PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

So went through the thread to collect data and there's now 19 of us GAFers with broken units from the Hongfujin Yantai China plant, mostly manufactured in September 2013 (three were August), and the majority of which are suffering from the same issue (console arrives DOA - never boots up, just a pulsating blue light aka "BLOD"). Most of us have also purchased from Amazon so there's a clear pattern here:

Mine is from there as well and I got it from EBgames Canada, the only issues I have are connecting with some certain game services and Warframe patch Lockup which is probably the thing that made me the most nervous.

but other then that its been working real good played Knack for a few hours, put it on standby, never fully turned it off as of yet....

21.5 Samsung B350 Series T22B350N as my tv/monitor just for games but will be switching to a bigger tv when i get a new one so we'll see if there is any problems there

What is he supposed to do about it?

Got mine this evening. This was going to stay in the box until Christmas as a family gift, but now thinking I should probably break the seal and check it out.

I'm in Los Angeles, and my PS4 shipped from the Amazon Warehouse in Phoenix, AZ. Anyone else here in LA get theirs the same way? And is it working/bricked/doa?

I would check it. I live in LA, got my DOA paperweight from the same warehouse. It was made in Hongfujin Yantai China plant dated 09-2013

Some people are under the delusion that corporate mouth pieces are supermen that are able to simultaneously control every aspect of a mega corporation. Or he's an idiot that thinks complaining to Shu will somehow net him short term VIP status and get him to the front of the line. Either way, smh.

Or maybe he's just voicing his displeasure? Nothing wrong with venting.

It seems to me that Sony have dealt with high demand by increasing their failure rate tolerance. Or maybe the failure rate isn't that high but we know about almost every single broken hardware because the in the past years the internet became so transparent with the spreading of twitter, facebook.

I think it's the latter one.

This is extremely worrying. Especially since I am importing mine so in the case it were DOA I'd have to pay to send it back(don't know how much) and pay about 120USD to receive a replacement. Mine would be arriving on Monday from amazon, so hopefully there'll be more info regarding this problem by then. Is anyone else here in this situation? Mine's coming from amazon orlando, any DOAs there?

I have one of the "bad batch" systems. It booted up just fine and installed the update just fine too. I've been messing around for like an hour with Netflix and are so fun and so far it is still working fine.

Good luck to everyone.

Got mine from Amazon in Orlando and its working fine.

My advice is to not try to do too many things at once such as downloading 5 apps and games at the same time. Let the firmware update finish first and then work on 2-3 apps/games.

My unit is working fine but every time I turn it off it blasts a bunch of noise onto the TV screen... scary. I think I'll just suspend from now on and hope a firmware update fixes it.

Ok so, my video and audio will suddenly stutter and then my video comes back a second later, but my audio does not. To fix it I have to either unplug the HDMI and plug it back in or switch the input on my TV and switch it back. I've tried different HDMI cables so it isn't a faulty cable. This is an Amazon console. Anything I can do?

I just checked and it looks like mine is from the Hongfujin September batch. I don't know the significance of this but there you go.

Ok, got it from Amazon. Launch edition. No hardware defects that I noticed. Had to install the update via USB and logged in fine. So far so good. *knock on wood*

I don't think so. iPad's sell in way higher quantities than VG consoles do yet I never hear of journos and lots of people getting broken stuff. I don't know if the PS4 failure rate is high, but it's definitely not low.

Yep iPhones and iPads sell in crazy amounts and you never hear even close to a swell of failures like this..

well one of the reasons for this is apples really really high quality control. For example they only use A++ panels for the thunderbolt displays. Also apples customer support is way way better than anything out there.

Mine is from hongfujin, sept batch. Now yall got me worried ;_;

What made this batch what it is? All batches will have defective units so what makes this one more special?

I remember back with the 360 people were making big deals of like the manufacture date and so on but they were pretty much equally faulty until the slim redesign.

Yeah I guess they can pay extra to get the good Foxconn factories

The "Sony loves gamers so much" sentiments since the E3 reveals, I wouldnt be surprised if people honestly expect them to have Kaz come round and deliver new systems personally.

I am still not comvinced by the profile of the PS4, with how tiny and slim it is, that longevity wont be an issue. But in saying that, I have for over 2 decades now always been sceptical of Sony products as a whole. I never had any luck with them and they always seemed to be priced at a premium with some sort of Sony tax when the products just didnt seem to be anything above the competition. Even little things, like cd disc mans using shitty headphone jacks when companies like Panasonic were using gold plated connectors, just small but things.

Mind you, seems to be the way with all companies now days.

What the hell are you guys going on about?

