PS4 Pro Won't Support 4k BluRay

I'm thinking of picking it up. The price isn't too bad. Also going to watch John Wick in UHD soon as well. 4K streaming just isn't up to snuff right now, so I really like the UHD option on XB1. It's been a great player for me. Hopefully Sony's next revision of the PS4 Pro includes a UHD drive. It would only help the format, which is doing alright from the looks of it.

I was just sitting there thinking this is crazy. The picture is stunning. Its demo material for 4k and HDR.

DEMO MATERIAL!!!!!

I have a 4K TV & I'm downplaying the exclusion of a UHD drive.

Why? because the Disc isn't a big deal in this day & age & UHD Blu-rays are basically Blu-ray discs using better encoding & as long as PS4 Pro & other media boxes can play new formats UHD Blu-rays will not be missed,

No UHD drive might bother some but not me because I love setting up media severs & it's getting easier for people to manage their own media servers , also you have these cheap Android TV boxes that can also double as NAS & DLNA boxes with large HDD that can send 4K media to your 4K TV & other devices. you can even hook the HDD right up to your PS4 & other devices.

I really don't think UHD Blu-ray with 100GB was worth starting a new format for I think it's a stop gap format that will be mostly overlooked & they will try to replace it with another format in a few years but that format will probably bomb pretty bad.

All of this text and still no way to watch Planet Earth II in 4K. That's the problem.

I don't wanna have to buy an Xbox One to play blurays but it's looking like I might have to. Oh how the tables have turned from last gen.

Same here. No interest in the Xbox. I won't buy a game for it. Would have bought a Pro. Is Xbox still the cheapest UHD Blu-ray player available?

Not to pour salt on the wound but I watched episode 1 last night and it was glorious. I would have purchased a Pro and skipped the One S entirely if the Pro would have shipped with a UHD drive. As it stands I went with the One S at launch but I'm waiting on deals for a Pro, so I came around eventually. Got a list of exclusives I wanna get to.

is planet earth only available on 4K blu ray?

right now, its 4K/HDR-10 version is only on UHD Blu-ray. there's also a 1080p SDR Blu-ray edition (meaning, like all other standard Blu-rays). BBC has yet to announce plans to license the series to any streaming platforms, let alone plans to stream in 4K/HDR.

To be fair he didn't say there's no way to watch Planet Earth II on a PS4. He's clearly talking about a 4k disc, in which case options are limited to dedicated standalone players or an Xbox One S. PC drives are coming?

Some pc drives already can read 4k discs, there just isn't any software.

wow. then the answer is yes, the only way to watch it in 4K is via physical media.

i understood that, i was just asking because it looked like he was saying that planet earth 2 wasn't available to stream in 4K, which turns out to be true.

isn't that true for most movies? doesn't seem so revelatory to me
i don't actually know. i assumed most if not all movies from last and this year so far when released for home media are available on both blu ray and digital
LOL! Is it? You have a thread "Scorpio will have UHD drive". Instead you bumped this thread with no reason saying Scorpio will have UHD drive. Yes, you trolled.
No, I didn't troll. Stop saying that. I posted in that thread, and in this thread because it is of my opinion that scorpio adding that makes the decision to not have one in the pro look worse.

I hope that the folks who're so opposed to an UHD-BD drive will have the same reaction if Sony introduces a new model with UHD-BD drive.

Shit, they should've dropped the HDD to 500GB. Give it even more power, silly Sony.

Not opposed... just understanding

They add the drive and increased the price, but PS3 and Xbox One at above $399 shows that would be a mistake.

They wait to release Pro and add the drive since some suggest they didn't have the drive ready. I don't see how that is a positive for Sony or the MAJORITY or consumers who wanted to purchase the Pro.

Or they could downgrade items in the Pro to add the drive and still reach $399.

Thank goodness they didn't do any of the 3 suggestions in this thread.

I guess my question to those who wanted their game console to play UHD but can't afford a standalone play, who did you plan to buy a bunch of movies if money is the issue? Serious question.

Yes, YOU DID! You have Scorpio thread for that. This thread has nothing to do with Scorpio.

