[N-Conf] ZombiU for WiiU

Damn, I'm sold! That was some pretty solid horror, great atmosphere as well. I rolled my eyes at the game during the conference, but this game is looking like a must-buy for me. The rogue-like feature seems fantastic as well. Any clue if there are going to be boss fights in this game? Just wondering due to the Nintendo Direct zombie game clip. I'm sort of doubting it since a Ubisoft rep (speaking to Keighly, I believe) said that you can't "beat" the game (at least in the traditional sense... I'm sure they've got to work in some kind of major milestone sequences rather than just endless wandering, and it seems the game has at least some amount of linearity to it from the video).

Man, when Ubi first showed this, I my first thought was "Welp, here's the Red Steel for Wii U". This is looking phenomenal though, even if it won't be to everybody's taste.

Actually, the ubisoft rep said it was possible you may survive the campaign with one or two of your characters. Will there be an overarching story? Unlikely. Will there be an ending? Yes.

Edit: To your edit. The title Zombi U comes from Zombi (one of Ubisoft's first titles) and Wii U.

Oh that's great, I'm not sure how I misunderstood that. I'm not sure I understand how you could survive with two of your characters -- I thought you only got an additional character if you lost your life.

Edit: To your edit of my edit: I read that earlier today, but it still sounds silly ;) It left me with an impression that this would be an extraordinarily generic zombie game, based on the title and lack of details, but that certainly isn't the case.

The kotaku preview said that you could beat the game with only one character, and get an achievement for that.

I hope the characters have at least a little background story or something attached to them.

So when you die, where does your next survivor start? Back at the beginning?

Probably some hub / checkpoints along the way. Maybe you meet gatherings of survivors hiding out and that's how they let you know?

Just checked out some videos and this looks cool. Not the best looking game, but some cool ideas that I think will make the gameplay fresh. I really like the idea of rummaging through your backpack in real time, instead of being able to cheat with a pause menu to equip your ideal weapon like most games. And trying to pick locks, punch codes, etc in the midst of the action. That should really add to the tension.

So, I'm kind of wondering IF this game can be played only on the Wii U pad (no TV). It really doesn't seem to be designed for that style of play.

3D Mario. Today must be "My anger with Nintendo will cause me to take bg's posts out of context" day. :p

Whoops. Still, the point remains, they didn't show anything that would look out of place on the Wii in some fashion. Pixar quality would be easier to achieve on 1 2D plane than 3D, and we didn't even get that lol.

This might be the case, or perhaps you will keep some things aside from your BOB (such as weapon levels and/or other things) to help you out if you start all the way over at the beginning. They certainly won't leave you high and dry and at the beginning every single time you die if there's to be some kind of progression.

What was that at about the 5:10 mark? Looked almost like a raging ghost.

All the reflections of people in the background kept throwing me off. I noticed that part at 5:10 my first time as well

The GameTrailers video was awesome.

One thing though.. the gun sound effects.. lack a real punch.

Very muted, I agree.

The GT vid was pretty kickass, it's what RE should be these days IMO. A bit more work and polish and I'm definitely snapping this up. Ubi kicked ass this E3.

I wanna see more SONAR gameplay. That part from the concept trailer was awesome, specially when the zombie jumps to you.

I thought this showed rather poorly at the Nintendo press conference but the gameplay video looks pretty decent. Good atmosphere. This is a pleasant surprise.

I can't believe it. ZombiU looks like a worthy system seller for me. That gametrailer's preview showed it has great atmosphere, and it looks really good too. Sold me on the Wii U for a potential day one purchase (baring I can get it day one lol).

Newer video looks very survival horror, lighting in particular was nice. The animations and sound need work, hopefully they can polish those aspects up as well as improve the models over the next 6 months.

This is such a pleasant surprise.

We're actually getting a full-fledged survival horror game. I love the one-bite and death concept, plus the way in which the GamePad is used to create tension. Terrific stuff.

But most of all I love that the zombies aren't everywhere. Too much of something ruins the element of surprise and scare, because you expect them to be around.

By not having zombies everywhere, you won't know when and where to expect them.

Hey I agree they messed up something that should have been an easy presentation. But their screw up doesn't mean the games we're looking forward to all of a sudden became cancelled. NSMB seems to be their way of getting a "quick" Mario game ready for launch to avoid what happened with 3DS' launch. In fact as I say that, that may have played a part in why the conference went the way it did. Someone made a good post about Sony and MS being conservative and I felt Nintendo joined them. And the 3DS may have contributed to that.

bg...I will never take what you say out of context <3

*hugs*

I just watched that recent GT video, and after snubbing it hard earlier I have to say I'm interested.

