That's where i'm pessimistic (or realistic) about the state and popularity of nintendo ips.

Things have changed. Zelda is a core gamer ip, for nintendo fans. hey, if i read all the messages above, you would think zelda alone is such a killer app, then why did Gamecube and WiiU tanked ?

I think you have a group of people (that can be large, but they already know) that play all zeldas. And i think you have an other group who think zelda is a dated ip that never evolves.

No, Zelda isn't a massive system seller, but that isn't what I meant. You argue that Nintendo's IPs aren't as big as they used to be yet there is SO much evidence to the contrary: Pokemon GO and the subsequent success of S/M, Nintendo's move into theme parks, the extreme prevalence of Zelda merchandise in stereotypical 'geek' stores and Nintendo being at the goddamn Olympics. Zelda, after Pokemon and Mario, is one of Nintendo's biggest IPs, to suggest that there are only die-hard fans left is ridiculous.

Having just watched the commercial I really think they should have shown him outside truly away from his console. If I watched this having no idea of what the Switch was I'd just think "oh Wii U 2.0 with improved off tv play" not "oh a handheld hybrid console that you can take anywhere"

Which is totally non-hipster. Like a hipster would actively trashy that stuff while praising whatever indie artist they listen to that you haven't heard of to show their superior tastes. :D

True that, I guess I didn't fully understand the meaning of hipster, lol. I thought it was someone who thinks they're cutting edge and different but in fact are very mainstream.

Yeah, irrelevant really, because my point is that the person who sees this advert and Switch for the first time, they're seeing a handheld that can connect to a TV, not a console that can turn in to a handheld. Which is the opposite of their initial reveal. That's how it plays out in this advert.

I agree. Bad move by them.

Plot twist, it's both! :O

I don't think that matters, really, because I don't think most people who don't follow gaming remember the WiiU is a thing.

The biggest issue with the Super Bowl ad is that it doesn't show off the detachable joycons, joycon grip, kickstand, individual controllers for multiplayers and so-on. As it is it just looks like a tablet that can connect to a TV...not exactly revolutionary.

How much did you expect them to cram into a 30-second ad? TV ads are usually designed to spur interest, not provide all of the details up front.

This was sooooo good. It's like Apple (or whoever does ads for Apple) made it or something.

Made me want to buy one.

However, I know better.

Assuming people even know about the Wii U lol

No-one's mentioned it yet but I can definitely see the extended cut being shown prominently in cinemas. Get that thing before Beauty and the Beast, Logan, The Lego Batman Movie, GotG2, etc and they've covered practically every demographic out there. I saw a Splatoon trailer literally right before Mad Max so it's not like Nintendo's cinema-shy.

Jason Kidd murdered my dog in cold blood!
I think I'm an outlier, but at my my last two jobs, we'd play battlefield (2142 this was in 06-07, then we moved to 3) on lunch or after worrk, as well as Halo, Counter strike, diablo 3 and league of legends.

In college, we played a lot of DDR, 8 player halo, 8 player double dash, Pac Man VS, and even crystal chronicles (senior year was such a fun year!).

Even now at a smaller company (there is only 7 of us), me and the guy i share an office with play games on lunch (he plays some mobile game, I'll play something on steam like transistor or a match on LoL), so I'll definitely be bringing my Switch to work.

There have been plenty of parties where people are playing games like just dance and wii sports, so I can even relate to that.

When i went to see the first silent hill movie, We got 8 player mario kart DS going in the theater (i only knew one person out of the other 7 players), and it was glorious.

So while these scenarios seem very unrealistic, I can say this stuff DOES really happen in the real world.

Unrealistic in the sense that there's not a big enough market to sustain a console if this is all that it has going for it (and, so far, it's what Nintendo is emphasizing). In each of those examples you give, those are things that you would own and desire regardless. If you couldn't play 8 player mario kart at the movies, you'd still want mario kart, and you didn't buy a DS for that reason. Here, Nintendo is positioning the switch as something you'd want to play in these random locations. I think that's the main difference.

Can you tell me what's even going on based on this ad? They aren't looking at the screen, that would just be for bystanders. Whatever interaction they're having with the game is based on motion controls and HD rumble. So how do you know how much fun it is based on circling that screen?

I don't know, someone did laugh at me in class when I mentioned I play tekken competitively and like esports.