If the Pro had UHDBluray support I would already own Planet Earth II. I'm thinking about picking up a UBD-K8500 to attach to my KS8000.

Do it. its a better UHD player than the x1s by far as for what it supports. It's 250$ on sale at BB atm and 214$ if you find one open box/refurb. Also the X1S has issues playing the latest UHDs on occasion anyway. And in particular doesn't play as nice with samsung setups for some reason. It's been discussed in the bluray forums quite regularly. Also loads faster than the new Sony UHD player although that player is 299.99 atm and you can get 2 free SONY UHD movies by mail. But if you would rather go that route its also fine just be aware the 8500 loads a bit faster.

yeah so am I. I was under the impression that most 4K media released to the public would be available via digital and blu ray. i didn't know planet earth 2 was an exceptionNo I didn't. Stop saying that.

Yes, YOU DID! What, you can't take a punch? If you're happy that Scorpio will have UHD drive and you want something to say about that, YOU HAVE A SCORPIO THREAD FOR THAT. So, bump that thread. Good? Good.

I was kicking fun at Conduit, among a few others ;) As he seems really upset at the thought of a UHD-BD drive in a console.

Em....nope. You and similar like you trying to push UHD like next-big thing and because lack of UHD in PS4/Pro hoping that Xbone will turn the tide with that. You should go back to reality and realize UHD is bigfuckingnothing.gif

Damn you. I can't imagine how good the damn Mountains episode is gonna look ; ;

MS really did a good job with the One S because it's practically the cheapest 4K BR player on the market from what I've seen. Don't wanna wait till Black Friday but don't wanna pay more than 200 bucks or so :| decisions, decisions.

pretty sure most new releases aren't available in 4k digitally for a while
this would in turn mean the most accessible way for consumers to watch 4K is via 4K blu ray then yeah?
Yes, YOU DID!
No I didn't. Stop saying that. What exactly are you even doing here?

I disliked being called a troll because I'm not one. Simple as that. I'll tell you as many fucking times as you want me to: I bumped this thread to highlight the fact that scorpio will have it because in my opinion that makes the decision not to have in the pro look worse.

It is still an non issue for me. I still can't walk into a shop and buy a 4K Bluray. A lot of places are reluctant to stock Bluray's let alone 4K versions.

Looking on Amazon UK and the selection is really limited. I might consider 3 movies and very few there are up and coming releases. Then there is the price €25-€30 for a movie is outrageous. I think Sony is correct to wait until a PS5 before adding a 4K player.

Ask that yourself first.
me? I've been having discussions with other gaffers here. There I asked myself, now I'm asking you, what are you doing here? All I've seen is you coming to pick a fight with me and not contributing to the thread at all and if you say there is nothing left to contribute then why are you here? Other than to pick a fight with me and what fucking good is that? THAT might as well be the trolling and shitposting.

I haven't claimed or implied that it'll sway the tide in XB1 favour. I've even expressed a few pages ago that streaming will keep stay the major content provider: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=231958798&postcount=5318

I also totally bought UHD-BD movies to help Microsoft dominate

This is kinda how I see it. Where I work (Walmart) we usually only have blurays for new (er) releases and then when we get new stuff the DVDS might stay and blurays are sent away. Very few movies seem to even get 4k versions.

And as for me, most movies I watch once and I'm good on that. Not many movies I like enough to own. So I can wait for 4k to become a new standard. PS5 will surely have it by then.

Me? I'm just trying to say that UHD isbigfuckingnothing.gif. THAT's a fact.
It's not a fact, it's an opinion. The divide on that and longevity of this thread is proof of that.

And you've contributed with what? Picking a fight with me and insulting me nonstop, how is that any fucking better dude?

