God Of War PS4 playable from start to finish

Wut!?!? June release!?!? Ultimate E3?

Father's Day in spain is in march.

Be cool if they were able to release it in the fall of this year, but having a huge tentpole first party release at the beginning of the year has served Sony really well the last 3 years, so I think they continue that trend and GoW is March 2018.

If it ain't releasing this year, why bother with ads already?

Don't believe for a second it's launching earlier than March 2018.

We were discussing this in the Sony First Party thread, but Q1 having a tentpole game has kind of just happened as those games were originally supposed to be holiday releases.

2014 - The Order: 1886 was supposed to release during the fall. It released February of 2015.

2015 - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was supposed to release during the fall. It released April of 2016.

2016 - Horizon: Zero Dawn was supposed to release during the fall. It released February of 2017.

Infamous: Second Son and Bloodborne were supposed to release when they did, though Bloodborne wasn't as much of a tentpole game based on sales/advertising as The Order: 1886 was supposed to be.

So yeah, point I'm making is simply that they released these big games earlier in the year even though the intent was for them to be holiday releases.

Yeah, its not like Sony doesn't want to release games in the Fall/Holiday season, they just have to delay games for extra polish time.
I think Bloodborne was announced for Q1 and also released in that time frame, despite delay.

Regardless it's a strategy that's worked even if on some occasions it's been a happy accident, and probably given them more confidence in letting devs have those extra months of time to polish their games up instead of rushing them out for Fall, which they might have done in the past. It also allows them to avoid pitting their games up against the big fall 3rd party releases.

It's not really some occasions. It's every occasion this generation. ;)

I wonder if those games were ever really supposed to release in the fall. Or actually they just say that to create some excitement around the games at E3. People are more interested in what they can play this year than next year.

I don't think anyone ever really expected Horizon to release last year.

Holla! :p

It was only a 2 - 3 month delay, and the game was revealed with a pure gameplay trailer, which doesn't always happen. A lot of us expected it to be their big 2016 fall release.

Plus, when it was announced, it was 2015, just as The Order was announced in 2013, Uncharted in 2013 (with footage that people thought was in-game in 2014), etc. By and large, Sony reveals stuff at E3 that won't be released for at least another year with a few exceptions (ex: opening E3 2015 with a Last Guardian trailer and 2016 at the end of it, opening E3 2016 with God of War with no release date attached). So with a full gameplay reveal in 2015, fall 2016 seemed doable.

I'll be Ok with a trailer showcasing a boss fight, actually. Don't need another 10 minute gameplay section. Or they just might give us a story trailer with some cool as fuck scenes cut into it.

Que? They can release this in the Fall and it'd sell gangbusters. It's GoW for goodness sake.

They can release it any day of any year and it'd do its thing.

This is true but why, keep I mind they're looking at Horizons placement and its success.

Why fight fall titles when you can have a month or two by yourself?

Trust me, I want this game in 2017 but I can understand the business move

Edit: ^^^ Like Kaiju said a post up, they will be doing marketing bundles for the fall, You don't directly compete with them at the same time, its not a good look. Kinda defeats the purpose of the partnership, Why not just market your own GoW bundle instead.

I agree with the March 2018 release more than 2017.

Just hyping it up for E3, with E3 showing the date of release.

New stage demo at E3 this year with a release date at the end: March 6th 2018.

Seriously if the game is soon to be released, then why being scant for releasing more materials for this game, not even for the GOW2 10 year anniversary? I still think this game will come out in March 2018.

I'd be tempted if they reimagined GoW 1/2 in the new GoW (or even tuned up GoW 3 ) engine.

Because companies that rely on E3 for a significant pivot as their marketing platform tend to want E3 to be their next coming-out party for the next big update.

At some point they have had to realize that it is also good business that releases in the first quarter of the year aren't automatically sent out to die. The old concept that a game had to come out in the holiday season for sales, one that could easily be attributed to all 3 big guys in the past, clearly was wrong. No longer do the big games need to be held onto for holidays when they can sell at any point.

