They are launching in 33 countries. October launch would mean that launch consoles would have to be shipped 3-4 weeks earlier from China, and there is no way in hell they would have enough consoles manufactured by then.

At this point, there's no way they can have a mature conversation with GAF without coming off as blatantly disingenuous except for what they are allowed to let us plebs know. After the Albert Penello comment, it would be better off to not have Major Nelson come here.

I prefer it to be free of salesmen, people can talk to the dude through official channels.

An incompetent PR representative who would likely make BS statements worthy of ridicule given the shocking state of affairs with their product would absolutely deserve the vitriol directed at them.
Penelllo's last couple of posts on these boards were effectively meltdowns and fully deserving of the reaction they illicited. Doesn't help the fact that Penello has contradicted himself and has gone out if his way to pretend he isn't PR.

Because ARMED GUARDS are protecting them. And because workers at factories/storage facilities/transport ships will get insta-fired and sued if they willingly allowed somebody to open boxes, especially now in pre-launch period.
Leaks will start when Sony's regional storage centers in NA/EU start delivering consoles to the individual retailer locations.

Sony's modus-operandi when it comes to showing their final retail OS is typically one-month before launch. At least for the Vita.
As for Xbox, I'm not sure. I can't remember how they did it years back.

Not necessarily, they can provide a firmware download or on launch titles discs. I bet both will have launch day updates.
No, not from leakers. I mean, if the retail firmware is finalized, why aren't we getting official looks at the OS now? I mean, if it's done, and polished to how they want for retail, they should show it off.
Sony showed off the Vita OS fairly thouroughly at the actual REVEAL of the system, as the NGP. And then I can't remember what conference or whatever it was that they showed off more of the Vita OS in a final state.

They showed UI at Gamescom a little. Pre-TGS conference is in 2 days. TGS is in 10 days. Launch is in 2 months.
There will be more media. Also, chances for day1 OS patch are high [Vita got one].
I don't mind Community Managers or certain developers coming here and providing insight into their games, or answering fan feedback relating to their game.
But people like Penello, and this Nelson moron, are there to do damage control mostly. They're also far too close to their work, and have a lock on their tongue in regards to what they're allowed to say, to answer many questions that could be thrown their way without coming off like a bunch of tools. They're a waste of time to be frank. The way they don't even understand how to approach folks is kind of embarrassing. And unlike when you're face to face with someone doing some PR interview, GAF is no holds barred so it rightfully holds back no punches when it smells bullshit. I like that about this forum. If these folks are not trained enough, or unable to handle that, then that is their problem.
I'm actually glad that the Sony execs or other public figures haven't come on here because quite frankly, it'd end up the same for them. Shahid ran into some issues too. Besides, some of them are already on here but just lurk and don't post. It's in their own interest, believe me, to keep it that way.

Given the late release date announcement and all the other shenanigans coming out of MS HQ these days, I wouldn't find it hard to believe if Sony had a week or more of manufacturing done before the first retail X1 rolled off the line.
