Forza 5 will require a day 1 free DLC download

What really gets me is the irony of Microsoft's quote after their 180:

"After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again..."

They really are cutting it close with their first party titles.

Looks like it's not required after all.

More at the link.

edit: beaten by seconds lol

Hate to say "I told you so", but guys, I told you so.

Its like forza 3 and 4, only second "disc" is in the cloud, so they could have this extra month+ to add the most content they can.

Like previous forza's, you can only play the game using the first disc, but you'll be missing cars and tracks..

People who don't have internet?
How come they can afford to spend $560 plus tax for something they haven't had time to read about and get a good idea of what they're purchasing (lest it be a waste), but not spend $15 a month/$180 a year for Internet?

Implying that "they" exist.

I sure as hell can't get broadband in my area for $15 a month. Nor can most of the US.

I remember hearing that that was the average amount Americans pay for internet. I may be wrong, though.

The point I'm trying to make is that people are making up this group that has no internet and is spending hundreds of dollars to buy a gaming console on launch (how they knew its launch date and game lineup is a mystery) along with at least one game, including tax. Logically, such a group should not exist, or at the most, be very small and not worth bending over backwards for.

Maybe dial-up, but broadband can be some expensive shit.

From what I could find, the AVG. cost in the top cities is $38 a month. I pay $53 for 20/1 with TWC.

I'm glad that they've revised their statement on day 1 patching, but I read that first press release thoroughly and their initial position was clear.

It's exactly like Forza 3 and 4 except that you don't get the extra content on disc even though you paid for a disc version of the game and can not play the extra content you paid for unless you log on and download it online, which effectively means without a mandatory day 1 check in to microsoft you won't be able to enjoy the full content you paid for.

Which is unacceptable bullshit.

I was obviously NOT getting the Xbone but even if I was, I would have been completely skipping on Forza 5 just as I skipped on Forza 2 for being a lazy Forza 1.5.

The one game series that could sell me on Xbone is effectively unselling me on the system, justifying my every suspicion about Microsoft's motives and their ingenuinity in lifting always online restrictions.

Good going T10 and Microsoft. Fuck you both.

Firstly, I think you need to look at the cost of high speed internet. Secondly, maybe internet isn't available in their area.

People who don't have internet can't even set up the xbox one.

If you don't have internet it's the wrong console to buy.

You can set it up using several sources of internet. If you have a smartphone, it's essentially possible to set it up everywhere. I could set it up on a mountain cabin using a smartphone as a mobile ap device, even on shitty Edge technology if I don't have 3G coverage.

I sure as hell can't download gigabytes of content everywhere though.

Dude, I have internets. Most gamers do.

What I dont want, is a fucking machine that dictates that in order to play a game, that machine needs to be always connected, and with a hightech camera&microphone (with their own operating systems-> not games OS's) up my face.

Now, the "always connect" part is gone.
Let me know when microsoft retreats so that I can physically REMOVE the kinect, then maybe I will become a customer again.

No need for one more dose of "how do you post on gaf if you have no internets?" drama

Microsoft made a huge mistake. Its cool, shit happens. But they need to take back ALL their stupid shit before its too late.

Most of the neighboring cities i live around cant have access to high speed nets and everyone i know who lives in them still has an xbox 360 or ps3 and do plan on getting next gen consoles. 3 of the five surrounding cities dont have the infrastructure for high speed internet. its not that they are small cities just too spread for it to be profitable for lines to be run at current cost for the cable companys to care about it at this point.

and my internet is 60 dollars a month. the second tier option, 40 a month is the cheapest around here.

Geez - calm yourself. All companies are doing what they're doing for one reason, to get your money. They just strategize differently on HOW they will separate you from your money.

Out of curiosity, because obviously you're online to post, do you not have Internet to download the DLC or is it simply a matter of principle?

Here's how it went:

Turn 10: Were not going to make launch

Microsoft: You're going to make launch

Turn 10: Were going to make launch

Yes, most probably its exactly like this.
Still, judging from the past, not much different for t10 than what happened in their past releases,
they trim down to the most they can deliver in their given time frame.
Biggest difference here being the new hardware. But at e3 we saw they have reached their goal of 1080/60, so no real problems there.

Bottom line: a launch console is about 500% better complimented if it has forza on the side, than if it didnt have it. 8)

The 'how do you post on GAF if you have no internets lolz' drama is kind of getting boring. I'm not buying Forza 5 out of principle - if I pay for content on disc I want it to be on the disc. I will not buy it to finance and reward Turn 10 for missing their targets or Microsoft pursuing suspect business models.

I'm not buying Xbone out of different principles.

But that changes nothing about the fact that the Forza 5 situation and the Forza 3/4 are nothing alike.

This is a silly question. He could be online on 3G with a tablet. He could be online with a pretty slow or unreliable connection. He could be online with a small data cap.

