PS4s Alleged Overheating Problems: Developers Say they Don’t Exist

I'll have to disagree with the people who are spreading the rumors and agree with the devs. I was at GamesWeek in Italy last week as press and I had an appointment with Sony at 5.30pm the second day of the show. In a small room they had set up a ps4 for the press to try. It was running since 8.30 am of the same day and every major press and news outlet got to try it. They did not turn it off once! When I asked the woman that was giving me and my associate details, whether they noticed any heating rumors she told me that they just received these PS4s for the show and did not have time to test them in the office, she did however say they were the final hardware with only modified software that required a check in with a server every day for internal security reasons. She told me that I could go ahead see for my self whether it was hot or not. I swear to God I checked everywhere I even lifted the damn thing, it was not hot. I repeat the system was running all day long just like the rest of them that where there for the attendees to try. The Xbox One, on the other hand, was overheating a lot and from what I was told by the "Microsoft Tech Gurus" the demo units on display were not even the overclocked versions.

This made me burst into laughter!

Thanks! xD

I couldn't help but laugh at this little gem from him.

I have been reading this FUD about the overheating PS4 so often in the last weeks from many fanboys on other sites. Xbox fans are so desperate after nearly everything pointing to a good PS4.

I never put any stock in the rumor anyway.

Sony is smarter than to knowingly release a brand new console that is defective and risk the amazing amount of backlash they would receive. Same goes for MS. I am sure both companies learned very well to make sure their hardware is set up for longevity.

I like Beer- but unsubstantiated claims will not be believed!

He's got to grumble about something every week- and this is Sony's bit this week. Even though developers all say others wise (in addition the the great FamousMortimer!) I want to know why he'd put it out there. Where did he get this info?

I had the chance to use a PS4 for a couple of hours last week, and played a pile of indie games on it. I checked out the console hardware fairly thoroughly. It's quite warm at the back, it's insanely quiet, and didn't give the impression that it was in danger of melting at any point.

Just searched the thread and no one typed "Marcus Beer" or "Beer" (on the latter I did post something about a Beer Summit 2.0 though).

He must have got confused with CBOAT. oh well, fair enough then. Hope the overheating really is just an unfounded rumour. I was always concerned about such a small console having an internal PSU and those specs being reliable AND quiet.

I'll find out Christmas Eve.

Thank god this was my only real fear for so,me reason regarding the silence on Sony's end/peculiar lack of press diaspora. Thanks for the clarification OP/Mortimer!

Damn, how low can this guy go? Anything for the clicks

He was a colossal asshole to Phil Fish. Phil Fish isn't the most likeable of people but Marcus Beer did go above and beyond in harassing him for nothing but views.

I'm surprised they didn't just run with DLNA missing from the PS4 on launch... At least that is true.

They all were very clear in explaining that no console had any kind of overheating issue during the events, and trade show conditions are just as brutal than the development environment.

This is very encouraging.

Or you should do you job and actually check with as many sources as possible as well as with developers before even running a "rumor" like that. It doesn't seem like Dualshockers had any trouble getting into contact with multiple developers to shoot it down. You can expect a company to shoot down every rumor someone decides to claim came from their "sources".

To be fair, he's not a journalist, never claims to be one and openly rejects any claims that he is one.

That said, I can't figure out why he started throwing out this BS about Sony and the PS4, especially since he's basically been swinging from Sony's scrotum since about mid-way through 2012.

maybe his "sources" were actually saying the PS4 was creating overheating problems....in their pants. And he just heard wrong. Could be an honest mistake.

Woah.

So, it is not up to the person spreading the rumor to back it up, but up to Sony to disprove it?

Even if he isn't a journalists id' think that he'd owe it to his listeners to make sure any rumors that he runs are something with a solid foundation. This doesn't seem to be anything like that. It just sounds like some bullshit that was cooked up when people saw that picture of a PS4 in that small case.

Out of curiosity were there really rumors that the PS4 was overheating? Outside of the "PS4 in a unventilated plastic box" one, which never made sense to begin with.

I feel bad for the few decent ones like jason schreier, but no matter how horryfing, that cinemablend article about the doritocracy was spot on.

Over the past few months how many journos and media personalities have revealed themselves as nothing but sleazy hitmen with cameras and computers.

But hey, this gets them hits, which means money.

I do not remember any news of that back then. Really it took some time for RROD to really blow up and become a huge thing. Its the biggest hardware failure in the history of the industry.

There is no way for Marcus Beer or his "sources" to have any kind of substantial data to draw from to proclaim that the console has overheating problems. Because you need millions of them out there, under all sorts of conditions, being played by all sorts of people in all sorts of environments.

It came across as him being upset that he did not get a console before the general consumer, and decided to lash out and cling to whatever "rumor" he found on Twitter. That and well, making a negative "angry" video is part of his Angry Gamer persona, he is like the father of Angry Video Game Nerd and Angry Joe, at least James Rolfe and Joe Vargas do their jobs to entertain people not spread misinformation.

Every console has a failure rate, the question is just how high it is. And there is way Marcus Beer or any and all of his sources know that at this point.

Yeah I don't really get this whole 'angry' persona. At least Angry Video Game Nerd is kind of an ironic joky name, and Angry Joe is actually pretty happy and excited by games a lot of the time. It's not that they are limited by being angry all the time. Some people are going really hard into this angry/annoyed nerd persona. I'm also not a fan of Marcus Beer and the attitude he has displayed, he seems to break out with rash, angry comments at other people at times. Not a fan of the guy, personally. But it seems there is an audience for that sort of thing. I feel like people should behave a little bit better and treat others with more respect even if it's easy to belittle them with snarky comments.

This is hardly a surprise to b honest. Ive left my ps3 on countless times in the past 5 years for longer than 24hrs and has barely felt hot. Guess it helps that I live in a cold'ish environment lol

This reminds me of the IGN idiot who was worried because he didn't see retail PS4 kits. lol
All because Albert was bragging about his X1 retail box (that was a dev kit designed to look like a retail box lmao).

Why do these journalists pros say so much stupid shit that make no sense?

You can immediately tell intent by how defensive one gets when people point out they should do their jobs. "Oh hey, maybe you should... you know... contact people? And ask? I mean, before you attempt to smear FUD around the room."

Is it me or is this a badly shopped red line with a bit of smudge tool sprinkled in there? Should have used the line tool to avoid the aliasing. Not easy to draw straight lines with a mouse.

This is not a photoshop. it just overheated due to the plastic container. It was fine immediately after they opened it.

The first gen PS3's tended to overheat after some time. That's not to discredit this first-hand account that you quoted. I believe it. But the first gen PS3's were loud, and got hot pretty quickly. There are many accounts of them dying after a certain period of time. I remember reading a gaf topic where everyone was like "yep, PS3 fats are a ticking time bomb." My friend had a fat PS3 and that thing would sound like a vacuum cleaner with the fan when it started to get really hot. It also failed pretty recently. My 2nd gen PS3 is very stable though, and doesn't really get that hot. I assume last gen was just a troublesome time for hardware considering the kind of new tech that was being used.

It does seem like Sony has done a better job at making this new hardware, or at least after last gen with PS3 and 360 issues, both companies seem to be aware of that issue. At least I hope they would be.
