Then the problem's on Kickstarter's side. I don't see anything wrong with asking fans to donate for a thing, however nebulous.

The problem I have is that they set the goal to $10, meaning it's more of a "we're going to take all money that is pledged because we really have any associated costs with this idea. We just like money." A $10 goal means that they don't really need money, they're just looking for as many people to fund whatever they wish to do. It seems fairly disingenuous to have the Kickstarter when they have an existing popular webpage, fan-base and know how to do this without Kickstarter.

Sure, this comes down to "if you don't like it, don't pledge" - and I agree with that - but it seems to be taking advantage of what Kickstarter was about - people with no pre-existing avenues for getting their product created.

It just seems a bit skeevy and a cashgrab. Having said that, I don't have $25 000 in free cash and especially haven't been previously given half a million (and no one is beating down my door to do so) so maybe I'm just mad jelly.

It's on 3ds but you need a jp 3ds...I do remember psp taiko, that ish was tooooughhhh! I'm was never too hot on the music though, but it was still fun enough...actually now that i think about it, the music was ok, it was the drums. like, how it doesn't really blend in with the music n stuff..

That reminds me, I never got around to getting DJMax vita, I should get on that this weekend!
Yeah, I played the original DS one but didn't really enjoy it as much. The track list was small and the songs weren't as good. I also preferred just using the dpad/buttons rather than the touch screen, and the PSP was better for that. I'm sure the 3DS one would be improved, but I still prefer the Vita buttons and it seems like a better fit for me. Plus I don't have a JP 3DS, yeah.

Not sure how much of it you played, but the drums blend much better as you go up to harder difficulties, although it's not like most other rhythm games where you play the actual music. You add the Taiko drum to the music instead.

last 10 games played is not the same as a list of shooters from a 6 year period.

NSMB 2
Halo 4
CoD: Blops 2
Tomb Raider
Sleeping Dogs
Bioshock Infinite
New Super Mario Bros U
Assassin's Creed III
Lego City Undercover (get this awesome game)
Hitman Absolution
Sly Cooper:Thieves in Time

Penny Arcade went the way of The Simpsons years ago.

Thankfully they are involved in plenty of awesome charity things so I don't mind that they turned into a business first kind of production.

Funny thing is I would have gladly dropped $50-$100 to watch Strip Search.

Edit: Here's the last ten games I played

1. Some 3DS game I got for cheap so I can get more Club Nintendo Points
2. A work in progress iOS game a friend is making for me to give feedback on
3. Another new C64 game in made in Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit
4. One of those turn based Boggle game things that the wife and I play against each other
5. A game you've never heard of
6. Mario Something
7. It's getting a lot of buzz on Twitter but it isn't that interesting
8. Who cares
9. Buying cheap Humble Bundles and Never Installing Any Of Them Let Alone Playing Them
10. Some version of Street Fighter

One for Jambo

Not entirely sure about the last ten games I played... I guess:

Monkey Island 2: Special Edition
The Witcher
Warhammer 40k: Space Marine
Vanquish
DIRT 3
Lone Survivor
Black Mesa
Botanicula
Civilization V
MechWarrior Online

Get Tropico Reloaded (Tropico, Tropico: Paradise Island, Tropico 2), Tropico 3 (Steam SE), Tropico 4 (Steam SE) from Indie Gala for (current price) $8.26. All Steam keys. Not sure if individual keys.

Bioshock
Tomb Raider
Okami
Dota
Monaco

also started 999 but haven't played much of it yet, and in my sadness of not owning a vita I've been watching a playthrough of Corpse Party book of shadows :p

Then the problem's on Kickstarter's side. I don't see anything wrong with asking fans to donate for a thing, however nebulous.

Then maybe they should do it over their own site. I don't see why they need to turn kickstarter into a second paypal account.

You don't have time for P4, Kritz. Get back to project.

I'll have you know our project is doing perfectly fine getting credits!
(Spoiler: Everyone is super bummed out we're getting credits)

On the plus side, I somehow min-maxed my advanced game assignment CRA by technically doing what it asked, but in a very poor way. Ended up with a 60%, which is way better than the fail I was expecting because nothing in my code worked. I love it when Rob passes me. >_>

Last 10 played:

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
Bastion
Hitman: Absolution
Monaco
Ms. Splosion Man
Binary Domain
The Cave
Deadlight
Devil May Cry
Dishonored

I am super jazzed about seeing Space Seed: Into Darkness today. 3D Gold class and lunch in Gold Class and dessert in Gold Class (someone else is paying, can you tell?)

I have rewatched ST TMP and ST II Wrath of Khan this week in prep. I just realised that both movies have
the first officer sacrificing themselves to save the ship from destruction (they are both over 30 years old so that's like spoiling who won the America's Cup in 1983 but anyhoo)

Spoiler tags because I remember somehow spoiling the end to 1933's King Kong in 2005. As did Peter Jackson.

GTA4 requires me to go to a home to save.

This sucks! Let me save anywhere!

