If this is true Im having a hard time thinking that Scorpio isnt more then a panic reaction to PS4 Pro and thats rje reason ut got announced so early.

Microsoft talked about Scorpio before Sony talked about PS4 Pro, so the logic there is flawed.

I don't think either machine is a response to the other, neither of these things could have been produced with short notice, there however is a level of techonological synchronity that has occured.

Don't know why people were expecting/wanting a new gen console.
Makes no sense.
Devs would have either have to make new versions of their games just for Scorpio and PS4 separately, and which would have the bigger install base? Couldnt see it working out that way.
It makes sense for them to both target the same timing for a new gen launch.

To be fair Scorpio was announced first but the Neo leaks/talk (late 2015) happened before Scorpio leaks/talk.

It is a tad weird that this is available on their Dev portal. They must of known this would of been picked up and ran with like this.

I figured earlier that they would be quite open about Scorpio and I guess we will see something official sooner than later. (This is just my personal opinion)

Is it just me or is Digital foundry to quick to post information with no bases or that is outdated and proceed to heavily speculate. Also to proceed to talk about speculation as fact until the very end of a video or article were they cutely step around the fact that it is speculation.

Also people using ps4 pro techniques being offered as a option to developers as any sort of confirmation of power, I will remind you that it has been clearly stated that developers can do what they want with the power. Giving developers these options only further proves that they support that idea and pointing out that developers can increase graphical effects only further cements it.

Comments recently from Shannon Loftis confirming first party titles will run at native 4k on scorpio shows that it is capable of running native 4k games, which would include a Forza motorsport running at 4k 60fps. They are just options to let developers use the power in the ways they see best. Instead of native 4k you could use checkboard and now you could also increase graphical effects as well, instead of using all the power to brute force a native 4k framebuffer.

Now how about we look at the most interesting thing in this hole article FRAMERATE UPSCALING!!! if that force unleashed demo is as impressive as they say it is, then i'am more excited about that then 4k.

Actually, Sony talk about more a powerful PS4 way back in 2015.

With this tidbit of info how much of a difference will we actually notice in comparison to the pro?

I get it, it has better hardware but "better" might not prove much visually aside from numbers given to us on what resolution it runs at.

Supersampled 1080p vs 4k rendering on these consoles should be very...Very similar right ? Almost hard to distinguish? I think if they allowed exclusives then this would be a much bigger issue.

XBO:S is approximately 40% more powerful than the PS4 Pro, about the same as the PS4 vs. the Xbox One.

Those differences have certainly been downplayed (1080p vs. 900p) earlier this generation so I expect you'll hear more of the same.

It is a tad weird that this is available on their Dev portal. They must of known this would of been picked up and ran with like this.

I think that was intentional. They have a competitor launching a new product in five weeks. Why not start leaking some info about your new system to steal some of that launch hype.

Not if you understand that corporate espionage exists.

I think it's highly likely that Microsoft got wind of the PS4 Pro just ahead of the games media, and that's why they brought up Project Scorpio well before anyone would have expected them to. It was a super half-assed introduction that is very abnormal for the industry.

The timeline makes absolute sense for Scorpio to be Microsoft's hasty reaction to learning about the PS4 Pro, apparently down even to somewhat similar specs for the two mid-cycle console upgrades.

Man, the way people complain about power it's almost as if gaming is the about having fun anymore...

Power, nice graphics, and fun, why cant we have it all ?

They are not mutually exclusive.

Can't they OC the CPU as much as possible if it gets a die shrink?

I assume thats what Sony did already with Pro and got 2.1 with Jaguar. Maybe MS will go further with a big ass cooler ?

So Scorpio will be just like the Pro, but checkerboard at higher resolutions/more often reach native 4K

By the time it releases, the Pro will surely be at $349. Seeing as Spencer once implied that Scorpio might cost more than $399, a $449 Scorpio wouldn't have enough of a visual difference to justify the $100 difference for most people (I imagine)

This project has been a complete waste of time and money for MS, IMO. Most people who care about higher resolutions likely own a gaming PC as well, but in the case of the PS4 Pro, they have plenty of exclusives to justify getting a Pro. What PC gamer in their right mind would buy a Scorpio when you can play almost every single game on PC?

Scorpio's target demographic is too small to justify its existence. It will likely be a flop.

Really interesting to see the number of people who think this is doomed on arrival. Xbox One had some lofty goals at launch, but at the very least it's outpacing Xbox 360. If Scorpio helps them continue to do so, I'd imagine Microsoft will consider this project a success.

