.

That being said, holy shit is most of my family going to be mad. Probably a lot of my co-workers too.

And if someone like Rubio pushes hard against it, there's a chance that he'll be at odds with Trump and also have to explain why he was okay with endorsing a guy with such strict immigration policies.

I doubt anything will come of it in that way, but at least there's a chance.

Edit:
Even though he endorsed Trump, he also ran his entire Senate campaign on "I WILL STAND UP TO TRUMP!"

And here I thought he just kept his mouth shut. There goes my fantasy.

Call me crazy, but this could be interpreted as racist.

It could, but trust me it isn't. It's being pissed at the political nonsense machine that is the South Floridian Cuban Exiles. Half my family is this subset, and I love my tias, tios, abuelo and abuela, but *fuck* the politics.

The whole community? Maybe you shouldn't paint with such broad brushes?

Not the whole community. But an overwhelming majority of it.

Good. Cuban immigrants do not deserve preferential treatment over all other people fleeing third world poverty. This legislation was written to undermine a country that had the gall to reject American corporate dominance, and maintained because Cuban Americans generally vote Republican.

Funny enough, a lot of Cuban Americans support the idea of ending Wet Foot/Dry Foot. Some members of the initial wave of Cuban exiles looks down upon recent migrants, who tend to be poorer, browner, and more sympathetic to the Cuban government.

you can't put a price on sparks
Cubans who vote republican are hypocritical, so its only fair they get put on an even basis with other countries on Earth in regards to immigration. maybe they wont take their "special status" for granted since it wont exist anymore.

You pretty much nailed it more or less.

This is what I thought.
I've seen this sentiment other places, and whenever you called them out on it they just defaulted to the "CASTRO" defense. I guess with no more Castro and diplomatic talks resuming means theres no need for this anymore.

Like somebody else said I expect a hell of a lot of Cuban-Americans to be pissed af about this.

Im curious about how my non Cuban friends will feel about this...and I can't lie I have a Cuban friend I know voted for Trump that I know will blow a gasket at this and the petty in me is excited lol

This shit always pissed me off. Cuban touches land? Parade time. Haitians? They can gtfo. Like, what? The fuck is wrong with y'all?

"Fuck minorities who don't vote how I vote! I am an enlightened American, they don't know what's good for themselves!"

Jokes aside, don't think its fair to demonize an entire demographic like this.

I'm really curious about how Cubans split on Trump compared to other Hispanics. Like really, really curious. Something tells me they were really receptive to his wall and deportation rhetoric. Part of that fuck you got mine mentality usually bleeds into looking down on other Hispanics and trying to play Model Minorityball for the Republican Party.

Cuban Americans form a strong plurality in Miami politics and business. Because there's not much chance for them to lose power, Cuban American politicians will generally not oppose anti-Hispanic legislation brought forward under Trump.

I know some Cubans that have GC due to that, most of them were awesome hard working people.
It was bound to happen after our relations with Cuba softened.

most non-cuban immigrants are awesome hard working people too

I get why the rule existed but it is long past time to get rid of it. It's entirely unfair to every other asylum seeker or would-be immigrant

Cubans worst fear about normalized relations has come true, that they won't be special snowflakes anymore and now they too will be looked at incorrectly like other Spanish speaking peoples as "illegals" from Mexico.

trump will probably reverse this to win him some votes from the cuban community in 2020.

He probably will, but doing this will make his standing with non-Hispanic Cubans even worse. Reinstating this policy would be a blatant middle finger to all non-Cubans.

This will be seen as a purely political move as Cubans favor Republicans strongly.

It puts Trump is a tough spot. Piss off a loyal voting bloc by keeping it or destroying any chance of picking up non-Cuban Hispanics

He won't just to spite little Marco Rubio and that stunt he pulled at the Tillerson hearings. He's a vengeful motherfucker that Trump.
