Plenty of people disagree with you. At best, the wording is dubious and left up to interpretation.

I'd love to be incorrect. Really, I would. I'll happily eat crow for this.

At this point I'm not sure what's going on, but it doesn't look good.

I mean it's weird that people are jumping to interpret it as something fundamentally and massively different from the previous game. It doesn't even make sense! Why would you be able to replay a mission in a group but not at the start?

The game was announced with an expansion pass. Sure, there are free updates, but the mini and major expansions? You gotta pay for those. That is nothing new.

Nothing new, but it splits the fan base. We have MANY games doing free updates right now. That's smart, everyone plays all the content. One expansion/year I don't really mind. I would pay for that.

Destiny has a cod-like MP PvP mode which is really not that interesting anymore. Old habits regarding DLC. Not all that exciting new things for a sequel. I don't know how people are defending this game so hard.

I just think youre wrong about everything here lol. I'm not saying they don't have their reasons, I just think the reasons are bullshit, and easily solved. I know they are in fact, because the games industry at large has managed to not have this new a problem for years now.

I just don't agree with you. I feel like at best, this is patronising to players.

I really just want to try and be a voice of reason amidst people who are easily outraged by any and everything they hear about a game, regardless of it's grand relevance. I come to these forums every day and hear people spout the most toxic statements over the most minor grievances and if I can convince just a couple of people to think about what they're saying and take a rational stance instead of an entitled one, I'd feel a little bit better. I just get tired of the shit spewing over anything that doesn't line up with what some poster would have personally done with a game were they in charge of development. That's not just specific to Destiny.

You guys just gotta chill, that's all I'm trying to say. It ain't all doom and gloom like that, my guys. I'm not trying to offend or make anyone's opinions invalidated, but you gotta think about these things and how they ultimately affect your lives before you all go apeshit. I'm defending reasonable discussion more than I'm trying to defend Bungie specifically. I've got my grievances with certain game design decisions here and there, but I know I'm going to have fun regardless.

I had no intention of buying Destiny 2, but this rumor made me go through the hassle of reactivating my ancient battle.net account and buying the game.

Technically its true that the campaign is co op even if that mode is gated behind completing it once solo. That's fucked.

Also doesn't Like Smith say the only missions that are not co op are the first 2? Imma rewatch that vid because I'm 99% positive he said that.

I lean towards this being the case (I really really hope so). It just seems crazy to me that this big online game would be the first one from Bungie with no campaign co-op.

"Campaign (
16
Missions): This single-player set of story missions... Complete the campaign and you can return... and play them again."

Stolen from another poster.

I agree with you, it's stupid. And I hope it's not true.

During the reveal someone from ign asked if the campaign could be played through cooperatively, and the bungie rep (luke or deej?) Said "of course".

I expect the prologue to be solo, but the campaign to be fireteam friendly.

That doesn't refute the guide. From what the guide says, it certainly can be played cooperatively, but only after initial completion.

Hoping for clarification soon.

If true then i am out, It ruined Nioh when one of us had to do the mission first, The replay it in Co-op and then again if we wanted to do it through the yokai realm way with a companion.

Nothing more off putting then replaying the same mission over and over.

Let us do it at the same time if we want too.
Not to be rude but I dont think your going to enjoy destiny even if there was coop campaign. Destiny is all about replaying the campaign and strikes over and over again to find gear and level up for the raid/banner/trials.

lol why would they even consider something stupid like that?

going through the story missions TOGETHER was a big incentive.
unfortunately I have it preordered via PSN, I would cancel in a heartbeat.

the game is already a trainwreck before it is even released, can't even be sure that features from D1 are in D2, wtf

If our assunption is wrong I expect Bungie to step in and clear things up.

If we are right, they will keep silebt or play it of as a genius idea by them

It is now 100% proven that Destiny fans will defend anything Bungie does.

Generalizing people of the opposite opinion is pretty silly and quite childish.

I could see this being fine if it were done to respect the story in the sense that it's focused on the player.

We'll have to see when it launches.

I can't tell if you're trolling or genuinely convinced by this decision... if you are genuinely convinced, why? What is appealing to you about a single-player campaign that doesn't have an optional co-op component *on the first playthrough*?

I don't see what's wrong with this. Honestly, narrative heavy games almost always lose something when played cooperatively. This way, players will be able to enjoy the plot the first time around and then replay the missions with friends if they want to.

But Destiny was never narrative heavy and had no plot what so ever worth following. People want to play with friends, level and get gear.

I don't feel like this is a minor grievance though. A game with a marketing campaign literally focused on the idea of social play having a sneaky asterisk that says "oh, but you can't play the campaign co op right away" is super fucking sketchy.

