Edge #256: Why PS4 is your next console (Shots fired, post-DRM 180)

Has no bearing on what I wrote. I was correcting misinformation, not commenting on the article.

Still doesn't change what I wrote. You CAN have both - the issue is understanding the job. Facts come first. Opinion pieces shouldnt be considered "journalism" since they... You know... Are OPINION pieces.

consumer products don't get "journalists" they get columnists and feature writers.

they are not political parties and they do not warrant bias-free reporting.

it is up to the Edge editorial staff to decide if they think it's commercially sensible to piss off a few fanboys to tell the story as they see it. Clearly they do.

Pretty accurate. It is what it is. MSFT didn't exactly play its cards the best way the last couple of months.

A resounding yes to the last part, but definitely not the Edge's statement you and many other people seem to be agreeing with. I'm willing to bet that both consoles have a good launch, constrained primarily by supply, and not demand. Furthermore, a year or two from now, PS4 and Xbox One sales are going to be in the same ballpark (a few million apart, not unlike PS3 and Xbox 360 situation this gen), or perhaps even in Microsoft's favor, if their media aspirations connect with the wider audience.

Pretty undeniable in my opinion. The people in charge of the XBOX One really screwed the pooch. It will be interesting to see if/how they recover.

I'm going to drop them for PS4 unless that indie situation dramatically changes.

The console market is in decline because the generation has been going on for too long, people want games with better graphics and more possibilities. How is shitty DRM that will reduce your rights going to increase the market shares of console? What the fuck.

That is what you believe. And no DRM was just a means to go DD only in the near future... something that we actually need to happen as developers for various reasons. The X1 is an attempt to broaden the appeal of consoles by building in Kinect, HDMI in, W8 compatibility and various other things. If it fails... expect the console market to shrink.

Every day I see more devs moving to mobile and more devs making more money on mobile. Keep on thinking it is because the "end of generation". Wait until we see the sales numbers in a few years time.

Are you trying to say that companies should NOT try to pander to the consumers, they are trying to sell their product to?

No I am saying MS is trying to cater for a broader audience... but ofc that audience is hated by the "hardcore" gamers. All consoles are just devices sitting under your TV... if you want pure gaming, you would play on PC tbh.

And apparently, according to you, MS doesn't want that?

They want(ed) to force a number of functions/accessories/systems/whatever that nobody to my knowledge asked for... so yeah, actually XD

EDIT: Remember, it was you that said "Sony just ass kissed all the hardcore geeks and people just bought it", impling that MS didn't. That is exactly where and why they failed to impress, IMO. They created a product that didn't have the consumer's wants/needs in mind, but instead focussed on how they as an organisation want to shape the gaming landscape.

go make your own magazine and then do not right what you think of this maters because its "journalism"

let me know how it feels to be told or forced to shut up because you can't express your ideas and your thoughts.
"jounalism " isnt all but facts. its facts and thoughts. thats why there are game reviews that scale from people giving a game 10, others giving it a 7.

are you mad at them because they are attacking your system of choice ? or it because you do not agree with what they believe ?

they are free to type whatever they want. if anything. i respect them for having some balls and saying what they believe in. even if it means hurting their relationship with MS/sony whatever.

Edge is considered as one of the best magazines if not the best about our hobby. Do you think this cover is worthy of the best in the media? It looks like a gamefaqs thread to be honest

Considering what happend the past few weeks, it's SPOT ON. If anything, they prove that they are on par with the public and their passion.

There is demand for xbo hate at the moment, that translate into revenue for publications that are taking notice.

Sure, but that is the very purpose of magazine covers and headlines. It is sensationalist, but again, that is its purpose. The article itself, however, should be the real target of criticism. Here, there would be nothing wrong with leaning towards a particular console if you can defend it objectively. In the end, objective customer advice ought to be the very purpose of game journalism.

Blatant false equivalency. That's an editorial, and it ran in on page 12 of the opinion pages (so thus presented as one). Call me when the front page headline of the NYT is telling me that I should buy an iPhone because it's the only choice on the market.

So is Consumer Reports shit when they put their choice for car of the year or the best vacuum value on their cover?

Broaden the appeal with a $500 price tag? What? And console sale numbers will be even higher than before.

You have absolutely no reason to say this because you haven't read the article.

