Why do we hate Cuba again? Fidel is dead. The people are awesome and the cigars are amazing.

Plus his latest comments about Trump/Jared makes this look even more bad for him.
Kushner was a Democratic donor up until about two years or so ago. When was this pic taken?

Booker also was a fan of Jeff Sessions before he did that speech slamming Sessions.
No, he said some nice things about Sessions because they worked together in honoring Selma marchers. To my knowledge, at no point did Cory Booker say, "I am a fan of Jeff Sessions, his ideological views, and voting record."

Really? This guy is DOA if he runs for President. Please don't run. I won't vote for you.

Yea during the 2015 Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony for 1965 Voting Rights Marches Foot Soldiers, Booker said that working with Sessions on the commemoration was one of his career highlights and he was honored to work with Sessions on it.

If you are one of the 10 ever African-Americans elected to the U.S. Senate and you get the chance to honor the Selma march on its 50th anniversary, with a sitting senator from Alabama, I imagine you would find that to be a career highlight.

Their parents are all Cuban. What the fuck

Don't a lot of Cuban immigrants hate Cuba? iIRC some of the most vocal opponents to Obamas reversal were Cuban; and some supporters of course.

Isn't that common? I thought anti-Castro Cubans who fled here (and their families) were statistically likely to be harshly opposed to any kind of reconciliation

Many in the GOP are not for this.

Older Cuban exiles are for this. That demographic has shifted in recent years with younger Cubans wanting the embargo lifted.

Read up on Fulgencio Batista. Most Cuban folks who are against open relations with Cuba come from that base.

Wouldn't be surprised if Trump and his cronies start referring to him as the 44th President in an attempt to completely erase Obama.

A large percentage of Americans wanted this. If Americans want something else, they can bother to vote in battleground states. Otherwise, this, as in all branches of government going to GOP, was America telling the world that obama was a mistake and it is self correcting

I'd also be smart enough not to mention sessions by name cause he isn't worth mentioning by name.

What is the point of this?

Trump desperately needs to move the story away from Russia. Congress is in recess this week so the White House has to do it themselves. I could see his advisors having a brainstorming meeting for something they could roll out ASAP and deciding on this.

I feel sry for the US.... Having such a powerful nation regress like this is painful to see. Hope the people take the right lessons from it for future elections.
Don't worry, we won't.

The next Bush or Trump will always be around the corner as long as the republican party exists.

We'll probably get a democratic president in 2020 until the idiot public forgets the damage Trump did and falls for the next GOP candidate in 2024 or 2028.

With the way things have been going to shit here, I expect the next two decades to be a fun push and pull/game of musical chairs between the easily brainwashed and the sane half of the country.

Is he supposed to pretend he did it alone?

This is ridiculous. Is Bernie's stance on climate action disingenuous because he had the gall to say he gets along with James Inhofe (and in fact explicitly singled out Inhofe as a republican he enjoys working with)?

If these guys can get along to do something good every once in a while, we shouldn't shame them for doing so or expect them to pretend that the other party involved didn't even exist.

Fucking Rubio hyprocite on full display.
Well Rubio has always been opposed to Obama's Cuba policy.

I can't wait to listen to his supporter's rationalizations as to why wet foot dry foot is acceptable.
Because Castro is an easily accepted villain in America. My dad is pretty typically republican on immigration (and virtually everything else lol) but even he was appalled by Clinton sending Elian Gonzalez back.

I thought The Hill was predominantly viewed by right wingers, but the comments on that page... seem to indicate a very anti-Trump tone.

Back in January, Obama announced that an end to a policy that gave Cubans who reached the U.S. preferential treatment on immigration, also stating there would be an increase in cooperation with Cuba following an agreement on a number of issues including terrorism and human trafficking.

"Effective immediately, Cuban nationals who attempt to enter the United States illegally and do not qualify for humanitarian relief will be subject to removal," Obama said in January. "By taking this step, we are treating Cuban migrants the same way we treat migrants from other countries."

But his decision prompted ire from a number of Republicans including Diaz-Balart.

