Capybaragames president thinks FC3:Blood dragon Trailer is a ripoff.

SuperTimeForce 's video is not funny, FC3:BD's video is so bad is good.
So not a ripoff, unless ripoff means things get better.

Will buy FC3:BD if its on sales.

edit:

There is a apology? Good.

Still going to buy FC3:BD if its on sales.

Good marketing SuperTimeForce , never heard of it before.

I think we need to pull back the drama meter here if you think this is somehow jeopardizing the business/project.

As I made sure to say in the part of my post that you *didn't* quote, I was speaking generally about people Twitter, not this guy. If you honestly want to tell me that you think Twitter isn't dangerous to businesses/projects/public perception/people's jobs, you're on the wrong forum to be doing it.

I think he is just trying to promote his game (which no one has heard of)

Maybe the game, but Capy is pretty popular with GAF due to Critter Crunch.

Nathan posts here as well, so I'm sure he cou--

I see 2 trailers paying homage to the 80's. Can't we all just get along? I do think STF's one is way funnier.

Because Capybara are the heroes gaming deserves, and especially the one's we need right now. So we'll hunt the AAA monstrosities like Far cry 3 and Infinite for being rip off's and getting "everything wrong".

They're our kickstarter Guardians...

Our Indie Knights...

Watching the old SuperTimeForce trailer which wasn't even that funny and just super trying too hard, you'd have to be having some kind of mental episode to think its JUST LIKE Blood Dragon's. Like, grainy video commercials at the start? They think they invented that?

Is Nathan perhaps 9 years old and doesnt realise that most things have been done by tons of other people before him yet, and thats a conversation Dad has to sit down and have with him?

While I agree that the videos are similar but not ripoffs, these weirdly vitriolic responses are comedic.

I see similarities in terms of the whole script but that FarCry one is so much better it's even a blessing for that Super TIME force guy.

A bit of a stretch. The only similarity is the beginning bit which makes more sense within the context of the Far Cry 3 trailer.

Huh. Unless they put it under some incredibly esoteric and stupid name as usual, TV Tropes doesn't have an entry for "video creates mood and setting by showing various television commercials at start," which is a pretty old device.

They almost certainly did this. Fucking TVTropes, man.

I'm more amazed that he complains about Ubi supposedly aping his trailer when his trailer aped Pendelton Ward and John Kricfalusi's styles pretty accurately.

You mean popular as spamming it in the steam sales thread? Because thats all I remember of it.

No, I mean in that Kass actively advertised it and the game itself was pretty popular among people that played the initial PS3 release.

They both seem like the MGS4 opening.

i was thinking the same thing, and im sure it's been done before that too.

i would still be annoyed if i was Capy because its kind of stealing some of their thunder. but twitter will come back to bite you in the ass.

Capy I love you but shut up.
This. Come on, there's nothing here to complain about. The 80's nostalgia shtick has been thoroughly mined by media companies big and small.

STF and FC:BD are just two properties in a long line of IPs trading on nostalgia, and frankly, this is grade-school nonsense.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
It must be addictive to people or something, it seems to act like alcohol at effecting the inhibitions in a person's brain.

Theres no filter. They have a thought, type it into a box wherever they are in the world on a PC, phone, tablet, whatever, and out it goes to thousands and thousands of people instantaneously.

Worse still, anyone in a position of popularity will get retweets and sycophants agreeing with their nonsense, which results in them militantly doubling down on their terribly flawed opinion, and it all becomes an arms race in stupidity and outrage.

What struck and annoyed me the most about this latest outburst of twitter nonsense is its coming from the kind of tone of voice your annoying baby brother is yelling down the stairs to your mom about, like "MOOOOOOOOOOM~, P&B IS DRAWING A ROBOT T-REX BUT I DID THAT FIRST!!!!". But unlike that clearcut parenting exercise where Mom would say "stop being silly and stop fighting, you can both draw robot T-rex's!", Nathan now experiences hundreds of "YOURE TOTALLY IN THE RIGHT" Mom replies alongside the "what are you smoking?" disbelief.

From my own personal interactions with Nathan, he's always been a super-chilled, easy going kinda guy, so this all seems a tad out of character with my perception of him. Regarding the trailers I don't see much in the way of similarity. As a child of the 70's and a teenager of the 80's they both make me smile but also make me cringe that 1) I remember a lot of the references first hand and 2) hammers home just how old I am :-(

I do agree with the sentiment expressed by others that twitter seems to bring out a certain side of people (and I include myself in this in the past), and it's to be avoided in times of high stress or emotion. A cool down effect like you get in chat rooms would save a lot of hassle in the long run I reckon.

I hope the next Dudebro 2 trailer is actually a ripoff of the Super Time Force one, just to see what this guy says.

I don't see any similarities.
When you ape something that has been aped already back and forth like anything 80s, some things are gonna look similar, that is not shocking.

I look at a lot of business plans and people are often convinced the idea they have is so original it needs to be secret. Meanwhile I've looked at several startups which have a variation of the same idea that have come into existence in the same period.

People tend to think that the mental process to arrive at an idea makes it original (ownership) not realizing how much external states of affairs (culture, zeitgeist) affects internal states. That idea is drawing on what you find compelling which is often in turn what other contemporaries find compelling. We like to think our own interests are unique and special.

Not to discount the blatant mimicry that does occur, especially in media where scripts, prototypes, etc are all shared behind the scenes (e.g. movie producers copying ideas from scripts they didn't option). But more often than not it's because the idea isn't as original as it seems (and is part of a fashion or trend). Even when it's a case of following success the similar thing, the "copy" may have had its genesis first and didn't find a path to market for whatever reasons.

... huh, am I the only one NOT seeing anything even remotely close to Time Force?

Is it because they both use cartoons?

...

Twitter really is a gold mine. When can we expect the next sad sack to say something stupid?

Both are using the retro 80's tv thing. Whether one copied another I don't know but it's not that unique an idea to get too worked up about. BUT as much as I tell Capy it's not that unique an idea, the FarCry guys are even more creatively bankrupt if they just copied it.

Great studio, but I really think he overreacted. It doesn't matter whether it was on Twitter or whatever, it just wasn't a proportional response.

I think the real crime is that Blood Dragon didn't copy Kojima.

Everyone should start copying Kojima's trailers.

I totally see it. An animated GI Joe parody starting off with VHS tape artifacts/stuff that's been recorded over, when the actual game is not in that style. I think he's right, if they didn't take the idea it's a pretty big coincidence. It's not that general that I think Ubi gets a pass. Maybe if you're not old enough to remember the old GI Joe cartoon you won't see it, but it's pretty much the exact cartoon that both are referencing.

On the other hand I totally want to play Ubi's game now.

Oy. Im starting to wonder if it's getting to the point that twitter posts are a bad idea if you're a developer, as the risk of speaking too soo or too rash seems rather high these days.

It works when you're right, I guess. Like when Glee ripeed off that Jonathan Coulton song

that isn't what Capy's trailer does. theirs is channel surfacing. and I don't see anything GI Joe about their animated trailer.

and Far Cry 3's intro is better because of the camel toe.

plus, I think if you're parodying something, you have no recourse if someone parodies the parody.
