Phil Spencer: '2017 won't be Halo FPS/Gears led'

In all fairness, if Gravity Rush 2 or something were cancelled - it would be the same.

I think Gravity Rush has more cache and pedigree than Scalebound :)

Phil is in the hot seat, he knows that new IPs not only need to be launched, but it be successful.

Xbox cannot suffer any more misfires like QB or SSO (even if they don't own the IP).

I hope they make Ryse 2. *hides*

Sunset Overdrive is considered a misfire? By who? People who never played it? What Microsoft need to do is stop focusing on people who will never buy their console and actually try pandering to the people who do have one. That means making sequels to newer IP that people enjoyed playing, or IP that had potential.

Crackdown 3, Forza 7, and Sea of Thieves is a pretty good lineup for the end of the year for hardcore gamers, but I don't see any of those games appealing enough to the general audience to push Scorpio much.

That "FPS" qualifier :D

I see. Still big though.

Shame MS didn't think so or they might not have closed down Ensemble because they... uh... didn't want a Halo Wars 2?

Can't help but wonder how the guys who lost jobs at Ensemble back then must have felt when Halo Wars 2 was announced.

I would be so damned pumped for a quick MechAssault port in HD for this year with a new game announced for later

Keeping my expectations low after the Scalebound cancellation.

-Halo Wars 2
-Forza Motorsport 7
-Crackdown 3
-Sea of Thieves
-State of Decay 2

...would be a decent lineup, but I expect one of them to be delayed to 2018. Probably SoT or SoD2.

Toss in one or two smaller games and some VR projects and this is probably what we can expect from MS this year.

The Scalebound thread clocked in at 20 pages, the cancellation thread was at 100 pages...

The flak intensity was also an exercise on MS-shitting.

We will have some nice 3rd party Scorpio optimized stuff also in 2017, I think.
There is a reference to my flak statement that you should chuckle at if/when you get it

I agree in that the Scalebound cancellation has led to over reactions, but I made that statement because it's not just message boards but online articles overreacting and thus I don't think they were expecting this much negative pub over this cancellation

Just noticed. 3 of those games run on UE4.

After the shitshow that was Horizon 3, I really need a new Crimson Skies to continue caring about Microsoft.

Spoiler alert, this is likely the last year that I care about Microsoft.

Are you referring to the issues with the PC version? Outside of that I'm really not sure how you can say with a straight face that FH3 was a shit show.

I like how he had to specify Halo FPS

Well I mean we already know Halo Wars 2 is coming so he couldn't just outright say no Halo game. Maybe he could have said no mainline Halo game but it's his choice of words and they're accurate.

Guys okay I got it. Why doesn't MS make an Overwatch like game but with their first party characters. I mean everyone always says they can't make a Smash Bros like game, because they don't have enough fighting like characters, then create a game that requires shooters. Imagine Alan Wake vs Master Chief. Fuglore vs Marcus?

Come on guys am I the only one who would buy this game?

It's been hilarious/infuriating to see the consensus of GAF be that after Scalebound's cancelation, Microsoft has absolutely nothing on their 2017 dock.

Despite the fact at last E3, they made a focused effort to only announce & talk about titles coming out the following holiday. So, why wouldn't this year be the same game plan? They'll detail Crackdown, Phantom Dust, State of Decay, and Sea of Thieves - then announce a Forza and a few other games to round out the Fall season.

People are just desperate to see them fail.

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Doesn't he say "Halo/Gears-led"?

Doesn't that leave the possibility of either of those appearing, just not in a headline role (perhaps a tease).

LOL how can it be? I mean I'm all for more variety but they just released a Gears game and Halo I would think is in the middle of development.

I mean, when you claim their strategy will be "detailing" a remaster -- do you really not see an issue?

As of right now, they do have a very meager 2017 lineup for me. I'm not going to make myself feel betterby pretending that there are other unannounced games coming this year I haven't heard about and that I will like before even knowing what they are.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
It'll be interesting to see if Sea of Thieves sails or sinks. It's gaming as a service so microtransactions is the critical point. So it remains to be seen if it has better winds in its sales than Project Spark.

Concerning Crackdown, we'll see if that fares better than the likes of Ryse, Sunset and Quantum. Or if it'll meet the same fate. My guess is about the same. Which is hardly setting anything on fire.

As for HD ports and indies... if Microsoft is dependent on them to sell their console this far into the generation they're really in trouble.

I'm so glad that everytime Shu tweets or takes a breath there isn't a thread about it, this just simply sad that everytime this man tweets or some minor mundane run of the mill nothing of note was said interview was recorded there is a Thread about it. Thank god for Shu.

Assuming the studio is just as happy with more time on the title, I'm 100% ok with a longer wait for Halo 6. I say that as someone who still digs the series. Gears 4 seriously benefited from the downtime after Judgement.

This past year had some awesome indie-scale games that were totally off people's radars, which made it a great year on top of a set of really strong AAA games. I imagine that's not too hard a thing to continue, even with what we already know is in the pipe.

Is Hololens feasible now ? Can MIcrosoft be preparing some sort of Xbox Hololens?

Hololens is different device and will never matched with the xbox barnd. even though you can play games on it. right now the focus for hololens is on the commercial side. not so much consumer interest

Not Halo 6 / Gears led, so a Halo 6 Multiplayer Beta in December just in time for Scorpio... gotcha! But really, I'd love a MP Beta for Halo 6 at the end of this year.

I guess people don't care what Shu says.

I doubt we get a real beta again so long before release. Halo 5 MP was such a change that they really needed the feedback on all of it and if people liked it. I do think Halo 5 gets a Scorpio patch. Same as Gears and Horizon 3. Seems like a no brainer.

Well, I was expecting Halo 3 Anniversary by Saber or Certain Affinity.

Just a helpful point for anyone tempted to take hanspampel seriously, he believes in stupid racist bullshit.

We need 2-3 surprises MS!

Even if smaller budget games like Recore would be a gem.

Yea, for next year...I love having a good number of games but I don't like too much (especially packed in the holiday season) as I don't have enough time to play them all and spreading them out is better. Though you did say smaller budget games but I think Ori 2 would be a great game for that. So, I do agree with you in the end, just not big games...but that's my opinion.
