DF - Horizon is a technical masterpiece on PS4 and Pro

I can't be the only one wondering at what point did we get to praising a stable 30 fps performance on consoles as a remarkable achievement, can I?

Yes, definitely. If you have any sort of eye for the tech aspect of games, you will see a big difference.

Downsampling for the game was announced on the day of the Pro's announcement!

thanks

hype is back up.

When it looks like that? 30fps is enough.

What open world games look better at this level of performance?

The Witcher 3 is the only one that comes close, but that's only if we're comparing the PC version.

If we're comparing the PC version it comes out on top easily. Apples to oranges.

People gotta chill out with the circlejerking in here.

When a good amount of open world games and even some linear games can't even hit a stable 30? And on top of that this game looks better visually than all those games

Guerilla games putting in the work great showcase for all platforms. I know this isn't about visuals but @dark10x is it just me or is the texture filtering not so good?
Edit -
Noted in the article
Also worthy of praise is a marked increase in texture filtering quality. Lower levels of anisotropic filtering on base hardware can stand out on a 1080p image - but the effect is much more pronounced at 4K. Thankfully this is not an issue with Horizon.

The PS4 isn't exactly powerful by modern standards. I think the visuals on display here are very impressive, and a very stable 30fps is a great achievement in that respect.

This downsamples right?

Yes it will down sample to 1080p and also day one patch includes unlocked framerate at 1080p too on the Pro

"Horizon Zero dawn will receive a small day zero patch that will build upon PlayStation 4 Pro support, adding a Performance mode which will favor smoother framerates while delivering higher visual fidelity in the 1080p mode. This mode is available for both 4K and 1080p displays."

Yes, definitely. If you have any sort of eye for the tech aspect of games, you will see a big difference. The boost to clarity is very much noticeable and it actually sorta makes me miss playing on a 1080p set. Playing a game in anything lower than 4K on a 4K set is super obvious looking at times while downsampling to a 1080p screen always looked great.

Nice, thanks. Think I'm going to take the plunge now for a pro.

If I get a pro but not a 4K tv will I see enough difference over a reg PS4 on my 1080p tv?

AS far as I know there is downsampling and a slightly improved viewing distance on the pro. So yeah.

But the thing that interests me the most is the 'performance' mode DF mentioned. I'm very curious how much they'll be able to push fps here.

With an open world that looks as good as this? C'mon, on PS4's hardware it's a remarkable achievement. I don't think there's even a PC game that looks as good as this, and I'm mainly a PC gamer.

The recent news of a higher framerate patch for the Pro has me interested for DF's next video. That it is stable on both PS4 models is encouraging.

Welp, after getting a 55" 4K TV during BF, I guess that seals the deal for what my upgrade will be this year

I guess I need a PS4Pro.

I can trade a 500gb slim for it, so it should help.

Question not directly related: does the AV amplifier need to be compatible 4K or is it pass through in that regard. My current one is a nice older Denon that is not 3D compatible afaik.

You have to take into consideration what is on screen. Hitting a stable 30fps is not impressive in and of itself, it's when you do it within the context of a game like this.

God of War will top it. Then Days Gone will top that and Last of Us 2 after that. Sony's AAA titles keep raising the bar on a technical level. It's crazy.

Didn't know we had a clairvoyant among us! Praise be - On a more serious note; if you look at what we've seen of Days Gone then it's certainly not gonna top Horizon. No clue about GoW nor TLOU though.

Thanks, wanted to know this.

And as far as the unlocked framerates, I'll wait for DF to tell me whether that's a worthwhile option or not.

Everyone would die to be able to market their games at locked 60fps on consoles, so when it simply says "unlocked" i'm usually expecting big fluctuations...

so, no downsampling for 1080p PRO owners? you didn't mention that in the video or the written article

Haha, this made me laugh for some reason. I don't mean to be an ass, you should've ended your post with #tvgoals

As an owner of a 8 year old 46" 1080p TV, I need a good 4K tv myself. And I'm so Bummed can't afford one right now.
4K means shit to me. Quality 1080p sets finally got to a price range where I felt it was time to upgrade. My 720p set is in the perfect range (2008, less than 15ms input lag, S-Video in and 240p support) to be great for retro consoles so it's still getting work.