Completley throwing darts in the dark.
I judge the cover that is perfectly readable and watchable in the OP. Thanks

So is Consumer Reports shit when they put their choice for car of the year or the best vacuum value on their cover?
Not as much because it implies they made a ranking and it's less strong than saying "this is your next console" "why PS4 the ONLY option right now is PS4". What consumer reports says is "we guarantee this is the best you could get according to our criteria".

Consumer products arent allowed to be factually reported on? And what fanboys? Curious since my initial post was correcting someone who believes journalism should be all opinion.

MSFT will spend money to market their machine. Hopefully the consumer is informed enough to make their own decision.

Devs can go DD only already,MS drm policy did nothing to improve this situation.

Edge aren't going to sell a magazine by factually reporting on products that the Internet scooped three weeks before they went to print.

And the bad word of mouth continues. The next Mattrick has got a huge job ahead of him/her.

I dropped my hate for Xbox One on the 180 day. I'd still be interested in hearing some bullet points from that article.

Why, they're not being clear about a policy at the heart of their console? The hate lives on. I'm sure they turn on all the shitty drm one year in

So, let's get this straight.

-Microsoft announces a console that locks your games to their online service. They can only be played if you're online.
-They try to kill the used games market.
-They force a camera that most don't want, don't care and that is constantly on.
-They overprice the console a full 100 dollars/euros than it's superior competitor.
-They insult gamers everywhere with every single piece of PR.

They made the most cowardly U-turn after sseing how badly the xbone pre-orders were, remove most of the draconian features, but also remove most of the benefits that it was supposed to have.

And you want to support this company? You want to give money to this company?

When GAME PUBLICATIONS are looking for YOUR RIGHTS, you condemn them?

You want to defend the company that branded their entire userbase a thief?

Why would anything change?

Why do you think ... the DRM reversal ect.

It's clear it's what Edge is pissed about. They wouldn't vote for PS4 priced on specs and price so ... obviously.

When is the mag out?

Damn, talk about close minded.

X1 was anti consumer for a lot of people and they deserved the flack. Some people were looking forward to the features though and the DRM/Online didn't affect them.

Now with it gone people are still stupid? Because Xbox One looks most appealing to them and has the games they want, they should get a PS4 because you don't think they should support Microsoft? Egotistical.

Uhh did you read the thread? The article references the DRM reversal.

That's still a false equivalency. xxx of the year awards are cumulative, and the latter is essentially an expanded review. This is prerelease coverage on an unreleased product, and this coverage is headlined as telling you to buy the product, as it is the only choice. That is an advertisement, or when presented as an editorial as this is it is commonly refereed to as an "advertorial".

Ouch.

I'm willing to bet that both consoles have a good launch, constrained primarily by supply, and not demand. Both will be constrained by supply, but the XB1 a lot more so than the PS4. Judging by rumours and other data I predict Sony will have more than three times the amount of units available at launch. Of course, fairly or not, this will only add to the public perception of the XB1 as a failure.

The bolded part is just not happening, outside of your most vivid wet dreams. Sorry :/

I guess anything for or against these days means bad journalism or bias. Sick and tired of this notion that everyone must be pleased; you can't speak out due to negative backlash.

Why would anything change?

MS could drop the price by $150, or score some real permanent exclusives and not just the "here is some money not to mention PS4" kind. It's early, things can change. But right now, for gaming only, Xbone is really uncompetitive.

bu but they got Gears! they got Halo!!

MSFT will spend money to market their machine. Hopefully the consumer is informed enough to make their own decision.

I'm sure they are and will be, thanks to Sony, media, word of mouth and all that. However, I'm positive that Xbox One will do well regardless, it's a capable console with a great software line-up, great OS, entertainment and social features, and a differentiating (and price-inflating, obviously, at least initially) camera that a couple dozen million people didn't mind paying $99-$149 for even in its more primitive and less integrated iteration.

Even if Xbox One flounders initially (which, again, I'm quite positive won't happen), it's naive to think that necessary adjustments won't be made until it's accepted, just like in PS3's case before it.

No I didn't, that surprises me. There is very little in it and I don't remember them championing PS3 because it was more powerful last gen.

PS4 - X1 difference will be bigger than PS3-X360 difference. And PS3 was more expensive + had less exclusives at the start.
