Phil spencer's interview with The Guardian on Project Scorpio

It's all part of the plan. Insinuate $499, then drop $399 bomb at E3.
I still think it shouldn't be more than $349 with that Jaguar.

See... We keep talking about Phil insinuating $499, but has he really done that at all? Didn't we just randomly grab that price point out of thin air and then start swearing by it once DF mentioned the same estimate?

No. Look at PS3 launch and Xbox One. Price might be the most important thing to many customers. Also Xbox lineup currently simply can't compete with PS4's. Maybe E3 can change that a bit but I doubt it.

I think they know they have to impress, and they're certainly in a position to. Price is definitely king at this point, so I feel they're going to go $399 and a blowout of games at E3 and a simple, clear marketing strategy. I also feel they will have some sort of positioning for Scorpio that will paint it as the definitive console. Some sort of
special sauce.

Conversely, I think Sony's in a position to show off some amazing announced and unannounced games, without having to squeeze in any console stuff and also with more close-in release dates (unless it's firmware updates / bigger HDD options), so this E3 will be interesting to say the least.

Plus the mainboard, which may need more layers because of the wider bus
and the yields at that clockspeed won't be great at all, at least that's nothing you assume

the mainboard is 8 layer (the one in the devkits at least with 24GB of Ram, could maybe go down to 6 for mass production). that was already mentioned by Microsoft
afaik the original Xbox One was also 6 or 8? (but i'm totally not sure about that!)
Ps4 Pro mainboard layer is not know. Sony sadly does not share these kind of details

clockspeeds are not really a factor when it comes to yield rates
you could always just increase the voltage to hit your clockspeed target
but you can't and don't want to go over a certain voltage level. that is a limiting factor, too

Not to be to patronising, but anyone thinking Microsoft are talking about premium and high end to engineer a mic drop moment...don't know how businesses work. Especially businesses like Microsoft.

The language they are using is to temper expectations and soften the blow. And that's because they know the price point they're going to suggest is something the market isn't accustomed to (not that it's an outrageous price for what you get).

Remember this isn't a PS3 situation. This is a trade up.

EDIT: I will say I'm pretty confident, but I could definitely still be wrong.

You weren't wrong, very laidback interview.

So at 09.35 Phil mentions visiting Rare and seeing what they're working on now since Sea Of Thieves has been announced, what game is he talking about that's unannounced?

Pretty sure he misspoke and ment unreleased.

On the other hand they could be talking it up for reasons mentioned like a mic drop moment, it's logical to presume the narrative because they are 1 year later than a PS4 Pro which will be $350 probably by the fall so anything that makes a $399 console sound premium and a bargain would be the narrative for a good sell.

Can't believe they haven't tried this IP again. That's your missing action adventure hole. Cyberpunk becoming quite popular again, female lead. 3rd person. Reimagine Perfect Dark. It would be refreshing for Xbox.
Yeah I'd love that. New Joanna look for the new generations, nice curvy body but hips instead of just top heavy, sexy english accent, flirty, sultry, yet serious and professional. Lots of hightech gear, cyberpunk as you say, AAA motion capture and facial animations, serious story, dark world, a solid foundation for the future.. Yup yup it could be perfect.

Darker than Perfect.

Im amazing with new game titles

Some companies cant tell the difference between a game that was bad and an IP thats bad. PDZ wasnt a bad IP, it had one bad launch game and they assumed was a bad IP.

The problem is Perfect Dark has never been a blockbuster franchise. So like, yeah you could make a great cyberpunk FPS with a female lead and a suitcase gun, but why not just make a new franchise rather than tying a AAA budget to 2 games that few people care about anymore?

It's 399. They are trying to manufacture a mic drop moment. Nothing in there is worth more than 399.

Is it really a mic drop? They waited a year longer than the Pro so obviously they would have better parts/price per manufacture.

I'm expecting $499. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it's $399.

I'm hoping I can get a pre-order in when it goes live.

I actually think people are underestimating it. I think the demand is huge and it'll do better sales then expected.

I agree with you. I think that many people are looking at the PRO and thinking that by the time Scorpio does come out it will be more expensive than the PRO and the PRO did not light the world on fire. The key difference is that MS is going to market the hell out of the Scorpio, whereas Sony did not spend a dime promoting the PRO to the casual consumer.

