Mr Plinkett reviews Ghostbusters (2016)

I haven't watched it, but this makes me sad. The teaser was Plinketty enough for me, sad to hear it's not the Plinkett I love. Hopefully I'll still like it though. Waiting to watch it with my husband tomorrow night.

Basically it's Plinkett with the critique and humor without the kidnapped hooker, dead wife jokes, and kidnapped girls in the basement.

If that's your cup of tea, ehh.

I prefer this plinket

Bout to strap in and watch an hour long review of a movie I have never watched of a series I have never watched

Tip...this one is fine to start with but the best way to start is to watch the prequel reviews in order...then go to the Star Trek ones

But these are long so perhaps this is the best one to start with

No murdering prostitutes in his basement in this one

It's got the Plinkett edge but with less live action stuff. It's not to the point of (literally) shitting on JJ Abrams and George Lucas levels of Plinkett.

The Duchamp's Fountain reference at :56 was kind of amazing after the Jackson Pollock in a realism exhibit joke. I thought the review was mediocre until #6. Then it was great.

Oh ok. As long as it still has Plinkett humor, I can live without the lore. Many of his reviews don't really have much lore in them anyway.

Thanks for the reassurance. Still anxiously awaiting watching this tomorrow. :)

You can always create your own threads too you know? We've had threads before talking about the GB2016 and the connection to the alt-right.

I never did it because I thought creating a thread to vent my own personal disdain over the state of discourse would be a little too self aggrandizing. I didn't expect so many people to latch on to my comment here. Sorry again.

This was a pretty good review that went over the tone, timing, and pacing. Really broke down why the film doesn't work.

the first thing I ask when I go to a restaurant is "do you have coke or pepsi products" so when they mention "it isn't coke" I immediately thought it must be a pepsi product. Sony must've been sweating.

I don't entirely agree with that, this is just closer in tone with the Titanic video. Less budget but more informative but still funny.

Anyway I finished it, it's not the best plinket review but masterful compared to tfa. I think it's better they waited to make this while most of the drama has died down (with this specific movie I mean). Honestly it makes me want to rewatch the original, that's a good sign.

I really don't know if it was the director or the actors that were most to blame for the movie.
Sounds like the director was incompetent and ineffectual and couldn't control his actors.
And the actors themselves hadn't got a clue what to do and were basically told to improv every scene.

It makes everyone look bad.

Great review IMO and breaks down why it's a terrible movie, as someone who saw it day 1 in theaters

It's a lot worse than people claim. I think the crazy MRA types hating it lead to people being soft on what is otherwise an unfunny hollywood reboot every bit as bad as the other unfunny hollywood reboots everyone already hates

As I said in the RLM thread, this is fine, as such things go, but one wonders why this video particularly needs to exist and why, other than dinero, it needed to be a Plinkett video, given the Plinketty humor is largely absent from it.

I'd say that's pretty valid, maybe should have started a new series that critically critiques movies in a more professional manner? Then again, RLM is anti-professional in presentation.

Regardless the video is a net positive, it nicely puts together legit critiques both direct "wow that's bad" and constructive "here is how I would do it".

ProTip:

How to participate in this thread: watch the review and talk about it.

How to get banned from the forum: preemptively shit on the thread because it exists, derail the thread by talking about how you're not going to watch the review in question, dive head first into meta commentary, etc.

We have really lowered the bar for "protip" ;)

Spy was a surprisingly good movie. Statham was especially great. Really disappointing that Ghostbusters 2016 was such a misfire from Feig.

I had high hopes for Ghostbusters 2016 after seeing Spy too.

Doubt any of the RLM guys have any kind of passion towards the Tranformers franchise as a whole.

I wouldn't be surprised. Even as a 80s kid who owned dozens of Transformers, I never cared for the show.

A Plinkett review of the Bayformers series would go something like this:

Plinkett: "Remember when Transformers was good?"

*Cut to random clip from the shitty 80s TV series*

Plinkett: "oh"

The first 15 minutes were so pointless, but the actual analysis of the film is fine. I'm glad they mostly just left the controversy behind, although I still think this is a dead horse that's been beaten so much that it's already turned into glue.

any of the lore had to do with Jessi, Mike's girlfriend who all but disappeared from any of the other video series they do because of what likely of a portion of the fanbase that was really creepy towards her, so I can see why he'd stop it.

this isn't that dead of a horse for everyone though, let's get that out of the way. Besides people knowing the movie sucks many may have not seen it and aren't watching/reading other movie personalities deconstructing everything. Not everyone is keeping up with all of the behind the scenes analysis from sites and other youtube channels.

It seems like the mostly was the fault of a director not doing enough directing, plus a script that mostly missed the point

the format.

Half in the Bag= they discuss their thoughts on recent films right after watching them

Previously Recorded= video game reviews

Best of the Worst/Wheel of the Worst= watching obscure bad movies/videos

Re:View= watching films from years before that both of the hosts have seen and watching again, then discussing their overall thoughts over certain scenes.

There isn't really another format for this more thorough breakdown from the video series they have. He seems to have toned down the more weird humor because I can only assume they knew it'd be problematic due to the baggage that comes with this film and didn't want to deal with it.

Pretty sure that's deliberate and if the next plinkett review is for something like the robocop reboot they'll double down on the dark humor. This plinkett review had less dark comedy on average then any random hitb or botw.

I can understand that, wasn't trying to be an asshole, lol.

