And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
So bizarre that the most interesting looking game there was some third party Lego game.

I literally feel like I fell asleep after E3 last year, and just woke up, because absolutely nothing has changed or developed about this thing or its software. The party games all look the same, not one big development at all in a whole year. Feel like I just saw the same show twice.

Why the fuck do we get Mass Effect 3 but not Dead Space 3 from EA?

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Tech demos aren't games. Rubber duckies, you know. Aside from that, Pikmin and 2D Mario aren't exactly known for pushing the graphical boundary of the systems they're on. (Yes, Pikmin looked very nice.)

A bunch of ports wouldn't do that either.

Gonna take Retro and an EAD to really show what the Wii U can do.

I know. And I am saying they are making a huge mistake with their emphasis.

Nintendo didn't hint towards the future, they just left us with launch window games. The really should have shown or hinted at what they had for later in the cycle. There would be a lot less outrage right now. This includes whatever Retro, Monolith, and Tokyo EAD are up to.

Although they haven't shown much for the distant future, there are A LOT of games I want from them this year (all of them from the Mario series lolol).

-New Super Mario Bros. 2
-New Super Mario Bros. U
-Paper Mario Sticker Star
-Luigi's Mansion 2

...and the only other game I'll be getting this year is Resident Evil 6.

Reggie said on GTTV that their E3 showing, unlike the 3DS reveal at E3 2010, was focused only on launch-window software, which at least explains many of the first-party omissions. That was a pretty big mistake, IMO.

Yep, that's what I expected. I suppose he didn't mention when later games would be announced.

Really the Wii U's launch is a lot better than the 3DS's. We just don't know what happens afterward, and that's a huge problem.

I doubt my post will get seen in the rush of E3 posts here but I will try anyway:

Was this press conference a bit underwhelming? Yes.

Did I expect more from Nintendo, like core franchise title announcements, release dates etc.? Yes!

And did Nintendo also blew the chance hard to sell us all on the Wii U? Also yes... at first glance, I thought.

If I noticed something from Nintendo releasing the Wii against the HD twins, there actually seems a bit of tactical thinking in what they do. Microsoft has a huge financial backing so they could take the HD jump quite easily (on the expense of hardware reliability), Sony took quite a damage with the PS3 but managed to survive. What did Nintendo do? Overclock the Gamecube and R&D motion controls. It was very risky but it worked out, they made tons of money with little investment.

Now where are the tactics in such a mediocre E3 show? I will explain that, but their tactics might or might not have failed this time. I assume that none of the big games like Zelda, a 3D Mario, Smash Brothers, possibly F-Zero etc. would have been quite ready for launch. I assume that they might hold them back to have something to fire at Sony and Microsoft when they reveal the PS4 and the next XBOX. Much in the line of:

"Hey look here are the the other two next-gen consoles and we are totally more powerful than the Wii U!"

Nintendo: "Well you might be more powerful again but we have a 3D Mario in HD, a new F-Zero, a all new Zelda and Smash Brothers with fleshed out online functions, new IPs etc etc.! And this time we also appeal to multiplatform games, look at the Wii U Pro controller!"

Does this make more sense then to announce them right off the bat to try make everyone buy a Wii U first? Possibly, I'm not entirely sure about that one. If they would have launched all the megatons now without much to actually show anything concrete beyond early alpha versions people might still be unsure on buying a Wii U on launch. Afterall most people are not that informed and critical as we are on boards like here, they probably see the mainstream stuff that we exactly saw on the E3 conference and think "Alright." much like what the others did besides Ubisoft who tried a bit more.

It looks to me that Nintendo is saving the megatons to fight the PS4 and next XBOX more or less head-on when the games are more finished. Will this work out? Is this actually Nintendos plan? I don't know but sometimes they know what they are doing business wise, see Wii and sometimes they don't, see 3DS launch price. Lets just hope they know they are doing this time, afterall they also manged to pull a 180° shift with the 3DS.