Not only that but you kept saying scorpio has nothing to do with this thread, by that logic neither would the xbone s even though the xbox has been mentioned ever since literally the first goddamn page

It's a fact
no it's not a fact and like I just told you the divide in opinion and longevity of this thread is proof of that
and it's not big as you want it to be and hoping that Xbone will turn the tide with UHD.
I don't see xbone turning the tide with anything but as a consumer I am disappointed my console of choice doesn't have it. You clearly don't give a shit that it doesn't but that doesn't mean you have to be a dick about it dude

Is there really anyone who is opposed to their being a UHD-BD drive, though, or is that just a straw man constructed to be picked apart when the moment is right? Unless Sony abandons physical media entirely there is almost certain to be a PlayStation that includes the drive at some point. Presumably that time will be when a new generation begins and games can be produced that take advantage of the medium's additional capacity.

That was one of the reasons why it was a big deal for the PS3. No multi-disc games, among other benefits.

Shit, they should've dropped the HDD to 500GB. Give it even more power, silly Sony.

That argument ignores the fact that the HDD is used to store games, and it is therefore quite clearly gaming related.

I've seen some confusion about new release titles on digital in 4k so I wanted to point a few things out.

If you want to watch a new movie in 4k digitally, you have to buy it for full price to STREAM it, which kind of negates the point of UHD. If you want to stream a new 4k movie that you pay 30+ dollars for with HDR you are shit out of luck unless you own an LG or Vizio TV because 4k HDR streaming of new releases is limited to dolby vision via Vudu. If you do have an lg or vizio, the vudu stream quality is still nowhere near UHD blu ray.

So, the only way to take advantage of a nice $1000+ 4k hdr tv is UHD Blu Ray. You couldn't even pirate rips of the discs if you were into that, because rips of the discs don't exist.

Edit: so to be clear, outside of UHD blu ray, the only content that takes full advantage of a nice 4k HDR display is store demos downloaded onto a usb stick/external hdd

Every time I see this thread bump I'm wondering if they are pushing a firmware update to support 4k BluRay, haha.

(I know it's not doable, but it's still what goes through my mind)

StudioTan

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
I was in best buy the other day and say how abysmal the 4k selection was. I think streaming is just to big Now physical movies are dying.

Because the 4k movie selection on Netflix is just so amazing right?

This is one of the stupidest comments in the thread. UHD is called ULTRA HIGH DEFINITION aka 4K. UHD-BD or UHD Blu-ray is the new disc format. Also, it won't turn any tide in the console war. It is showing extreme lack of foresight on Sony's part that their competitors are selling their own developed format on their consoles and Sony doesn't. UHD Discs aren't nothing for 4K tv owners. They are in fact the only non-Netflix shows or Amazon shows way to watch quality 4K and HDR content. Unless you prefer pirating ripped 4K movies. Very few to no other options exist. If you don't care and think its nothing, move on then.

Same here. No interest in the Xbox. I won't buy a game for it. Would have bought a Pro. Is Xbox still the cheapest UHD Blu-ray player available?

Pretty much. Newer players slightly better but none will be upgrades like Xbox One. Can get it for even cheaper than $199 these days, bluetooth controller.

i doubt i'll be buying many UHD, but with every format there's always a few things that I would like to own digitally in the best format available so I appreciate the option. Getting Planet Earth II 4K with HDR yesterday made me very glad for the player in the XB1S. It is glorious.

There will always be those who wish to take advantage of, and benefit from UHD and physical media, and in that regard, and as I've said in the past, the Pro not having the UHD drive is unfortunate for those who would like to have it.

There is no disputing that it's unfortunate for those people.

I don't really think there's much else to say beyond that at this point. Sony has done extensive market research to determine whether it made more sense otherwise, and I can vouch from our stores that we see very, very little movement or interest in the UHD push beyond the core enthusiasts, which seem to become an increasingly dying breed on the physical movie side.

Where it will go from there, we'll have to see how it pans out, and maybe the next generation of consoles will help make it standard so it will create a greater demand, or standardization of the format, but I doubt it.

It's a fact. UHD is not big thing. Can you show some sales statistics how UHD is big? You won't find any.

What qualifies as big to you? UHD TVs had significant growth over last year. Amazon, Netflix, and Vudu are expanding their UHD content. Consoles are pushing UHD too. UHD Blu rays exceeded their sales expectations and shelf space is increasing at Best Buy, Target, Wal Mart and other places, not remaining static or shrinking. UHD is growing just fine and is anything but nothing or no big deal.
