DF - Horizon is a technical masterpiece on PS4 and Pro

on first party*

but I think 3rd party still tries their best since the base model population is dozen of times larger than the pro's.

Probably should have specified I meant "for exclusives."

I have a decent PC so the performance of third party games isn't personally an issue, but I do hope for others' sake that PS4 Pro doesn't become a crutch for developers to do quick and sloppy ports.

You have to take into consideration what is on screen. Hitting a stable 30fps is not impressive in and of itself, it's when you do it within the context of a game like this.

I really don't. A console game must run at a stable / locked 30 fps as a bare minimum, no matter what's on the screen. This isn't an achievement, it's how every game out there should be. We seem to be forgetting this for some time now for some reason.

The comments on YT suck as usual but, beware, I just deleted a major story spoiler that someone posted. I'll try to keep an eye on it but I can't promise someone won't do it again. People are jerks sometimes.

...but most console games don't look like this.

The point is, most open world games with environments of this scale tend to run poorly on consoles. This doesn't hence the praise.

I thought Days Gone looked pretty insane last year. People are sleeping on that one I think.
Most people are in the 'I'm sick of Zombies' mode. Which is fine. But I'm with you: Days gone is on my radar. The sheer amount of Zombies paired with their high speed could actually be the base for interesting gameplay.

I quite enjoyed how they looked at behaved a lot like the zombies in the World War Z movie; very much swarming like insects or something. Really gives a nice visual effect to the otherwise boring nature of zombies.

... I still don't understand how we haven't had a proper good zombie game with slow zombies, though. :[

Digital Foundry:

Any comment regarding PS4 pro NOISE level when running this game in 4k?

Is it UC4 noise levels?

I have played it on PS4 and Pro..

Pro (on a 1080p TV).. surprisingly silent.. Not like other games.. it never revs up.

PS4... REALLY noisy for me.. the fans go crazy at times. My wife asked yesterday when I played the game.

"WTF is that noise.?"

Normally my old ps4 revs up a bit during some games.. but this game man, it is really something else. But that might just be my old launch PS4, that is getting old.

Can't wait to see how this looks in 4K.

Wonder if it can surpass R & C for IQ, because that game looks stunning in 4k.

Great video. I thoroughly enjoy the work these guys do.

I was already thrilled with my Pro/KS8000 combo, but bought them largely on the potential of Horizon and Mass Effect. Fantastic news that this seemingly knocks it out of the park.

Also, really great to hear the OG performance is up to snuff as well. Sounds like everyone is in for a treat next week.

I was expecting it to look impressive but what they've achieved is far more than I was expecting. I'm really surprised that it's as stable as it is.

I'm still more than a little disappointed with the lack of interaction you have with the water and the majority of the vegetation although it is entirely understandable due to everything thing else that's going on as you play.

Loving the crisp, highly detailed HUD and UI texture at 4K. Shadow quality also looks impressively consistent for an open-world game.

The lack of water interaction effects is probably the only standout issue I'm seeing.

This has certainly laid down an impressive bar for other developers to follow. Obviously they've been able to get exceptional results by 100% building the game from the ground up with PS4's architecture in mind, but it amuses me that you get stuff like this when certain other games like Final Fantasy XV use dynamic resolution on base PS4 and look considerably worse overall in terms of detail, foliage etc.

Come on GG, share the love, let some other devs use Decima!

Yeah, water is the biggest weak point in the game. Reflections are simplistic and there isn't any kind of noticeable interaction. Some of the rivers can look cool but large pools aren't great...

...but it feels like a nitpick considering how beautiful everything else is.

Exactly, All games could hit 30 or 60 fps if the designers didn't really care on how they looked, Guerrilla should be commended on getting something that looks almost the quality of Uncharted 4 in an open world environment.

hmm. still no answer on downsampling for 1080p owners, that means a no go? after ND removed that from the last of us and even changed the blog post where it was promised i became a bit skeptical

As mentioned before by others as well.

Yes it will down sample to 1080p and also day one patch includes unlocked framerate at 1080p too on the Pro

"Horizon Zero dawn will receive a small day zero patch that will build upon PlayStation 4 Pro support, adding a Performance mode which will favor smoother framerates while delivering higher visual fidelity in the 1080p mode. This mode is available for both 4K and 1080p displays."

dunno all the hype about performance and IQ, they released killzone at launch with these graphics and frames above 30fps on ps4 so they had plenty of time to improve that.