I don't understand why we're getting ports of games that are already out. I would rather have DS3. I don't understand why Wii U won't be getting Far Cry 3 either as well as other franchises. It's ok though...I have a 360 for these games.

I don't think the third party support has gotten much better.

Well guys there's always next year.
Yup, alongside Sony and Microsoft's new consoles.

Them: "We have this, this and this on our shiny new box"
Crowd: "ooooooooo"
Nintendo: "Here's Batman Arkham Asylum. And you can fly Batman with the GamePad!"
Crowd: "..."

I'm just sitting here wondering where all the third party announcements are.
In the bargain bins for other consoles.

It's always possible they'll come but I would have though that if they were then we'd have seen them in the sizzle because they showed ME3, DS II etc

Apples to oranges comparison Daschysta.

Sony and Microsoft were selling new platforms on existing hardware.

Nintendo needed to sell a new platform and new hardware, they largely accomplished neither

I'm simply speaking to what E3 has become. I've admitted it was a mistake not to tease post-launch window games, they absolutely should have shown P-100 on the stage, and teased Retro/Mono/ other big 1st party games.

However, in general, E3 press conferences focus' has changed, and expectations should in turn also change. Nintendo has other avenues to show off their upcoming huge games, Nintendo Direct, TGS, their own conferences etc...

This was a subpar conference, but people should be able to understand it for what it was, purposely focusing ONLY on launch window titles and catering to mainstream press. Awesome stuff will be shown as they are ready for Wii-U. NDA's will be lifted from 3rd party games, and future 3rd party ports are more important to pay attention to than expecting companies to saturate the launch lineup with a billion million other old ports that won't sell in the crowd. It was a mistake in my opinion, but doesn't speak to anything other than that.

I expect call of duty (it was on wii...) Madden and those sorts of games. Games like Assassins Creed, Darksiders, Tekken etc... that haven't launched yet, but are launch games for Wii-U are the more important ones, and future 3rd party multiplats that have the opportunity to release same day on Wii-U.

That was the worst fucking conference i've seen in my life. I've been watching E3 for 12 years and nothing even comes close to the piece of shit that was this conference. That's it, I'm done. I'm selling all my Nintendo games and consoles tomorrow. You just lost a fan, and not just any fan, a big one.

You obviously never saw Nintendo's conference at E3 2008...

Couldn't agree more. Just compare their 2006 conference with this one. A huge difference in quality.

And no support from EA or Activision..? What the FUCK is going on..? FIFA, Madden and Tiger Woods are all ideal for the U GamePad and we've seen or heard NOTHING about the U getting a SKU of those titles. Unbelievable. And no BlOps 2 either..?

We needed to see a sizzle reel of Zelda, a 3D Mario, Metroid, Retro's new title, Monolith's new title. Cast your mind back to 2006, we had all that and more.

2006 was practically brimming with confidence. Nintendo had the plot and you could tell the industry was watching. They also communicated a future for the console that existed beyond its launch lineup, which was already much better than Wii U's.

Same with the 3DS reveal (though it's eventual launch lineup was much weaker).

They've totally lost the plot in the meantime. The singular vision seems to have been replaced by a collection of thoughts and ideas, sometimes coalescing but not effectively communicated. The lack of any sort of showing for first-party Nintendo franchises beyond Pikmin, NSMBU, and Nintendoland - only one of which could be considered a "core" title - gives off a feeling that they've bit off more than they can chew with HD development. The fact that the 3DS' first year sucked so much of their resources away also contributes to this feeling.

Nintendo took themselves, their fans and Core gamers and drove everybody off a cliff today (yes I'm posting this again because it perfectly captures the outcome of the conference). I hearby declare this the OFFICIAL all encompassing Gif for Nintendo E3 2012:

I didn't dislike the presser until they show Nintendo Land, I knew it will give the whole conference a very bad ending.

I'm not sure why they didn't close the conference with a title directed to the hardcore (like Metroid in 2009). You simply can't finish the conference with a casual title.