This time though, I asked questions. Of course, the Apple Store employee who helped me out wasn't a spokesperson for the company, but he did have some good insight. He said a lot of people have been coming in lately with broken iPhone 5 home or power buttons and the problem has been reported up the food chain to the big shots at Apple. (My colleague Kevin Smith had a broken power button on his iPhone 5 too.)

That's not a good sign for a device that's only been on the market for about eight months. These things are supposed to last about two years, not a few months.

The experience reminded me of a recent report I read that Apple is having some problems with iPhone 5s coming out of Foxconn, the Chinese manufacturing company it contracts to build its gadgets. According to Tom's Hardware, only 80% of the iPhone 5s made at Foxconn meet Apple's quality standards. Apple's contract with Foxconn reportedly requires 90% of devices to meet those standards. Apple does its best to send the faulty devices back to Foxconn, but unfortunately some slip through the cracks.

Like people have said before, all electronic products will have a certain failure rate. Usually those failures happen over time, such as RROD. It's somewhat alarming to see so many reports of units arriving DOA or failing within hours of use. My point is you dont really see that at launches of Apple or even other products, where frenzy for the product is at its highest and supplies at their lowest-- which leads to internet furor.

You're talking all relative stuff. Maybe you spend more time on gaming forums than you do on apple forums and don't see what you see now.

All we have right now is people just pulling stuff out of the air.

Mine is from the doomed batch and from amazon. I admit I was pretty nervous hooking up my system and going through the initial setup. I didn't use the provided HDMI cable. Got the firmware update and then loaded up killzone for around 2 hours. Took a break and then downloaded resogun and played that for another 30-40 minutes. Everything went surprisingly smooth. Going to try BF4 and NBA2k tomorrow. Hopefully I'm in the clear.

Like look at this for instance. What makes it a doomed batch? Because a couple vocal people said so? Mine is from this supposed doomed batch and it hasn't bricked on me so why is my voice/experience less important?

On Macrumors Apple stores would be burned to the ground if Gold 5s's were failing en masse.

I thought my system was bricked yesterday. It was stuck in update and nothing on screen. I kept hitting the eject button thinking it was the power button. I almost cried lol. Turns out it was fine, my cousin left it updating a game or something while I was at work.

There you go again. What's en masse? What tangible evidence is there for these assertions you're making.

Tangible evidence of PS4s failing? How about this thread? PS4s are failing-- either DOA or within hours of use.

En masse = "in large amounts". I made no reference to PS4s failing "in large amounts". My example was if iPhone 5s's were failing in large amounts, there would be a riot on Macrumors.

I didn't say they weren't failing to an extent but you specifically keep trying to point out that it's somehow above average failure rates but how you get to that point I have no idea.

updated fine, played fine

started to download resogun and blacklight, checked about an hour later system froze with psn down for maintenance on the main screen, system wouldnt respond to controller inputs or touching the power button

held the power button until system turned off

should it just turn back on when i try it again tomorrow?

Im not exactly sure how you're reading that into my comments. No one here knows the actual failure rate-- my comment that seems to have ruffled your undies is in reference to outbursts of internet furor during product launches.

I'm pointing out that apple has had their problems you just either weren't paying attention or don't remember them which is a common mistake to make.

Sony did release a statement about hardware failure issues, but they said something like only 0.0004% of systems had problems.

And I tend to believe that, even though I'm angry as all get-out at the moment. I mean, if the number was something like a full 1%....GAF would explode, financial analysts would already be predicting a sharp drop in Sony stock, and the streets would run red with Sony exec blood.

But look at me....my Launch is ruined, my (working) PS4 won't arrive for at least two weeks - realistically three weeks what with Thanksgiving and all - and yet I still just purchased the additional two-year warranty after finishing up my recall order. Yup....I'm a sucker...

Why not return it to amazon? Some retail places should be getting new systems this week I believe

Got the BLOD, Sonys sending out a box and now Amazon is willing to do replacements, both can be cancelled so essentially its a race to see who is faster, thought I'd leave this here for folks who end up bricked w/ Amazon consoles.

I know earlier they were only offering refunds.

Here is a european PS4 unboxing video. He says it is the retail version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNorBCfHItQ

I'm pretty sure the box is different. Maybe another factory?

That's really interesting. The box is different. Basically, we have the same box you guys have, but instead of it having any artwork printed on it, we have a completely blank white version of it, instead with a cardboard outer cover that it sits in. Instead, that is the cover that has art work on it. I think I prefer the European box tbh, since it doesn't have those visible seems where the lid folds out from.

Those PS4 brick things and all make me scared...

Why not opening a thread, with 2 groups: people who have a working PS4, people who have a bricked/hdmi problem, etc PS4? Then we can have a (little) idea of the purcentage of all this mess. I dunno if it's a good idea, I was just thinking about it now. :)