Anyone who thought of this as a secret weapon for PS4-levels of sales needs to lower their expectations. Xbox is a platform now, rather than just a piece of hardware and I couldn't be happier with that approach. As a result, one could assume Microsoft's expectations are different.

thats the gpu difference isnt it ? scorpio seems to have faster ram and more available to games so even if its jaguar the difference is still bigger than xbone ps4

Yup.

People always struggle to accept a dose of reality once they've hyped themselves to hell and back though. Happened with the PS4Pro and the Switch recently too.

Are people expecting insanely powerful hardware on a new system a new thing or have I just not been on GAF long enough?

Not if you consider the 2010 leaked roadmap for Xbox 720, that said we would see iterative xboxes.

(Not saying that Sony copied too, but on ms side there's evidence that it was the plan all along)

Won't look too much different than a PS4 pro as far as graphics and it's pretty much doing the same thing. No exclusive titles. So people can stop hoping for that.

The implication that they got Forza 7 running at 4k with ~4.5TF of power and have an additional 1.5TF to play with is kind of cool. Wonder what they'll use it on.

Sparks, obviously.

I really hope there weren't people hoping for true exclusives for mid-gen refreshes that would sell to what, 2-5 million total gamers by the end of the year?

Let's just say AMD talked both into the idea of iterative consoles to get a steady stream of income. :p

It's not a new thing at all. People just seem to pin all their hopes and dreams onto a console even before it's officially announced.

Well *IF* true, a big let down. I was expecting a noticeable increase in performance-at least 1-2 times as powerful as a PS4 Pro.

I'm stuck deciding between an Xbox One S and PS4 Pro now.

It is going to easily be the most powerful console on the market and it is still being ragged on. Pretty telling.

To keep it in perspective, the PS4 was the most powerful console on the market until it was replaced by the PS4 Pro. Both the PS4 and the PS4 Pro received their share of "ragging on", I think you would agree.

Sony spoke of the Pro a long time before MS announced the Scorpio. They just called it a mid gen upgrade though.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has hinted that the Xbox One will receive hardware upgrades.

Sources: Sony Is Working On A ‘PlayStation 4.5’

Unless of course there are earlier documented rumors than what was talked about at GDC

See this is what I don't get.

If, as Sony intimates, this mid gen refresh is to prop up console performance against the ever increasing performance of PC hardware, do these half steps really change that in any dramatic way?

The money spent in R&D, manufacturing, shipping, promoting and supporting these new "Pro" versions that only a small percentage of the player base will purchase, and possibly pushing the release of entirely new consoles out by another year or two, mean that PC hardware and PC performance will continue to outpace consoles anyway.

The people who care about that and jumped ship last gen, will either not come back or jump ship again in the end.

Seems weird to me to go to these lengths for the continued support of a super niche group of console gamers that basically wants their console gaming to be more like PC gaming, except not PC gaming.

Yeah that justification always seemed stupid to me. All the pro does is let Sony sell a premium version at a higher margin while selling the original model at a lower margin using the same board revisions. It's about selling people a nicer version for more money not about keeping PC users who have better options anyway.

I dont get the logic- apparenty a 40% increase in power from the PS4 PRO...not even talking about the PS4 here...is not a substantial upgrade?

People are then citing Phil Spencer's point about wanting a considerably more powerful console as if that goes against the specs we are assuming here? How is that? How does 40% additional power from its competitor's UPGRADED console somehow not equal a more powerful console?

I think we have all been spoilt by the Zen rumours, hype and hyperbole over time.

Love these leaks tho. Its like 2013 all over again. Best times. :D
Except for the secret sauce and dGPU (because some can't believe the Durano specs being lower than Orbis specs) the leaks was really accurate... there is a site I guess... vgleaks.

But crackdown and sea of thieves will prob be less limited now..aka they would have performed poorly in the current XBO most likely. Wonder if they would patch Ryse: Son of Rome and give it as a free bee at release to help show off Scorpio power..
(everyone has prob played it by now) its overdue for being a games with gold offering

Putting my Sony credentials to one side:

It will more than likely sell to existing XB1 owners in the short term, just like the Pro has. But I think it will do better because the PS4 went from 'the most powerful' to 'even more powerful' and that's not as attractive as going from 'the weakest' to 'the most powerful'. This is an advantage MS has. Promoting that message any wider than the current XB1 community is going to be tough though.

Games are what will make the difference.
