ASDA no longer stocking/selling the Wii U in stores, won't restock this year

Wii U is fucked. Not Nintendo.

Their future consoles are probably fucked as well. With the U's performance, I'd say their image as a console maker has taken a huge hit. Microsoft and Sony are the "go to" guys now, while Nintendo is becoming the next Sega.

Still, stupid to not even stock Pikmin 3 XD
Yes, here we definitely go. I don't think it's that stupid not to have stocked Pikmin 3, despite the chart position. Wii U is beyond saviour in the UK and it's not even been a year. This thing's gonna die faster than GC did at retail, and all Nintendo has to thank for this is itself. Bravo, Nintendo. Serves you right.

I did not know that.

Crazy.

Not sure how you could have missed it? Are the smaller stores not Walmart branded then?

Still too early to say, Nintendo could still pull it back from the brink as they did with the 3DS.

Could, but Nintendo's bread and butter where they barely have competition sales wise is their handheld division, Wii blew a massive wad at launch then cooled down overall, I'm seriously not seeing how they could do a comeback beyond trying to reach Gamecube levels of sales, especially with the hype of the new shiny consoles with a constant stream of new games in November and beyond.

3DS has never, never, EVER been in such a dire situation. It was in a bad situation, but this is another level of bad. Heck, IIRC, Vita didn't see stores not stocking it anymore so soon after launch, did it?
Which is what I find weird. The Wii u was selling great in America in the first month or so. Was it selling bad in the UK in the first few months?

I would buy a $99 Wii U.

I may even get that chance if things don't turn around. Until there is a 3D Mario and 3D Zelda....I'll wait.

3DS still had pretty much whole monopoly in terms of dedicated handhelds.Sony is "just there" with PSP/Vita.

Now in home console ecosystem you have HD twins with great library and two next-gen systems that everyone is raving about.

I just think WiiU is an unappealing product in the eyes of average person.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Yes, it had a worse launch than Vita, saleswise.

The Wii U sells for as little as £150 (new) in the UK

Price cuts don't work

They will when the software is there.

The software isn't there yet, it will be in a few months. The complaints about the Wii U are pretty similar to the 3DS.

Price and software. The 3DS price cut bumped sales a bit, but software is what really helped it gain momentum. Nintendo needs both.

I work for the company that owns ASDA... They have had abysmal levels of games for Wii U on the shelf. When it launched... I saw about 20 people come in to pick it up. This is bad... Wii U has potential.

It is a shame. I worked for GAME last Christmas and after the initial week or so (maybe less) hardly anyone bought a Wii U title.

Nobody understood what it was. Whenever people asked where the new Wii games were, we had to explain that they weren't being produced anymore because of the Wii U. They were completely shocked. Most people genuinely thought the gamepad was just an accessory for the Wii.

The fact they haven't made an official price cut makes it seem like Nintendo have almost given up

It had a bad launch in the UK. From what I remember one of the lowest sales numbers over the first weekend for a new console.

I have no idea why Nintendo didn't just enhance the Wii by moving the console to true HD then improving the controllers just like they do with their portable devices.

Not all stores are Walmart branded. I have a superstore near me and there's no additional branding aside from Asda.

This is a very good point. I guess I'm just hoping that Nintendo don't let it flounder and eventually die. Would be a damn shame to see them drop out of the home console market in favour of focusing on the handheld market, even though, as you rightly say, it's where they are at their strongest.

You're right of course, but I remain hopeful that Nintendo will pull it back from the brink and not allow it to become another Gamecube.

I really do wish they were a lot more aggressive instead of just sitting back while their home console slowly dies.

Something similar happened in New Zealand a while ago. A prominent tech store sold off all remaining stock at $199 and called it a day.

Oh well that sucks but why are they not stocking the 3ds in store?

Nintendo just sell the Wii u through your own website and cut the price since there is no retailer mark up.

I don't think the software will be there in a "few months". Donkey Kong and NSMB 3d World are more likely than not just more NSMBUs, conservative sequels to previous titles that won't convince many to purchase the console.

Nintendo will have to put in a lot effort just to make it a gc. Its that bad

A whole year headstart should mean a big advantage as seen with PS2 and 360, you are suppose to establish your new console, fade out the old one, and release enough games to really put pressure on the newer consoles coming out.

Yet this is the opposite, they are beating themselves while the competition is still months away, by this time next year who knows how many retailers are selling the Wii U. So much pressure on Mario and Mario Kart to not just spike sales for 1-2 weeks but actually completely turn around everything around and stabilize sales at a much higher level against 2 competitors, yikes.

They are either incredibly inept or have some crazy scheme planned. Sigh.

Before fixing the WiiU, Nintendo needs to fix their game development situation by first hiring more people and two offering more genres, plus establish new IPs, Dark Souls and The Last Of Us really proved that New IPs can be successful.

As a Nintendo fan its really sad that the only games I'm really interested in are X, Bayonetta 2, Smash and the W101.

Why do the British hate the wiiU so much? Its picking up in Japan and starting to turn around in the US.
Is this a joke post or rose tinted Nintendo fanboy glasses? Wii U is screwed pretty much everywhere. It's at such a low that the only way from here is up, and even then, it's going to go up a little and fall off the side of a cliff.

Its worth noting that Asda has been having frequent firesales of the WiiU basic and Premium. I dont think a price cut, even with good and high selling games would entice them to reverse their decision. Unless the WiiU becomes a resounding success overight, its pretty much done at Asda.

I think people are using too much hyperbole when they say this indicates the Wii U has died. It's in a really bad place and it's going to be last this gen but one store not stocking it does not mean it's done. There has yet to be a price drop and more importantly all the big titles have yet to be released. The only big game released has been NSMBU. Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8 and Smash are still to be released in addition to a lot of other games. It's far from over. It won't be nearly as successful as Nintendo wanted it to be but they'll throw themselves at it before they allow it to fail completely.