MS is going to blast the media with Scorpio and it is going to be plastered with 4k this, 4k that and some impressive looking games. They will not hesitate to let the general public know where to play the best version of 3rd party games. MS as a company is making a HUGE investment and I doubt they are going to be given peanuts to use for marketing.

With that said, I doubt it will be the best selling console, even MS expects that the Xbox One S for them will be the best seller, but I think, like the person that I quoted that it will sell very well.

The vast majority of scorpio sales are going to the same people who buy elite controllers. Why would MS give a discount on hardware to people who are already in the ecosystem and are already proven to pay premium prices?

Anyone who thinks $399 is deluding themselves. It will be $499.

I dont get how people can hear him go on about "premium" hardware and expect anything less than the Bone's original price.

Microsoft just has to figure out how much money they're willing to lose for how long. I can't even remember the last time a console was sold out of the gate with an actual profit margin. Maybe the Wii?

Is it really?
Doing DF article spec reveal instead of hosting special event; smallest E3 booth this year.
I see Xbox executives very passionate about Scorpio on social network doing free marketing, is big daddy MS corps who pay the bill fully on board?

Hosting a special event probably would have hurt the reveal more than help. See the PS4 Pro. Sony spent 45 minutes explaining something nobody can see through a stream and was really only for the press. The DF reveal was handled very well.

Here is a video interview also with Xbox On. Abit more laidback offcourse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPinUdJZ2Ko

That was pretty good. I think the most interesting part is when the person interviewing Phil asked him about why people should go out and pre-order a Scorpio and Phil said that he mainly tells people to wait until you see the games and if the games are there that they want then pre-order it....that it is about the games, because that is important. I think that is very telling for someone in his position. To actually tell people to hold on until you see the games and then if you are compelled enough to pre-order, then pre order it.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
MS learned their lesson about pricing a console at $499....I hope. They'd be lucky to sell 12 at that price.

It mostly depends on how it lands. Some people will be really impressed with a 399 announcement opposed to 499. Might be enough to become a prevailing opinion. After that... hard to say how that translates to actual market performance.

So is it really a mic drop? For some people, it definitely will be. For sony, they took 399 all the way home because they had their competitor announcing 499 at about the same time. That's going to be a little hard to replicate.

Twas sarcasm ;)

Well. Did you like the joke or not?

You must not understand how much money it takes to do the R&D and everything involved making a new console. If the higher ups at MS were not fully on board, it would of never been given the green light to begin with. You don't do what they are doing without the higher ups being on-board. Right now, they are getting a ton of free press, but once this machine is out and going into the holidays, you are going to see it as much as you saw Xbox One S commercials last holiday.

IDK about that. He said he was seeing their game that was unannounced and talked about a trust relationship for them not to ask him about unannounced stuff. Like price.

Regardless of whether he misspoke or not, it blows my mind that it went completely over the head of the idiot next to him. What a worthless interviewer.

They'll either mic drop it at $399 or go as high as $449. There is no way they make the $499 mistake again.

Can we try to stop calling $399 a mic drop moment? It wouldn't be. It sounds like a natural evolution of what Sony did with the pro. 12 months on with more ram and a highly clicked but similar size APU. It screams $399

This premium talk is all MS bullshit. It isn't a magical 4k/60 PC ultra box even though MS always seem to talk about Scorpio like that (indirectly - things like 'well you could spend thousands on a Titan SLI setup..) and it isn't going to cost $500

True. It could go from "OMG $399! But for all that power it's such amazing value!!1!" Through to "$399 huh? Wel why're a year late to 4k sand it seems a bit better than pro so that's an ok price"

Just reading any Scorpio thread on gaf though (yes I know, not representarive), that MS positioning and 'premium' wording seems to be getting traction. I don't understand personally but if they do announce $399 it'll be a noisy thread

He keeps on talking about a premium price which to me suggests that it will be the most expensive console that we've seen in some time.

I'm expecting $450 minimum.
Xbox One launch at $499.99 isn't even four years in the past yet. They are talking this thing up in a way designed to make $399.99 come off as a surprise (basically what was said earlier in the thread).

With the PS4 bundles that will be available, and more Switch units getting pushed to retail, $499.99 would be an awkward position this holiday. I am a bit hesitant to accept the notion that they have learned absolutely nothing over the past three and a half years.
