Prove that turned based can be great in AAA games because frankly Persona 5 has the best turned based system ever made, imo.
Absolutely. Going back to other JRPGs after P5 just feels incredibly sluggish because of how fast battles fly by in P5. Not only are the menus stylish, they're incredibly quick and once you get a hang of the controls, you can almost always execute the option you want to before the menu is even done animating. Mapping the commands to buttons on the controller is fucking
genius too. During some of the boss fights, things were in such constant momentum that I would forget the game was even turn based.
This game is the definitive proof that it is absolutely possible to "modernize" a JRPG while still keeping it turn based; It doesn't need to become an ARPG to innovate.
Without spoiling me too much, how is the dungeon crawling in this game?
It was atrocious in 3 FES and 4, and probably the only thing keeping me from considering either of those games truly GOTY worthy.
Completely different, and far, far better. All but one of the dungeons are handcrafted, rather than the procedurally generated slogs of P3/4. The design in them is fantastic, each of them is built around a set of gimmicks to keep them interesting and from being plain dungeon crawls, and the art direction in them is superb.