One thing that bugs me though is the dude on the walkie talkie. Hopefully you can turn it off. I'm also looking forward to seeing if there's any other game modes and hopefully the campaign is quite meaty.

I wish I were a bigger fan of this genre, because the ideas of Zombi U are inspiring. So much interesting stuff in here, and as an added bonus, it actually seems like it'll be taking advantage of the U-Pad in smart ways.

I might buy it anyway, just to support what looks to be a great game. Hey, maybe I'll even end up liking it!

I believe that is the "boss" like zombie you face later in the building giving you a slight wtf moment
Looks pretty sweet; seems to give a lot of classic RE-style scares. The "Nurse" special zombie talked about in Kotaku reminds me of that Jason Voorhies-inspired boss in HVS' The Grinder.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure most people weren't "wowed"

Nope, you're not wrong. Just about everyone complained about the look of both the PS3 and 360 titles.

It should also be noted that 9 times out of 10 demos at events are old builds. A bit pointless having a new build that's possibly prone to crashes.

I think this is going to be the U's killer app at launch.

I'm quite surprised that ZombiU, Arkham City and Aliens Colonial Marines have all showcased the graphical capability and the new controller better than anything that Nintendo have come up with.

I've read a couple of hands-on reports and they've both been glowing. This is going to sell gangbusters.

New videos:

I'm sold. Game looks great, and very atmospheric.

I noticed that you can level up your weapons after killing X amount of zombies.

This is more survival horror than anything I've seen lately. System seller. I'm getting the WiiU this year. This game looks rad.

It honestly looks like they took Demon's Souls/Dark Souls idea of death and improvement through iteration and added RE Gun Survivor in.

Even the look of the game is great. It's not hokey like RE is. I just hope they don't add supernatural elements like ghosts in it. Leave that to games that do it right like Fatal Frame and such.

I'm not even a big fan of zombies myself and I'm pretty excited about this (after what I've seen).

Just like in the gameplay trailer, "BAM!", suddenly the game was on my radar... ;D

Its a damn shame. I hope there is at least 1 game at launch that shows what the hardware can really do (and no, not some multi-plat for those who may say Trine lol).

Well thats a better zombie horror game then that resident evil 6 crap.

I didn't think I would agree after seeing it at the conference, but after those gametrailer videos I agree. This is more of a survival horror than anything I've seen on consoles in a while. It's tempting me to get a Wii U day one.

LoL, I think there won't be any ghosts. I thought I was seeing one during the gameplay video, but that was just a refection of people walking by :D

The Gametrailers video really sold me on the game. The atmosphere it creates is realistic and really makes me not want to explore areas.

The graphics inside the nursery actually looked very good. Very good light and most models seemed to have high polygon counts. The only thing that was letting it down at times were textures. They appeared flat at times and some looked out of place, but I'm assuming they're probably place holder textures and will be replaced once they begin to polish up the game.

Ok, the game looks more interesting than I anticipated. But I still want my tongue-in-cheek, black comedy, exploitation horror mutant aliens game!

80's films. Bow. We need to expand beyond Zombies and Terrorist/Russians/Nazis.

What ever happened to those two games shown by HVS awhile back?

I love how they use the WiiU controller, not just because of the inventory and stuff, but because having to look away from the screen in and of itself adds to the psychological horror aspect of it. If you were actually in that situation, you'd have to constantly look up from your bag and look around, etc. and they frame things in a way that gives you enough of a "quick glance you" when you are having to do something on the controller. Freaking cool.

Can someone tell me how it is that the two Ubisoft games that were heavily showcased manage to use the controller better than anything Nintendo showed that was first party? Seriously boggles my mind...

I still kind of shocked at how Ubisoft pretty much knocked it out of the park this E3. Not just with this game, everything.

I posted my favorite part of the trailer in the NBA thread

I loved in the trailer how it was like

"You can Hack doors with the controller!!!"

*proceeds to punch number code into pad*.

Me: Uhhh....

Truly gives Human Revolution a run for its money!

That actually looks decent. This looks like a real true survival horror game. Why the hell they didn't show this at the conference makes no sense. Definitely keeping my eye on how this game progresses now.