I can't wait for Saints Row 4, followed a month later bv GTA5! An absurd open world game, followed by a not so absurd open world game. Gimme!!

S1 Community was god tier comedy. It's just... Gone downhill since.

I need to catch up on Season 3.

This is fucking pathetic.

Fuck you, Penny Arcade.

Here here. I was at the QandA at PAX East when they announced they were doing a Kickstarter for the podcast and thought it was just money grabbing. How hard is it to get recording equipment when you are already running a successful business. I'll listen to the podcast to see if it's any good but I sure as hell won't pay for it
I contributed to the Idle Thumbs kickstarter, I'm still a fool

Making podcasts costs money. Sure, it's not 'making a game' or 'making a line of toys' money, but it still costs money. Your time and work has a value.

Paying for content isn't a strange concept, I don't know why people are upset at the thought of paying for content?

But making the campaign have a $10 success target is...baffling. They're simultaneously saying that making a podcasts costs lots and of money and no money at the same time.

Now it's just reminded me they teased us about doing a Kickstarter to make more Webcomics Weekly podcasts. I want that now damn it.

I think monetising a podcast is fine as long as it's also obtainable for free, but they could obviously use other methods of doing it without Kickstarter. I guess they just want to grab that Kickstarter dolla while it's still available.

I'd be like 'Well Kickstarter is by far the best creator-protected method legally speaking' because it doesn't impose any obligations on the creator apart from the reward tiers I think and blah blah blah but none of that really seems to matter because seriously 10 dollar threshold what

So really they are just treating it like a store/tipjar

...which is fine, as a concept. So it all just rounds back to kickstarter letting dudes do with their service what they say others can't

Nailed it.

I actually really enjoy Kickstarter. As soon as they stop that bullshit requirement of having a US bank account I'll be putting up a campaign of my own.

And Rahk, if you can figure out a way to make money off a podcast without charging for it I'm all ears. :)

I didn't mean without charging for it. I meant they don't need a huge upfront influx of cash to start it, so they could just use a subscription model and announce it on their site or something for the people that want to pay for it. They can still offer it for free, but allow people who want to pay to donate or subscribe. I suppose that would essentially be the same thing though, and Kickstarter is the easiest way to go about it. I keep thinking about how Maximum Fun does it with donation drives once a year.

It just seems odd that they would do this now that they are super rich, when they were against donations for their web comic in the past at a time when they were poor. I know it's not exactly a donation since you get something in each of the tiers, but it still seems like a similar thing since people are more willing to throw more money at something like this if they feel that they are directly contributing to it being made.

Ah, yep, I see what you're saying. Subscription model works fine too. Come to think of it the only real tangible benefit I get out of my Giant Bomb subscription these days is the 400 billion hours of podcasts taking up space on my iPhone, and even then it's only a side effect.

I do remember reading PA in the late '90s and seeing the Amazon donation bar widget on their site.

God damn am I kicking myself for not doing webcomics back then. Stupid aspirations to get into the games industry!

Yeah, I might be wrong, but I believe that was at a time when they were really struggling and only put it up because they had to. I think they typically said in their posts that they were against the idea.

Eh, Thumbs is completely different IMO. For theirs, they actually used the money to get them things to broadcast the cast and have it be high quality: their office/studio, audio stuff, backer rewards (I need to lose weight so I can fit into my Thumbs merch for PAX)... and Thumbs isn't their main job that they get paid for. There's a tangible thing you can see and experience and benefit from (most of all, from their (AU-time) Sunday Streams).

$10 goal. Unethical. Basically breaking the only rule of Kickstarter, to have a point to the campaign.

This is just a fundraising campaign. Kickstarter will be happy to take their 5% though.

Also this isn't illegal.
One of the main problems I have with it (at least, one I can articulate before I turn into a ticking timebomb of fury) is that you don't have a fucking Kickstarter where there are tiers that are higher than the initial goal.

These guys don't need money. They have PAX. They have their comic that they get ads from (although didn't they have a KS that was supposed to remove those or something?) and merchandise. It's their business and fair enough to them, but you don't KS shit that your *business* can adequately cover like a motherfucker.

I actually remember when that RPG camp KS ripoff was launched, that people were saying it's an even worse version of the PA KS to remove ads (I think that's what it was). Now they're just fucking people even harder... and suckers are actually falling for it.

Kickstarter as a company are *rapidly* losing any kind of respect I had for them as a place that where great ideas that wouldn't normally get off the ground, can. Fucking pathetic.

Yeah, basically this.

Superman collection Blu Rays for $45 posted
SSFIV3D on 3DS for $17 posted if you haven't already got it cheaper from KMart or Target in the past.

GTA5 looks a LOT more fun than 4 was. Helps they are kinda incorporating the styles of all 3 of the PS2 classics lol

SR4 I will wait for a sale, in retrospect I am thinking less and less of SR3 whereas SR2 grew more fondly on me after I finished it.

