Digital Board Games Thread: Async Multiplatform Meeples

Hail to the KING baby
I picked it up. Digidiced is a really solid dev. Looking forward to finally learning this game as I'd rarely get a chance to play it IRL (all the heavy games I play with game group and friends/family are more Ameritrash).

It is my favorite board game. I might have to pick up this digital version, but I'll probably get less chance to play it than I'd like

Will have a look! How's the learning curve and length of a game?
It's a bit intimidating.
The tutorials are good in that they explain the interface and what the various actions do.
What's harder is knowing _what_ to do and whether it will screw up the rest of the game. Once I get to know the game better it should get easier.
Some of th people on BGG claim a game versus the Easy AI will take 20-30 mins. That will propbably vary depending on how used to it you are. There's complaints that the 15 sec AI is taking a lot longer on its turns. There's an auto-skip feature for async based on whether you want to convert power to vps (I think).
The main thing will be whether the multiplayer has a 24 hour turn limit, which killed lots of Patchwork games.

checking out this terra mystica thing, holy fuck this seems really complicated

It looks really big and complicated but it's pretty simple actually. You just have to learn each function individually first and ignore the character power until later. It's more of a engine building game than a worker placement imo.

1. Building placement and upgrades and benefit. Basically, each building give you different resources during income phase e.g. gold, magic, worker. Stronghold usually give you a powerful ability or one off benefit. Cathedal/Church or whatever it's called give you blessing from the gods (which grant you several things to choose from).
2. Terra-forming or shovel. So you can change the tile to suit your clan.
3. Magic. How magic circulate between three bowls and how you can move them.
4. Priest and the cult track. Your position on the cult track usually give you bonus for each round and moving up the track allow you to circulate your magic.

Those are four fundamental ideas imo. The rest you can pick up along the way. I don't have the app yet but the boardgame version does a good job on the board itself to teach you this.

Then different race has different benefit, that you have to learn what each one give and take. Like how the yellow dude not having shovel and only jump using magic carpet. The fish dude use more resources to place/upgrade building but he get more benefit from them iirc. The magician who get two blessings for each church built. Everyone is different in this game. Just take your time and learn them as you go along.

After two games even the girl in my group who hate heavy game can smoothly play TM and stop feeling that it's complicated.

Feel free to drop a question tho.

The Onirim app is amazing. I am so addicted

What's your win rate? I was really excited to win 5/6 once I figured out most of the rules but now hovering around 50%. Definitely a tough/satisfying game to win although sometimes you just get completely screwed/blessed by the cards.

I'm about 50%. Very solid little app but it badly needs some expansions.

I think for Terra Mystica I'd need to know what a good first few moves should be. In my first game I've taken an action in the second turn, and haven't enough workers for other actions. I can use a power, but I think my III bowl is empty so I'll permanently 'burn' purple to do anything there. After that my only other option is to pass so I'm thinking I've made some bad choices. I do have a contiguous area of 4 tiles.

I feel like I've got a couple of begging cards in Agricola :D

Maybe I'll watch some videos of real games rather than explainers.

There are extensive strategy threads on BGG, but the key is deciding which faction to pick based on the scoring conditions (and other players' selections) and then maximizing points based on that faction's strengths. Building a first turn temple is the best option for many boards/factions, but some need to rush strongholds (in the first two turns out so). The tactical turn to turn play thereafter isn't nearly as involved as figuring out the overall strategy when selecting a faction.

It's really low right now, need to figure out how to better deal with back to back nightmares

Is the app version of Terra Mystica got the town rule wrong for faction like Dwarves? I thought I could form a town using tunnel.

Then again I never truly know if I get the rules absolutely correct.

I haven't tried multi-player yet but having a bit of fun with bots already.

Tunnels aren't meant to form towns. They only exist during/affect terraform/build actions. Other "teleportation" effects function the same way (apart from 1 river space for Mermaids, but that's an explicit special ability).

Thanks for clarification :)

Good news! Just got a reply from Playdek:

Hi,

We're currently working on updates to several of our apps to address this issue, starting with Lords of Waterdeep.

Thanks for your patience,
Playdek

Waterdeep is the only app I'd miss in the transition, so that's great news. Hopefully there aren't any insurmountable licensing hurdles.

The digital adaptation of the board game Tokaido is on sale for $3.99, normally $6.99.

That's a 43% discount after just 5 weeks on the App Store. This trend is becoming too common, some games are going on sale within two weeks of release! This is a self-perpetuating cycle where people wait to buy a game knowing it will go on sale quickly and games go on sale quickly because nobody's buying them.

However Tokaido unfortunately did not receive the praise it would have needed to justify this price.

There are lots of board games on sale on iOS right now:

Carcassonne 4.99 instead 9.99
Lost Cities 1.99 instead 3.99
Agricola 2Player 2.99 instead of 4.99 (I think)
Le Havre

Asmodee / Days of Wonder games are still on sale as well.

Just bought and played a few games of Onirim

Awesome solitaire card game. Can be completed in 10 minutes, just the game to be play waiting in line or on public transport.

I've got the physical version too and the app solves the biggest problem: constant need to shuffle the deck.

oh wow Terra Mystica is $10 on google play store. Looks interesting tho I might get although I just know I'll be crazy lost

I don't really play much board games. close I've been is Lanterns (which is good fun).

also play a lot of CCGs but dont think they count (although they feel strongly related)

Friend code on RFTG is 1F5YZ222 if anyone would be kind enough to add me and invite me to games. :)

This will be my first time playing the game and I'll be learning the game first so as to avoid taking long turns. But once I familiarize and play a couple games today, I would love to play with you guys. :)

What's up with the friend codes on RFTG?

It's basically just away to add people permanently to a friends list that you can then play async games with. New update has badges and notifications too so looks like they're all set on the async front.

My RFTG friend code is CXE1KHVV.

Played the tutorial and a game yesterday. I must say, I have no idea what I was doing. LOL. I didn't know what I should be aiming for. Maybe a couple more games will help, but, so far, it just didn't click for me.

Race is definitely one of those games you have to play like 5-10 times before you really get it. I'd just bang out a few games against the AI on Easy then Medium to learn some of the strategies. 2p Advanced is best.

The good thing about the app is that I get to try out the game before getting the physical one. Now I know that this is a game my wife won't enjoy so I'll just stick with the app.

When you guys play async game, do you have to wait long time for a turn? I'm refraining from playing online mostly because I'm usually pretty busy during weekdays. I'm afraid that I'd slow the game down to the point where it no longer fun for other people.

It wouldn't affect me if players could only take their turns at certain times of the day or week.
OTOH some games are not very tolerant of long gaps between turns (Digidiced: Patchwork, Terra Mystica and the guys behind Eclipse and Neuroshima Hex), and kill games after a few days or less.
playdek and Coding monkeys are good, not sure how long a RFTG game survives yet.

Yeah it seems like RFTG has no timer so might work well for you. Honestly outside of a game timing out I don't care remotely how long people take to do their turns as long as it's at least a few times a week. More interested in just actually getting games going since I have a big catalog of games I'd like to play.

proud of his butz
In the alpha for Faeria on iPhone and it plays really well. Mostly been playing the missions and just started trying their draft mode against CPUs. Don't think multiplayer is async, but it sort of feels like it could be.

So Dice Tower apparently teased a Marvel: Legendary app on tablets. Oh my. If that's a legit app and not just a randomizer, it could turn into my favorite app ever.

In the RFTG app, is anyone else having trouble adding friends? I'm on iOS.

Hmm no have managed to add everyone I tried.
