Capybaragames president thinks FC3:Blood dragon Trailer is a ripoff.

I love Caby and support them with my money with every release- this is just weird though

There are similarities in the beginning but to me, that's it.

I think you should be taking a different approach here Capy. Rip-off is such a harsh term and imitation is the highest form of flattery. Lets just say they drew inspiration from your novel video and everyone can enjoy the extra publicity with smiles on their faces.

I can't defend myself here or on twitter.
Why not? You used words to get yourself into this mess. Use 'em to get out. Explain why you think it's a blatant rip-off instead of saying "it is!"

80's homages like 'channel-changing/faux-VHS' intros and cartoon parodies have been done countless times before this Blood Dragon spot came out, so naturally people are a little confused. Help us understand why you feel so wronged and why you think so strongly, in this particular instance, that you have some sort of ownership over these commonplace, widespread tropes.

As someone that creates video content, I'm more than a little concerned that people can scream "Rip-off!" for things like this.

Yep, I´m a composer in a commercial production company. We do sound or lookalikes all the time.
This is really not a rip off at all.

Capy's Canadian. But yeah the Bioshock bandwagoning was particularly lazy. Claiming the game was everything that's wrong with the industry, and then referring people to other articles rather than forming an argument himself.

Even I saw this, and I don't follow anyone involved, it just was from random, oddball retweets. Capy participating in it was a let down, though, considering they can actually produce a good product (the others I saw... well...) and seemed like they had better sense up until recently!

Similarities:
Starts with 80s channel surfing of random stuff

I wouldn't strictly say the intros were the same.

One was channel surfing, the other is clearly playing an old, degraded VHS tape that has been recorded over. It was pretty common back then to have a few seconds of whatever old thing was on the tape before the new recording came up. I think there might even have been a play symbol in the corner but the tracking lines gives it away.

And mute is not the same as moot. That's been driving me crazy this whole thread.

Yeah, as a songwriter I am very familiar with all this sort of business and I think everyone needs to chill out. If the public isn't throwing accusations at you and the other person isn't getting large benefit from it, even a direct copy just means the other person is being shitty and worthy of mockery. Though, the bounds of what copying is are pretty damn tricky.

Likewise, observers need to understand what passion is as well as the fragility of an indie house. The feels come out and need to be spoken to rather than lambasted. This shit happens all the time in any artistic scene. Unless a persistent arrogance is demonstrated there is no reason to throw anyone under the bus for a single tweeting spree.

Really? This is Twitter, it's a glorified Facebook wall. It is public to the world true, but I hardly think stating something on Twitter means you're starting a conversation with the entire world. Plus, most of the world doesn't even have access to Twitter...so COME ON :p

It''s public to the entire world so it is addressed to everyone, regardless of the fact that some people are not capable of reading or responding. In cases like this where you don't address your comments to anyone in particular, what argument do you have against anyone and everyone responding and debating your comments? I mean it's just not a good idea when you're representing any business or organization that isn't yourself as you'll wind up in a situation where a bunch of people are angry at you.

I'm feeling really gross about petty divisions in the American scene right now. Between raging, substance-less anti-BioShock rants from industry folk on Twitter whose favorite games include Gears of War and Skyrim, the whole Adam Orth situation that didn't reflect well on anyone, the discontent some people on this forum will feel until they're actually able to bathe in the blood of Arthur Gies, EA trying its hardest to shit in the mouth of anyone that'll comply... it's icky. I don't know if it's the uncertainty of the generational shift, or what. Things feel really bad right now.

Why were they saying it's everything that's wrong with games? Because it's a shooter?

Most of the time I´m "ripping somebody off" who ripped somebody else off.
That being said every track that leaves my studio is checked by lawyers and approved just to be sure.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Well my opinion of Capy took a nose dive.

Yes boys, you own "80's nostalgia". Thats yours!

thanks for the laugh
put your thoughts in to something less like a fragmented RSS feed of ankle shallow observations and maybe i'll pay attention you illiterate twitter clowns.

Nah, it sounds ok to me.

It's another non-apology, though.

I apologize to @spleenzilla & the FC3BD team for my harsh statements. I've been told it was all happenstance, and I'll take their word.

He's only apologizing for the tone of his statements, which still leaves him saying they copied his video.

Payphones are still pretty prevalent in Montreal, so it is kinda like stepping back into the 80s.

The concept of starting your video with fake commercials is not new. It is a good way to place your the video in the context of a specific time/place.

When you make something that is a pastiche, it is really hard to get mad at someone else who makes a similar one.

I get how someone can be sensitive over their creations, but there is nothing of substance to these claims. I really don't want the games industry, especially indies, to claiming that anything that uses a similar idea is a ripoff. Because games themselves are incredibly iterative.

If we applied this sort of scrutiny to games: "Your game has a late title screen!" "You game has pixel art!" "Your game is set in WW2!" "Your game is turn based!" Your game has an escort mission!" "Your game has a basic training tutorial sequence!" Your game is about saving a princess" "Your game is about manipulating time" "Your game has chiptune music!" "Your game has a narrator!" and so on.

Huh. Unless they put it under some incredibly esoteric and stupid name as usual, TV Tropes doesn't have an entry for "video creates mood and setting by showing various television commercials at start," which is a pretty old device.

Watching the old SuperTimeForce trailer which wasn't even that funny and just super trying too hard, you'd have to be having some kind of mental episode to think its JUST LIKE Blood Dragon's. Like, grainy video commercials at the start? They think they invented that?

Is Nathan perhaps 9 years old and doesnt realise that most things have been done by tons of other people before him yet, and thats a conversation Dad has to sit down and have with him?

I see what he means but, I think the actual game content is very different(obviously). Anyway he should consider his twitter post and this GAF thread as all the advertisement he needs. Besides his game looks way more appealing imo and I will be sure to pick it up.

settle down sport

I see it, I would be upset too.

It might be ok for *you* to have this attitude, but if you're someone who's involved in a huge, costly business/creative venture that many people have spent years of their lives on, it's dangerously naive and completely irresponsible.

I think we need to pull back the drama meter here if you think this is somehow jeopardizing the business/project.

Not good enough. Gotta send roses and chocolate so that it shows you really mean it!

Or internalizing what's been said and reevaluating your opinion!

But, hey, this is the internet. No one comes on here to learn more or change their mind about something.