But making the campaign have a $10 success target is...baffling. They're simultaneously saying that making a podcasts costs lots and of money and no money at the same time.
Yeah the argument that they need the Kickstarter to hire a sound guy falls flat when the original target was $10. Just reeks of "the first Kickstarter made a shitload of money with zero effort. How about a second! We can buy Scrooge McDuck money silos and swim in it!". As if they have no real idea what to do and will just fly by the seat of their pants.

Not to mention how contradictory it is to their previous hate campaign on Kickstarter. Rubs me the wrong way but hard to fault them for exploiting their die hard fans who are happy to throw money at them, just annoying they are part of the problem of misusing consumers and the system put in place to help people who struggle to keep in the industry.

Unemployment down to 5.5%. We're basically at full employment.

If the Labor Party were competent at media management (lol), they would grab this headline and run with it.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-05-09/abs-employment-figures-april/4679182
If they were competent then the Liberals wouldn't even bother with the election! They would get re-elected in a landslide but here we are.

Also the rise in employment is probably linked to the outsourcing of contracts. Since Easter our Strategic group has exploded with tenders to hit up, was quiet since December but the Easter break has made companies/government offices hit the SOMEONE ELSE DO IT button.

I blame price creep due to unionisation in workplaces. That seems to be a defining reason in us picking up a lot of work (which is fucked as the people still in the union are making our lives hell).

Is the Penny Arcade problem stemming from the fact they're asking for donations, or that they're asking for donations via kickstarter?

Say if they whipped up a website with a paypal link, that showed how much money they had gotten, that was almost identical to a kickstarter except it didn't have a 'goal', didn't have 'rewards' (aside from the podcast, presumably), and wasn't made in accordance with kickstarter rules and whatever.

Or is the problem, Penny Arcade have hella money and they don't need to ask for more to make another side project.

Kickstarter as a company are *rapidly* losing any kind of respect I had for them as a place that where great ideas that wouldn't normally get off the ground, can. Fucking pathetic.
Except for the fact that Kickstarter are letting these things run (and since people are backing them, why not?), I don't see any problem letting people put these sorts of things on.

I do take issue with Penny Arcade running these sorts of Kickstarters. The first one didn't actually create or produce anything (aside from some bonuses, which they could easily sell through their existing storefront) and this one with its $10 minimum is really just a way of them begging for as much money as they can get their hands on. They already have the ability to create a podcast, so what exactly do they need "kickstarted"? Nothing.

Put it on your own site with a PayPal donation or whatever, I don't care, but don't abuse the intent of Kickstarter because you have a large enough fanbase you know will pay for just about anything.

That's what they used to do, before they made it "big".

I wonder if I can kickstart a holiday for myself. I'll write a journal, and people who have donated will get a copy of that journal.

That would be absolutely fine. They have a website, a fanbase and the ability to do it themselves. People pay through the site and they produce a padcast available to those people. This just seems like an easy cashgrab with no justification of what aspect of the Kickstarter needs to be funded; if anything, this is more of a subscription drive. "We want money because money. Money?"

I actually feel some responsibility in what has happened to Kickstarter. There have been a couple of campaigns to which I have contributed that fall somewhat close to Penny Arcades latest venture; not as bad, but people and companies that have other avenues available to them. I predominately use it to fund projects (predominately comics) where someone just has a drive to create something and wants it to exist and needs help doing so. I love being a part of that. It makes me feel good to help someone realise a dream or a passion.

However, the site is now seen as a way for people that already have the means to more easily get money and remove risk from themselves. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as the site allows it and it's a viable avenue of pursuit but it really goes against (my perceived) spirit of the website.

The problem is, I would like to make a stand and let Kickstarter know that I won't partake in further projects until they weed out the recent spate of similar campaigns that have left a bad taste in my mouth. I'd like to, but it also does a lot of good, too.

That's...brilliant :)

But yeah I plan on doing a Kickstarter for something Blow The Cartridge related. Maybe a nice hardcover book, maybe a drive that will fund me being able to make more than one a week. I'm leaning towards the latter. No idea if anyone would be silly enough to fund it though, and doing the math to find out how much it would cost to do more comics than I'm doing now is making my head spin.

It's basically a store without any legal protection for consumers at this point, come to think of it

But it's not, really, it's just that people think it is.

It was designed as a platform to attract investors to financially back a creative project, where the payoff for investors would be the creative project's existence. Which is a good idea! It's just been twisted a bit.

I spend about $100 a month on various Kickstarters, mostly retro-gaming related game development, and have so far received the end result of two projects in total.

Which sounds terrible, but trust me, it's actually not bad considering how many times I've been on a creative project that never saw the light of day.

I just think a lot of people lose sight of the fact that most creative projects fail, and you are taking a risk - just like you would with any other investment.

Jintor

What people think it is is what it is. if it's allowed to be used in that fashion then it becomes what it is used to do. [Semantic argument obviously, but true as well].

If it's deviating from its design goal, it's because it is being allowed to do so.

Frankly as someone not deeply invested in the kickstarter system I can't get all that worked up about this. I've come around to the position that it's an unmitigated cash grab, but - what? It's up to Kickstarter to police its own environment, and if they're not willing to do that, let them reap the whirlwind.
