Phil Spencer: We're upping our investment with first party and committed to innovate

Lol some people think that an initiative to reinvest in 1st party means that two months later you would see all the fruits of that labor already?

That's not how any of this works haha.

Microsoft were talking up investing 1bn dollars into first party games back in 2013.

It's been 4 years.

No new studios founded that survived.

No new AAA IPs that justified a sequel.

What are they doing? It's simply bizarre that they make these claims time and again of investing in first party games, and yet their stable of first party studios has only shrunk in size, and so has their output.

honestly I think this is the worst show ever. for MS. its not even funny to laugh at. its just boring.

not a single new game? really ? Rare been working on this stupid pirate game that look like shit for 3 years now ? wtf is the studio doing there?

horrible effort. oh. and 500$....

not sure if I want to spend that much to play the most powerful console multiplatform. or wait few months and get it for 400$ when it bomba like the xbox one at early release.

Times like this make me wonder why they didn't just try and keep Molyneux and revamp Lionhead, and/or let them attempt a new IP. He got a lot of shit, but he always made an effort at making the Fable titles fresh, charming and funny. The renaissance seems to be working for Rare: Sea of Thieves looks fantastic.

Now, Turn 10, Microsoft's last, best studio, are being tasked with shouldering their entire first party movement, particularly now that the Halo/Gears IP are going through transition stages (of which they might not survive).

Phil on ROTR 2015 exclusivity deal - I don't like these kinds of deals, we won't be doing this from now on, there are better investments
E3 2016 - Dead Rising 4 announced with a similar deal
E3 2017 - Showcases similar deals for 9 games

He's totally gonna invest more in first party...

When were Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves and State of Decay announced? Yeah.

MS are no better than Sony when it comes to this stuff, meaning that it's pretty likely that they've got jack shit they are actually ready to show, other than what we saw. Expect the next big unannounced Xbox game to be released early 2020, if we're lucky.

Obviously they're strategy has changed.

So are you saying you think they won't have any more first party games after state of emergency?

I've lost my faith in Phil. They're the only one launching a new console later this year, and there's a decent chance they'll have the worst E3 showing. Unacceptable.

Oh well, at least Ninty and Sony are killing it lately.

isn't the idea that around the time they took the initiative to reinvest in the xbox brand by creating the scorpio they would in tandem reinvest in first party and that this E3 when they unveil the XboX they would also show the fruits of the software labor? not that they literally only thought to start to reinvest in first party two months ago.

No, but if they're not ready to even show trailers for the games they have in the pipeline, that means they're far out.

This isn't our first rodeo:
Phil Spencer said:
My Strategy is more around our own first party franchises, and investing in franchises that we own, and probably fewer exclusive deals for third party content. I want to have strong third party relations, but paying for many third party exclusives isn't our long term strategy.

This year, the fact that we're shipping Halo 5, Gears of War, Forza 6, Fable, we can only do that and build that best line-up we've ever seen really on the back of franchises that we own. It's great to have Tomb Raider as part of our line-up, but investing in first party, you'll see more of that at gamescom next week, is really core to our strategy.
We really should have seen some new AAA first party title this E3 if they started investing two years ago.

he might've been telling the truth, but we wont see those fruits for 2 or 3 years. wouldnt we of heard about some acquisitions of studios or watnot though?

This is an unwinnable situation for the Xbox division.

A.

CAUSE: They have new IPs in development, but they aren't at stage to be shown off. So they announce them with CG trailers.

EFFECT: Some forum-goers cites no lessons learned from previous mistakes; can't be sure if games won't be cancelled; fake hype generators with no substance.

B.

CAUSE: They have new IPs in development, but are trying to avoid previous mistakes. So they hold off on announcing them until they're in a place to be shown.

EFFECT: Some forum-goers jump into a thread like this with reactionary posts because games haven't materialized on a relatively short turn around.

Seriously, what exactly is supposed to be done here? How do you produce credible first party experiences in less than a year (Note, it's been less than 2 months since the OP article went live)? Does progress manifest itself instantaneously? Does Microsoft's assumed trajectory down the road to Games-as-a-service not factor into this discussion at all.

It's like there's no room for any nuance here.

Maybe they can't get the funding from Satya to invest.

Nah, this wasn't the showing that I feel they needed. They needed clear-cut victories and came up short, though it wasn't a horrible conference. That price tag is extra wtf. Too many of the games shown will be available on other platforms. I don't see them swaying many away from other consoles with what they showed. But I could be wrong.

Friend of mine said before the show, the narrative will be wait till E3 2018 after today. It was wait till E3 this year and the one before that too. When he said 22 exclusive games I got excited but when I saw reveal after reveal a part of me thinks Phil Spencer is taking the piss.

All due respect to the indies but I honestly didn't expect so many of them and with deals to launch first on Xbox. I mean, is that what you call investment?

The very few games they announced last year, one being State of Decay 2, we have waited a whole year to see gameplay of that and it looked rough, Crackdown we have waited longer and that looked rough too and then...another Forza game.

Sounds bad but when he was rambling on before Biowares reveal I couldn't bare to listen to him any longer. Maybe E3 2018 will bring something that some of us want them to do but I have no faith or time for this fella anymore, not knocking anyone who does or loved today's show btw, each to their own.

Oh give me a break. People were saying this in relation to this e3, now we've gotta wait three more years?!

So for the people who kept saying: "This year is going to be the year that shows Phil's direction on first party".

There it is.

That would've been true with not for the fact that the majority of their first party showing this E3 was at the very least already announced for a year.

Yeah, Sea of Thieves and Crackdown 3 are games we've known about for YEARS. Hell, the latter we knew about at E3 2014.

State of Decay 2 is a game we've also known about for a while, so no, they could have shown something to prove their commitment to first party.

If I was someone who was excited for the Xbox One X I'd be pissed by what they just showed.

Pretty much how I feel, actually.

I didn't get excited, admittedly, but I let myself become hopeful, and feel like a chump for it.

MS do not care about games beyond getting the most profit back on the minimum amount of investment. They don't care about the artist nature of the medium, of expanding their audience into less profitable, but more diverse and worldwide focusing directions, and they don't care about their own output.

Honestly this just reaffirms my opinion that MS are fundamentally bad for the industry, and do more to perpetuate anti consumerist practices, toxic communities and a generally dumbing down of games as an artistic for of entertainment, and that we'll all be better of if they just game up on gaming full stop.

There has been no new major investment in first party. If it is ever going to happen, it hasn't happened yet.

I took it as investing in their franchises, not just increasing their studio count, quite the contrary for what Phil said he wants to keep 1st party studios at a minimum and only increase when it's guaranteed to work.

So for investments he is probably talking about unannounced partnerships.

I'm actually more than ok with that, just wished it showed something already XD

It's clear where most if their budget goes to (Halo, Gears, Forza).

Forza 7 looked a generation ahead of their other exclusives.

So during Spencers reign he has managed to

Kill off Xbox exclusives
Cancel first party titles
Promise more than they can deliver
Announce consoles at higher price than people are willing to pay
Overhype and Botch E3
Sign off on some of the most cringe PR/Advertising messaging

I'm getting the feeling that a lot of execs at Xbox are just way too comfortable in their jobs and not hungry enough for success compared to the aggressiveness shown by Sony.

C'mon dude ... dude no one would be making games if it weren't for money at the end of the day.

Right. I'm saying that really hasn't happened. When this slate of games release they will have replacements to announce, but the number or scope of games they are involved with, as of now, isn't really going up.

Sometimes, I kind of do wish MS would bow out of the industry, so then folks would understand the true meaning of monopoly.

You never appreciate what you have until it is gone.
