Nintendo Switch Super Bowl Commercial

False comparison as people already carry their phones everywhere and that doesn't come with the "nerd" stigma that playing "actual" games does.

Like I said, I work at a large, urban university. People all over campus and all around the city were playing Pokemon. Where as even on campus seeing someone with a 3DS or Vita is a rare, once every few months occurrence. And it's stereotype reinforcing as it's some nerdy kid sitting playing by themselves with multiple groups of students socializing nearby.

Not saying it should be that way, but it is what it is and probably isn't going to get better with how hyper image concious millienials are.

dog everyone plays games now

the nerd stigma is dead

it's not like they're showing disgaea 5 in this thing

Good commercial...still not sure how big this will be but I am guessing in between Wii and WiiU success wise...casuals will make the difference.

Focus is important, ask Hillary. First get core gamers before thinking bigger.

I'll have to agree to disagree here. That lonely geek is the person most likely to buy the console on day one. The stuff in the extended ad shows software that won't be out on day one, which would cause confusion if aired during the Superbowl. I think they did a great job of catering to the "now" and the "later" crowd.

Guys...
I mean... come on..
You don't need me to tell you the sad truth that people interested in Zelda, and buying a console for it.. they already know about the switch right ? You know that right ?

Yeah you're right actually but i mean, that's true for the hardware part. People won't specially buy a hardware to play it. But it still proves, people can have fun outside and look silly or weird. It's not just a problem of device, that's what i wanted to say.

Thread is moving fast, but on the last page there was an article posted that said that the 30-second one is the one being aired.

That's an odd/poorer choice then. Definitely not their best foot forward, I don't think the Zelda spot is bad by any means, but it's objectively weaker as a first impression of the overall system and experience. If you're going to go big then go big.

They've definitely learned not to muddy the waters. The Switch is about switching from portable to console, front-and-center, the Joycon stuff is there for people who decide to look a bit further.

that's a great ad, both the 30 second one and the extended one

Nintendo is really hitting it out of the park with the marketing for the Switch. their sole misstep so far was at a thing that only the super hard core fans would have watched live.

The click at the end with the system and controller clicking together is advertising brilliance
Also that extended ad of

Mario
Splatoon
Zelda

Makes for killer launch Lineup. Especially since I'm gonna play some binding of Isaac on it directly as well

Really happy they're actually investing in ads this time around. Switch is coming 25-26 days after the commercial airs so it's very soon. Hopefully it helps out

Interesting that they show it as a handheld first and console second. Basically, as a handheld with a TV output dock. Which is the exact opposite of the original reveal.

Didn't like the extended one until the end. Thought the 30 second one is good for the super bowl. Both aren't as good as the initial video though

Well, it started off with a guy just waking up. That's just showing practicality.

I dunno, the extended version doubles down on the motion stuff which I'm not sure interests or excites anyone anymore...the 30 second version is pretty good though.

Zelda looks amazing, can't wait. Have to say, though, that the extended version is just so... unrealistic. No one is going to play games in 99% of those situations, and I feel like motion controls were 5 years ago. I feel like if these are the selling points they want to push, they are not speaking to a lot of people.

Tell that to go pro.

Great ad. I like this one more than the UK one that was released earier today, even though I like that one as well.

Mabye I'm out of touch because most of those situations didn't look that far off to me this time.

Zelda is going to have like a 90% attach rate for the first couple months.

Knowing it exists is a thing. Being enticed to buy it, during the Suberbowl frenzy is another.

I don't like the 30 second spot...it shows the stereotype of the lazy gamer too much that's not really a good representation of the console.

The 2 minute commercial is much better though.

Man. Every time I show anybody 1-2 Switch they're like, wtf is this shit? My son (12) outright laughs at it. I get the feeling that 1-2 Switch is a game I'll never actually play the way it's intended. Just like NintendoLand. I dig the ad though and running it during the Super Bowl is a must.

Nailed it. This is going to get a loooooot of views and it's pretty crucial they didn't fuck this up. Excellent job.

That's all well and good, but that doesn't change the fact that if you are trying to introduce your product to a wide and diverse audience you would show the ad that conveys the full array of experiences your device offers, not the ad that only showcases a single game that while great is from a series that has never broken 10 million.

The Zelda ad is a great follow up ad to be aired after the Super Bowl as a regular ad spot. As would other companion ads feature stuff like 1 2 Switch, ARMS, Just Dance and Mario Kart.

I don't know, ARMS part immediately evoked a, man I miss Wii Sports moment in my mind. If that riles enough people up to buy one that skipped the Wii U then it is doing its job.

(I'm guessing this is what you are referring to as the 99% of those situations): The whole party atmosphere playing Harry Potter 1,2 Switch. It isn't as far off as you think, there's still a market for casual party games. Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Wii Sports, they were all massive successes in college and party atmospheres; I don't think that market just dried up, just need to re-tap it. Now do I think playing a western shoot out game is it? No, but it's not a bad market to target.

For the other situations, I've played my 3DS just about everywhere. I don't see how its a reach to think people will be playing this at the laundry mat or in classrooms (we've done the latter with the original DS download play).

Yeah i don't know.
That would require a guy who knows zelda but is not hyped enough to buy it, but will be suddenly decided by those footage. I don't believe in it but who knows. At least it's not the right message for 99% of people looking at the superbowl.

Maybe somehow Nintendo thinks Zelda is soo amazing this time that it will sale console to non nintendo fans based on footage alone. But .. i think they're overestimating its appeal based on video alone.. Just look at gaf reactions in general, outside of the group of people who actually love Zelda.. "it's ugly, it's empty.."