A summer game like TLOU (a new IP at the time) and a spring game like what we've seen the past few years, will do well if they are good games. This is also good because it gets out of the way of the games your 3rd party partners want to release in the holiday season, and can even be used as part of contract negotiations ("hey, you're more likely to sign your game up with us as we'll push it for you on our channels, and we won't send out one of our games to take up sales from yours").

We'll be seeing more and more spring, summer and fall releases from sony I would imagine and not this heavy emphasis on the holidays. Perhaps the one holiday release they could get away would be something like GT, simply because your 3rd party partners don't do racing games, so you argue that it's a different audience that goes for it and in turn you aren't taking sales from them.

probably going to be strongly inspired by logan now lol

but i wonder when Red dead 2 is coming out maybe 2018 as well it's going to be another strong year

There was a thread about sony's first party titles. They have so many titles coming that we cant even know what is coming earlier/later. GT Sport has a Beta starting tomorrow, the game was supposed to launch last Fall so they for sure can have it ready before summer, but at the same time there is no need to rush.

There are titles like Crash (not 1sst, but it's a 'playstation franchise'), Wipeout are also coming to fill the 'lack' (what lack?) of games before fall. On Fall there will Destiny 2, the usual Call of Duty, Assassins Creed...

I guess Sony can just wait and release their titles when it's needed, they are probably waiting to get more info about Scorpio launch titles and stuff. I can see Sony holding GT Sport to release 2 weeks before Scorpio just to have a big hit (we cant forget Mario is coming around the same time!). Before that we could get Uncharted (august/september), and for next year God of War in March as usual starting the year hot (as Horizon now).

There is a Spiderman movie coming in July, so I wouldnt be surprised if the Spiderman game would come right after it too. They can have a great presentation in June on E3, then the moie comes and then the game.

Don't forget that Sony give a lot of leeway to their local marketing agencies to come up with fun stuff, even off-season. PS4 is dominant in Spain, and the confluence of Horizon's launch being done and Father's Day happening was a fortunate confluence of dates.

It could even be the result of some left over HZD media budget and with the game selling so well they decided to have a little bit of fun with some outdoor sites they'd already booked.

I wonder if Sony is looking to fill the action niche since God of War changed heavily in style.

Perhaps not. May be wishful thinking -- the idea of a modern action game now is Souls.

They can do Aloy and Rost but they choose GoW...

It doesn't look like its a campaign with a ton of time spent on it. Besides, father-figure and badass in his own right Rost may be, but if you're doing the 'My dad's harder than yours' Kratos is the ONLY choice.

While this is true, you have to wonder how Horizon might have done if it came out last October or November in close proximity to Battlefield, COD, Gears, Watch Dogs, Dishonoured 2, FFXV, etc. Most of these games underperformed, and I can't see Horizon having sold near 3 million copies in a fortnight if it came out in this crowded period as well. Pre-Christmas this year is going to be even harsher, and I can see almost anything that's not RDR2, Destiny 2 and Battlefront 2 coming in below expectations. Shadow of Wardor will probably do very good numbers as well, although that's coming out a bit before these others.

It makes some sense but something like GOW is its own marquee brand. Given the interest in this new reboot I don't see Sony moving it to a 4th quarter window unless it needs it. Those other holiday releases are getting long in the tooth also, especially COD. I think Battlefront 2 will be huge because its Star Wars and the new movie will be out in December, other than that, its wide open.

Does it piss anyone else off that there's been absolutely no news on the game since E3 last year? Why can't devs show snippets of the game in between E3s??

Absolutely not!! its not like they have announced any release date either, so that we can say that they are trying to be more secretive about the game.

It's just that it's annoying that E3's the only time when there's any real news about a game. It's all silent otherwise.

If it means a full blown reveal, trailer, game play segments, official synopsis and all that jazz come this E3, I'll be OK with it.

I get the point that you are not the only one craving for more news,If you look at the Cory's Twitter, he has been asked hundred times about new info, and each time he had to say the same thing(similar)

"Working hard and can't wait to share when its ready"

Wow. This news actually concerns me even more for Days Gone and Sony Bend because I think it pushes out their release date... I can't imagine they'll be allowed to keep the doors open unless that game is a mega hit.