I'm so glad regarding the improved texture filtering on PS4 Pro. If you go the the written article there are some comparison screenshots that examplify that really well.
IQ of the Pro version is really sublime. Shows how much developers can do when the Pro support isn't rushed or tacked on.

Oh sorry, missed your comment earlier. To make up for it, here's a shot captured using 1080p output. Yes, it's downsampled.

Excellent job as usual Dark10x. Guerrila have really outdone themselves with this one.

If we're comparing the PC version it comes out on top easily. Apples to oranges.

People gotta chill out with the circlejerking in here.

I don't agree with this. Witcher 3 on PC doesn't really change the geometry and doesn't change the lighting model, and doesn't improve character models. These are all things which Horizon excels at over W3. I would put it in Horizon's favour.

thanks, im really not that interested in that performance option unless is a solid 60, i much prefer a solid 30 with the option to downsample

Did you happen to notice any chugging in the area surrounding the big city, in the forest outskirts. I noticed a few noticeable skips in frame rate a handful of times on PS4 Pro. More like a huge stutter versus slowdown.

More than happy to ride out my Slim until PS5. I honestly cannot ask for a better looking game that also manages to perform well.

I can't be the only one wondering at what point did we get to praising a stable 30 fps performance on consoles as a remarkable achievement, can I?
Under the context of open world games, and games that have variable weather, and can have huge spikes in alpha effects and that run in 1080p, and look like THAT... yes.

I did notice a big stutter exactly one time where the screen actually tore - I couldn't capture it and I was unable to replicate. I just assumed it was something in the background that caused it since clearly the game uses v-sync. A strange thing but super rare (at least here).

OK, there's one thing about this game that really caught me - the scale.

We have a LOT of open world games today, obviously, but I feel that many of them don't really capitalize on scale.

The Witcher 3 does indeed sport a large, open environment and it often throws massive views at the player but there's something about the way it is presented that feels off. It never really FEELS as big as it should. Does that make sense?

JAnc.jpg

Conversely, this is something I feel that FROM Software nails with the Souls games even though they are not open world. The art and construction of the world simply conveys something massive.

I feel like Horizon actually does something similar. The environments just feel huge at times in a way that is very compelling.

Only thing that irks me is the water in this game and grass not physically bending by your character. That DF vid showed swimming in the water and it looked like paper. It doesn't even create ripples or splashes when you swim. Looks very dated wish they could improve that

Wonderful work from Guerrilla, as always

Smooth performance on both consoles and a full 2160c with improved AF and textures on the Pro. This is the new benchmark for both versions of the console. They've pretty much bridged the gap in visuals between linear and open world titles while maintaining even performance on both and having more Pro enhancements than most games do.

Seems like GG put in some major work on both PS4 & PRO versions and hopefully it'll pay off for them. The game looks drop dead gorgeous and is nice to read that performance is super solid. I really want a 4K OLED set for this game.

SAME

I want a 4K/HDR set so bad for my first time through this but can't afford it right now

Is there another PC gamer downplaying this because it's 30 fps? Yikes, as if making engines this complex was that simple. Can't we just appreciate GG's work for a minute?

Nonsense, if it was that easy all devs would do it, I'll defer to Digital Foundry over you. What knowledge of the tech and engines do you have other then "her der 30 fps"?

Fuck it, preordered. 2 days before the Switch but it looks awesome and looks like a real showcase for my OLED + PS4 Pro. I'll monster it as much as I can until the Switch arrives.

because the scale of witcher 3 is bigger and it uses less cliffy landscape.
but when you reach overhang vistas i disagree and the difference in scale can be seen
(i had 16:9 reddit example but can't link it...but what i mean don't come from aspect ratio)

That city structure looks indeed huge! O: I was wondering if there were only little villages in this game. I'm pretty sure this city isn't even half as big as Novigrad (which is okay, it's a sparsely populated post-apocalyptic world) but still it looks so much bigger and impressive than Novigrad, at least from the outside, which illustrates your point well. There is some really well done trickery going on.