2 main problems with today as I see it, one fixable the one not.

1- As everyone else has said, absolutely zero non-launch teasers that can get people excited about the console. Just baffling to me. However, we know Retro is working on something. We know EAD Tokyo is working on something, etc.

2-And again, hopefully this is premature, but the 3rd party support right now is just terrible. Even Wii received Madden at launch. Seriously, nothing from EA Sports? Nothing from Activision? If I hadn't sat through a terrible inexplicable E3 presentation I would say EA and Activision have to have stuff to announce soon, but who knows? And along the same lines, absolutely no strong Japanese support, where frankly I expected Wii U to shine. Again, we'll see if things change this week, but right now, 3rd party support actually looks worse than what the Wii received.

You'd have to be an idiot to think that Nintendo couldn't match 2005 technology in 2012.

AgentUnknown - nice .gif but enough already. Yes it was a disaster but we all saw the post already.

Iwata is carefully monitoring our reactions, so MAYBE there might be something awesome at the roundtable.

Imagine if this happened:
Iwata: Yo, EAD & Retro, just send us a logo or some clips of whatever you are working on.

*shows at roundtable*

GAF/Gaming "Journalists": E3 REDEEMED NINTENDO IS DA WINNERZZZ!!!!11!!!11!

Nintendo need to relearn the sizzle reel thing, just fake it if its not really ready, everyone else does. :|

They should know the industry just works on hype, and you get it with $$$$ and making a scene to get you noticed.

Maybe there will be more games announced at TGS? I can't remember what was announced when they first showed off Wii Sports, obviously Zelda was too but were other games? Smash Bros. perhaps. Would of been nice to have seen what other teams are up to, I thought Nintendo said they had learnt their lesson with the 3DS.

Pikmin 3 looks lovely though :)

They patched Mario Kart 7 recently so patches are most likely coming to the WiiU.

Thanks for the answer.

Is there a voice chat system that exists for the 3DS?

I don't seem to recall anything about online chat as the talk was about social networking (text chat).

Why didn´t they demo a new game instead of Batman AC?

Assassins Creed III is suppose to use the tablet in several ways. Or Aliens, or Darksiders 2...

They really needed to show a Nintendo first party game and an exclusive third party game that blew everyone away or atleast proved that this console could push visuals more than the other two. They needed that Zelda that looked as good as the video or Star Fox, Metroid, smash or anything and it just wasn't there. Pikmin and Mario are fine but they were hardly impressive looking for a new console.

Arkham city was a poor choice to show imo nothing about it looked amazing, the game pad stuff was alright but nothing spectacular.By time the console hits most have already played Arkham City and by then the game will have dropped in price so much that putting it out with tacked on features for $60 is gonna be a tough sell. They needed t oshow something coming in the near future or close to it's launch and I am surprised Aliens wasn't shown considering how much Pitchford has been pushing the Wii-U lately.

3DS games honestly looked better to me than anything the Wii-U showed unfortunately.I hope more devs speak up now that it is out there and the secrecy stuff can stop.Curious to see what some Japanese devs are doing.

Will give them one thing, having a focus on the continuing use of Wii peripherals will probably pay off in getting the casual market to upgrade.

I really think you are kind of insane for what you said earlier, but I do agree with you on what E3 now represents. Its a showcase for technology and casual titles for the hardware companies. they trickle out details on actual game content later on.

So do we have an idea about the WiiU horsepower or is it what I think it is? The games shown today look like a very slightly beefed up version of a PS3/360.

What if when the passenger's point to the left, right, ahead... the GIF cut to embarassing points during the conference (dancing,reggie-zombi,25-minute explanation of how to play Luigi-PacMan).

Another weird thing.....where was the NFC stuff?....nothing shown, not even mentioned??

..and just for another thing to moan about....I think Lego City Stories is a much stronger name than Lego City Underground.

Nintendo has always saved something for their roundtables so this year should be no different. But they'd have to announce a helluva lot to save their E3 showing. At least the 3ds scene is looking good.