Speaking at the time of Obama’s decision, Diaz-Balart said: “With just eight days left in his administration, President Obama has found one more way to frustrate the democratic aspirations of the Cuban people and provide yet another shameful concession to the Castro regime.”

He is now hoping to see Trump reverse such policies, and appears to be confident the president will do so, telling the Daily Caller he was“1,000 percent sure the president is going to deliver on his commitment.”

So a reversal makes it easier for Cubans fleeing Cuba to get immigration status. Maybe this is not a bad thing.

They're a communist country that killed thousands of Americans during a long and arduous war. Oh wait that was Vietnam. No problems with them.

Didn't Cuba come out with a vaccine for lung cancer recently? Seems like it would be a good idea to not to antagonize the country which can potentially save American lives due to that breakthrough.

Why do we hate Cuba again? Fidel is dead. The people are awesome and the cigars are amazing.

Something something socialism, something something embargo on the enemy based on a half-a-century old mindset when engaging with Cuba, something something territory of the U.S. that suffered immensely under imperialist rule which, combined with an oppressive ruling local government, rebelled violently and began the long and complicated history of U.S.-Cuba relations (and really, most of the western world save for Canada when Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau went to Cuba and became friends with Fidel Castro).

How in the world did this thread end up about Cory Booker?

Future president's got to get in his two cents i.e. his remarks about Kushner.

For the record. I hope Warren or Harris runs so you folks down south don't have this blithering buffoon in office (Trump, not Booker).

I'd also be smart enough not to mention sessions by name cause he isn't worth mentioning by name.

Booker saying a nice thing about Sessions isn't even a top 10 reason why he's a shit bag.

Booker is a grade A example of why the two party system is broken.

Dude would put on a klan outfit before he supported real healthcare change that didn't involve lining the pockets of insurance companies. Clown and a cunt.

Edit: For people unsure of his Kushner connection.

Dude essentially got his pockets padded to keep his mouth shut about lil Jared.

This is ridiculous. Is Bernie's stance on climate action disingenuous because he had the gall to say he gets along with James Inhofe (and in fact explicitly singled out Inhofe as a republican he enjoys working with)?

I would have given Sessions the most minimal of gestures I could do. Shit I'd hire a writing staff whose main propose is to do just that, I'd take out a loan to finance it if necessary because that's all Sessions deserves. If it was legal to do so, I'd throw a damn brick at that little racist elf mid speech. I'd throw that shit at his face with the collective strength of the black community present, and past on some black panther shit.

And Bernie working with a Republican isn't anywhere near the same as any black representative having to swallow their pride and work with a man who is so damn racist that when he tried to run for judge racist ass Republicans during the time were like "you're too fucking racist my guy". If Sessions didn't get into politics he was probably going to be a Grand Wizard.

So no there is no "Oh we'll ignore his entire history of racial hatred, actions, and attempts at laws towards black people because he totes did this one thing in 2015. Fuck that noise, especially given the fact that Corretta Scott King (You know, the wife of MLK, the man who led the Selma protest?) wrote a letter expressing her and the collective black community's seething hatred for this man and everything he stands for by way of opposing his 1986 federal judge nomination.

Hey, a new trade partner from an old enemy is now going to become an ally. This is going be fantastic for both countries!

Would be a shamed if someone Putin it up

My family fled Cuba after the revolution. Well aware of the history and Cuban exiles would imply that base. As mentioned, that generation of hardliners is dying out. A plurality of younger and middle aged Cubans want 60 year old, ineffective Cold War policies gone. With good reason! Its done fuck all to the regime.

Even if you look past that, Cuba will simply look to Russia and China for trade and goods. Russia just shipped 250k barrels of oil to Cuba. This after cheap oil from Venezuela has disappeared thanks to the instability in that country. Russia is already talking about reopening its old military bases on the island and Cuba wants more oil as quickly as it can get it. Googles main competition to bring more internet services to Cuba? China/Huawei.

Strategically, it's fucking stupid to cede an island 90 miles off of the coast of Florida to two major global rivals.