A general liking of games definitely isn't in the same ballpark as liking esports. I'm not judging, but a general audience is definitely going to have a hard time understanding why people would play a game competitively. That said, I don't agree that there isn't a general nerd stigma to this day regardless. There are plenty of people who don't understand and look down on those who play video games.

Yep every movie I take my daughter to has a Nintendo spot. Kids love it to as there is almost always commotion and chatter (my daughter included).

silly BRocknRolla, everyone knows human interaction isn't fun!

the ad is good but people in this forum overthink way too much. It's a commercial for their new system with the biggest launch title. It's 30 seconds, can't do more than that. The commercial will help bring attention from people that don't know about the system, it won't be the defining factor of the success of the system, but it's a good move. it's just that, a good move.

Nah, they shun the mainstream. The irony is they think they're being non-conformist when they're just conforming to a subculture. And one much larger than other groups that do the same like goths and what not.

I... I don't think you ever actually played a Wii U based on this. The range was horrendous. I couldn't walk more than 15 feet away from my system with it without the screen starting to generate artifacts.

It's even worse in old buildings. I (used to live) in a 200-year-old house with thick stone walls and I couldn't even play in the bathroom that wasn't even 15 feet away from where the console was.

Wow, thank goodness for the ad company!
I love that they even paired up SF2 with the laundromat, which was a common place to find arcade games back in the day.

The message that this travels with you and is something anyone can find something of interest to play in any setting and with a friend is more valuable than all that talk of hidden ice cubes could ever be.

It just varies by place. The max range is around 30 ft. Like you, I could never use it outside of the room the Wii U's as in (dropped at 10-15ft).

But a friend had one and their house was an open floor plan not the first level and you could definitely get 30ish feet away there before it had issues.

So yeah, it was very limited for most of us, but some had layouts where it worked, or had their bedroom above the tv downstairs and the floor/ceiling was thin enough for the streaming to work.

I find Nintendo's "examples" of Switch use ridiculous.

Who's going to do this. Who.

Was this the first commercial you've ever seen or something?

At cinemark theaters a coke commercial always runs of ten highschool kids sitting in a row singing while they pass their coke and popcorn to each other in rhythm. Can you believe this ridiculous example of how to enjoy a Coke?

That very first scene... in bed, with Zelda? THAT'S ME. Nintendo knows it and I salute their marketing effort.

Some GameStop units are getting demo units before launch, if anyone wants to make a thread.

Can't make it to a Switch hands-on event? You might want to keep an eye on your local GameStop. There are multiple reports coming in stating that GameStop locations should get demo units somewhere between one-to-two weeks prior to the Switch launch. In other words, some locations could have their units just two weeks from now!

We have had this information confirmed by our GameStop source, which is why we are sharing this as confirmed instead of rumor.

Love the short ad but the extended ad gave me war flashbacks of the waggle happy family ads of the Wii/Wii U era and that is noooooo nice. They even shown freaking Just Dance... Nintendo really loves their motion controls, isn'it? Casual people is gonna be like "Look, Nintendo is releasing Wii 2.0!" And that could be either the best thing or the worst. I simply don't know anymore.

But massive props for Nintendo for stepping their marketing ad. Nothing like promoting your thing on the Super Bowl. This thing is gonna sell sooooooo damn well.

Fair enough. but I think it's more showing the versatility of the console more so than and idea way to play. It's more of a plethora of scenarios the Switch can thrive in, ideal or not. But as to what your argument is, I do agree in the sense that it covers a lot in that vid and isn't really focused on a specific aspect of gaming, which could be hurtful if not conveyed in other ways.

Thankfully, this ad is an outlier and they in the shorter videos it's more focus on one aspect of this console at a time

Not sure if this is sarcasm, but I'll respond as if it isn't. I don't think I've ever seen a "mainstream" commercial that advertised pre-ordering a product. Isn't that normally aimed at the "core" fanbase?

Right, the day one folks aren't the ones that need to be sold with a Super Bowl Commercial.

If you're saying you viewed this like a casual viewer you wouldn't know what a Wii u is

I saw the extended cut first and I was worried that they were going to air that one. Good thing the actual 30 second cut is so on point.

The short ad is fine for a Zelda ad.

The long one has a bit of issues. It's stuck trying to be the Wii and the Switch. The UK one is better as a long ad.

I like the music choice.