Yup, you'll need to upgrade your AVR. Or go HDMI direct into the tv and optical back out to AVR and lose lossless audio....

A real sophie's choice there.

It's funny how often people make this kind of comment.

It's not actually easy to create a game that looks fantastic, but holds a locked framerate, when it can be incredibly hard to predict what will be on the screen at any given time.

It is now considered a remarkable achievement because (1) there is rigorous testing of games by groups like Digital Foundry that have shattered the illusion that most games had locked framerates, and (2) because it's hard to lock down a framerate without lowering the quality of the graphics just so, when things get really hectic, it will still be okay.

Thanks mate for the video (you guys are on quite a roll recently). Did you notice any difference in LoD transitions between the Pro and Base?

Also, it'll be interesting to see whether the patch will allow downscaling to 1080p with upgraded visual features like LoD transitions, AF etc akin to Shadow of Mordor.

TW3 + STLM = Kreygasm. But that's the only thing I can think of, really.

Bingo. I'm personally a lot more concerned with having 60fps than high visual fidelity; and with what they've achieved here at 30FPS I'd love to have seen how it'd look at 60 (because it'd surely be quite a thing nonetheless) but still, it's... Quite something.

Dam. Gonna have to be super convincing with my wife hehe.

Any recommendation under $400 (even under $300 if possible) for AVR?

Big open world with AAA visuals at a stable 30 fps certainly is rare on consoles.

To me the best part by far is this:

Also important is the consistency of performance during traversal in the open world. Producing a sandbox game of this scale is not an insignificant task - many similar titles struggle to maintain solid performance during traversal as the CPU needs to stream in and decompress open world data on the fly, while continuing to process game logic and prepare instructions for the GPU. It's for this reason that titles like Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3 can hitch and stutter when the player does nothing more than move from A to B through the environment. Crucially, Horizon Zero Dawn is immune to this issue - making your way through the open world is a super-smooth experience regardless of the PlayStation hardware you're using.

I know that supersampling was confirmed months ago with a blog entry, but is it present in the final game? There's no mention about it in the DF article or the reviews.

Last of us downsampling was confirmed at the PRO launch in a blog article, but then...

I thought Days Gone looked pretty insane last year. People are sleeping on that one I think.

I would've had that answer immediately in 2011. now? I'm probably not the best person to ask as i haven't kept up. Fwiw, i've had Denon in the past, like yourself, and have always had pretty good luck.

Seems like a tech marvel.

Still not seeing a compelling reason to pick up a Pro for now, which in my case is a very great thing. Certainly, I can see a difference between the image quality during a direct comparison, but I'm pleased that Sony is largely sticking to the promise of "no games hampered on regular PS4."

perfect frame pacing and almost flawless 30fps with the 'worse' framerate drops being 28fps at very rare cases across both PS4 and PS4 Pro?

Damn...these Guerrilla guys knew how to program engines.

Can sony send some of the Guerrilla guys to FROM software to teach them how to properly code graphic engines?

Can you imagine if this was as linear as an Uncharted game? What Guerilla accomplished on such a large scale is truly astonishing.

on first party*

but I think 3rd party still tries their best since the base model population is dozen of times larger than the pro's.

Digital Foundry:

Any comment regarding PS4 pro NOISE level when running this game in 4k?

Is it UC4 noise levels?

Bought a Pro but only have an 1080p TV, I'll get a 4k HDR later this year, super excited to replay a lot of my favourite games when I get it.

I just got a 65 inch 4k hdr ready lg to compliment my pro not too long ago, im really excited to get horizon up and running on this thinf. Ffxv so far is the game thats blown me away the most with its use of hdr, i hope horizon is another one.

The lighting looked a tad dull and there was a good bit of of awful-looking LOD issues and noticeably low-res textures, but that's probably a sacrifice you have to make to have several dozen rampaging zombies on screen.

Not that you'd be likely to notice whilst being chased by said few dozen zombies.