Anyway on topic, the editing is as sharp as the older ones mocking George Lucas. The part about Amy Pascal meddling in the movie, as typical corporate executives are known to do, especially in Hollywood.

Yeah, that stuff was getting old by the time of the AOTC review.

Outside of some, off-color humor, the video does a good job laying out exactly why GB16 didn't hit the highs of the original.

Eh. I thought the film was fine, and quite funny at points. I should watch the video at least to know where the internet zeitgeist revolving around this film is going to shift, because the moment someone popular and well respected does a video about a thing, their opinion suddenly becomes a lot of other people's opinions, which might be an interesting topic for a thread on it's own since it's not just about me venting disdain over something.

something about the way he looks into the camera
If he was holding a mic, I feel like he'd drop it and walk out.

I thought the film was enjoyable enough, but not everything needs to be painted in such cynical tones. I'm sure there are TONS of people who wanted RLM to bash this film for petty reasons. But there are also tons of people, indicated by this very thread, that are interested in their discourse on this film.

No matter how many times I see it, Akroyd's savaging of Feig will never not be an "OH GOD DAMN" moment.

I'd never seen that before but I had to pause the video.

The way he fucking looks at the camera like he knows Feig is watching right this second, with this ridiculous evil glare is just amazing.

I think it's even funnier because that's on some random morning cooking show that I used to watch a lot of (sunday brunch?).

That stuff was always cringeworthy and makes it impossible to recommend or watch the videos with a lot of people.

I always loved the original Ghostbusters and its one of my favourite movies of all time but damn this review made me realize even more that its a really well crafted movie.

Yea the second half (when they actually start dissecting the film) is much better. It seems a bit meandering early on even if they had some good points about the product placement.

the first thing I ask when I go to a restaurant is "do you have coke or pepsi products" so when they mention "it isn't coke" I immediately thought it must be a pepsi product. Sony must've been sweating.
I just would have never imagined though that product placement might be that strict and exclusive in individual scenes.

Yeah the stuff you mentioned were always the worst parts of the Plinkett reviews

I think he could focus on how it's just pure cynical Hollywood at it's zenith and it gets progressively more cynical and wrote as it goes.

It always tickled my brain

But you are 100% correct that it made it hard to share the videos...other people didn't get it

Its okay...we are getting a rogue one eventually

hopefully

gotta say. watching this RN and came here to post this topic.

The new ghostbusters is serious cringe. This makes me hate it even more and everyone involved in Ghostbusters 2016.

you're never going to see two of those three again because both of the ladies that hung around the RLM gang have left due to one or another reason (one went to try and make it big in show biz, the other isn't showing up anymore but is still together with the gang)

That ended up being a lot better than I expected. No shitty commentary on "manufactured feminism", or low hanging fruit about the movie's awkward defensiveness towards obnoxious man-children.

I still find it super fucking weird that the movie tries to reframe Ghostbusters from being this blue-collar extermination business into being these... superhero government agents or some shit?

Just finished. It was a good insightful video.

I think they might have seen some of the fallout from the Scientist Man video and decided not to go down that route.

If thats the case, good on them.

Yeah the stuff you mentioned were always the worst parts of the Plinkett reviews

I always fast forward through those bits. Never got them, I guess they were supposed to lampoon something? But to me it just felt like the same disgusting low level humor that RLM in general likes to harp on. Which is probably why they are gone or toned down.

Nope. Going to have to disagree with that. Do you remember the Crystal Skull and Star Wars reviews? No HITB was ever as dark as those in terms of all the controversial content. Maybe BOTW but the (bad) VCR stuff lends itself to that kinda humor.

So that's why she disappeared? That's a damn shame. I believe she was in a few Best of the Worst's and her perspective as a woman lead to her asking a couple of legitimate questions about plotholes with female characters or writing that the guys never even thought of.

You can tell that the Plinkett reviews are really aided by Mike's interest. Like, it's obvious that he's a massive geek of Ghostbusters, Empire Strikes Back, and Star Trek. So, the Plinkett reviews on the failed successors are great. When he's obligated by the fans to make one, you get the bland Crystal Skull or Force Awakens reviews.

Cop dog is the best plinkett content on the site.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I forgot about that dance part. It's giving me Blues Brothers 2000 flashbacks.
Oh, God... make it stop.

thank god there were no prisonner hookers in the basement in this one.

I digress

It was a good review; Paul Feig should never direct another movie ever again

Setting aside that Mr. Plinkett kidnapping a woman and forcing her to hunt ghosts in his basement would be pretty in-character, for me, I just found that it lacked a lot of the good one-liners, clever editing, and use of clipart, hallucinatory SFX, and shock gags that made Plinkett funny in the first place. It's a decent take on why the movie stinks (that doesn't particularly differ from ground they covered in previous stuff they've done on it), but other than the mindblowing Papa John's/Coca Cola deep dive, it didn't offer much in the way of humor, for me.

the scientist man video I can guarantee you was done almost exclusively to troll people after the reaction of the half in the bag thoughts.

They just did 3-4 videos trolling fans with a transformers review.

Jessi's gone man

I know Jessi's gone from RLM, but I think someone confirmed she's still together with Mike so it makes sense she still hangs around with them, just not in RLM.

Oh that's right they did. They do have a bit of a trolling streak don't they?

I have to admit, I kept thinking they were actually going to make one for real this time... and nope.

It was beautiful.