You dont know the size of the patch (or "Free DLC"). It could easily run up to multiple GBs in size. Even if you have internet thats not conveneint for a lot of people.

Not everyone wants to buy a game on disc and then wait hours to get the "full" version. Is it really that hard to understand??

That was how it would have worked for the always online stuff.

The console requires a day 1 patch to remove the DRM stuff. That one is likely to be bigger than a few kb.

So what happens to the people that buy this day 1 but has no internet connection?

We'll never know, without an internet connection, they won't be able to come on GAF and tell the world??

I think whether you like it or not, with patches/DLC etc, we are heading more and more to the passive internet requirement.. GT6 will have monthly track DLC.. so in 20 years time you are still only going to get a fraction of the 'experience' an internet connected (DLC Downloading) user would have got today..

If it bothers anyone that much
1. Buy an XB1 when they come pre-day 1 patched
2. Wait for a re-pressing of FM5 that does have all the content..
3. Maybe even wait until the very end of the console cycle if you want a more reliable console that will stand the test of time..

I knew the tread would be full of whining but I had to check anyways.
I think this is awesome.
The game we get on the day it is released will be a bigger game and better experience due to development not stopping once the disc is printed.

Sounds good to me.

This crap has to stop. Seriously. Who are these people that are without Internet connections? And why would they be purchasing a next gen video game console?

I want everyone that posts on gaf and follows the video game industry that DOES NOT have Internet access to please stand up and be counted.

The video game industry should make ZERO concessions to people that do not have access to the Internet. ZERO concessions.

The Kinect decision is so that all owners of an X1 own a Kinect, so therefore the X1 market=the Kinect market, as opposed to the 360 market > the Kinect market. This way, developers who want to make games for/using Kinect will be more inclined to do so now that the market isn't like 1/4-1/3 of the base console.

Sony made a bit of a mistake, for better or for worse, when they chose not to include the Eye with their console. Now their controllers have a silly blue light on the back that can't be turned off and have no purpose.

actually its the opposite.

sony waited, and after they saw what happened they directly did the right thing.

microsoft on the other hand, does not look like they have the feline reflexes that they SHOULD have.

btw, I never asked for the kinect to be removed from xbox bundles. even though offering a "core" console without the camera&mic is the correct thing to do.
last time i checked, xbox is a global product, but many countries do not have cable tv, do not have most of the apps. so why the forced camera?

but anyway, what I asked is that I have the OPTION TO PHYSICALLY DETACH THE KINECT FROM THE CONSOLE, THROW IT AWAY AND THE CONSOLE WILL STILL FUNCTION.

if microsoft cant do that for me, then I can do very little for microsoft....!

How does that work though? The content still needs to be ready for launch so I don't understand the logic behind this.

It doesn't need to be QA'ed in time to print it on disc.. That saves time. Presumably, Turn 10 could turn it in on T-1, Microsoft could QA it (probably without really checking it) and put it on XBL for download so it will be there on launch day.

If that sounds rushed and probably buggy to you, that's because I'm willing to bet it will be.

Fair point. I honestly wanted to know, it wasn't sarcasm. He did confirm it was on principle though, not due to interment availability.

I appreciate your honesty. There is no right/wrong answer, I was curious. I do feel for most people it is a matter of principle. Anecdotes notwithstanding.

gaf account and paypal account says different.

but then again, why raise the "I bet it will be buggy" thing on gaf at the first place, if you are not taking any bets?

Because not all bets have to involve money; they can be wagered for fun or humiliation alone. I don't engage in financial bets at all. Take no offense, but especially with people I don't know at all.

How does that work though? The content still needs to be ready for launch so I don't understand the logic behind this.

Turn10 need to send the game off to get pressed about 6 weeks ahead of launch. They can work on the patch right up until a day or two before launch, so effectively they get an extra 6 weeks in development.

EDIT: Call it 5 weeks, as the patch would still need to go through Microsoft certification.

the underlying point is to try and not spread FUD.
no offense taken :)

forza 5 will be good. I'd say it will be the best racing game when it comes out.
still, xbox with forced kinect connected nullifies Forza and whatever else there is gamewise.

So, it's just like FM4 then?

I know nothing of game development so what can be done in 5 weeks?

5 weeks, at the end of the project when all their tools and pipeline are fully formed would get them a hell of a lot, especially with a team the size of Turn10. You'd be talking extra tracks, modes, tons of bug fixes. I imagine their cars take longer than 5 weeks from start to finish, but if any are in progress then it gives them time to finish them off.

Its not a refrigerator its a water cooler.......sometimes the water needs filled up.....

Seriously a half finished game .......?????

Wonder if this is their stealth way of stopping the game being resold???? I would assume its a onetime download for that copy.....so hang on isnt that DRM???

There are a ton of people who play video games that don't follow the industry or post on forums and a ton of them don't have internet access.
NeoGAF is not a full representation of everyone that plays video games.

Fair enough. I thought more like months, not weeks.