Lego Worlds having an ugly app icon is Gaf outrage at its worst. This has some merit haha.

I guess, but its something they don't seem to mind. Every time a major expansion comes out, they make a "Collection" with everything for new people to join or old ones to jump back in.

It obviously has not hurt the franchise one bit. Like it or not.

Exactly the point of the outrage were it to be true. It would be a nonsensical design choice. However, if not true and we're all misinterpreting it, we can all eat crow happily.

This is Bungie we're talking about here. Folks can imagine them making such a dumb decision since they apt on such decisions.

What? Why? That makes no sense. You could play the exact same campaign regardless of if it's solo or co-op. This decision making someone go from not buying to buying means you clearly don't understand something.

I played the entirety of Destiny 1 by myself, fun with it and was expecting to repeat the experience. Never joined a fireteam or "group up with my buddies" since my friend list is empty anyway, but it's really bad if they took this out for the social folks.

I already bought the base game + season pass last night, here's hoping that gets fixed. Like I said, it doesn't affect me, but it's a bummer for everyone else.

Lol i think that poster has been living under a rock. 90% of posts on bungies forum are complaints or plz nerf this bungie posts.

Presumably, they will have made an effort to make the game fun when going through it solo. Destiny was a huge disappointment for me as a single player fps campaign, so I had written off Destiny 2 until these news.

Destiny isn't the game for you in the first place then. The whole game is about rerunning content over and over every week, the thrill of experiencing something new is not why people play it. Yea it's fun the first time around but those few hours amount to like 5% of the the total playtime of Destiny.

What the fuck? Why force people to play solo? Dumbest decision ever, if true. No idea how anyone could defend such a ridiculous decision.

Co-op was the least of D1's problems.

Honestly this just seems too dumb to be true. What possible reason is there for Bungie to do something like make the campaign solo only 1st time through?

It's coming across as misinformation that's being blown out of proportion, if it is true then it's crap.
Lame, stupid crap.

But I think the 1st couple of missions will be solo only and maybe a handful of other small missions too (like the subclass missions from TTK)

Any Destiny fans defending the idea of solo only 1st time through are dumb but equally dumb are the preposterous reactions to it.

This is certainly a stupid development if true. Unless this story has branching decisions out the wazoo there's nothing too personal about the campaign that would justify this not being in.

We can agree on this, man. For now I'll hop out and let the people this actually affects discuss it more since I'm kind of odd man out in my thinking. Not trying to change minds if it'll just start fights.

The quoted bit from the guide literally does not say that you can't play through the Campaign with others, only that you can play with others during your replays. The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

The IGN video seems like it is saying that though, but it's possible that it's just poorly worded.

You realize that you could still play D1 story missions without someone else right? Your argument makes no sense whatsoever. They removed an option to play with other people that you also didn't have to use and somehow this convinces you that I'll make the SP game more fun? Lol I don't even know what to respond to something like that

How odd, if they are pushing more story in the campaign maybe they thought co-op wasn't a good fit first time through.

I'm totally fine with this.

I plan on playing the campaign by myself to give it my full attention, and I know a bunch of my friends are going to be itching to join up and chat on launch day. Love them, but I like taking my time and listening to the dialogue.

I like the idea of walling off the campaign from the coop activities. I also like how this appears to build a consistent narrative where the story happens here, and the open world activities over here.

Yeah I hope they answer, doesn't seem like something worth dodging for just 3 days.

The line in the OP reads like it could be in regards to the heroic mode or daily/weekly playlist challenges, hopefully.

Bungie has doubled down and recognized the best part of Destiny was the co-op. I just can't believe they'd make any activity solo.

Perhaps it’ll be single player with multiplayer sections, like the opening mission in the beta. In order to create those moments, they’d have to restrict it to single player.

They can't be that stupid.

Do they expect us to play through the campaign 3x solo to (unlock each character) before we can group up with others?
If not and it's only the very first time, why are we even forced to do this shit?

Personally I always played story missions alone anyways. It's the rest of the game I need coop for from patrols to strikes to raids.

Like why would this mission state your firteam if it's not co op?

https://i.imgur.com/XKLIPHC.jpg

You can read the guide and like every mission after the first one says your and your fireteam. This thread legit just looks like random GAF outrage once again.

Edit: Looks like it's confirmed random GAF outrage lol

Thanks for sharing your perspective! Yeah, I think they have geared the campaign to be much friendlier towards solo players this time around.

I'd rather go back to D1 then, where there was no story to get in the way of having fun.

Bungie can't be so stupid to think millions of people buy their coop loot FPS for story. No way they're that dumb.
