Valve to hold Steam Dev Days conference in January (No Media).

Has someone said you can't do that?

Prototypes were wired. If it's possible to mix the two, I'd love to see it.

Valve is giving away quite a few machines:
At Steam Dev Days, Valve is also handing out free Steam Machines and prototype Steam Controllers to all 2,000 attendees, to help spur development for the new Linux-based SteamOS platform. They're getting the highest-end Gigabyte Brix Pro, an extremely tiny box just 4.5 inches on a side, which comes with the surprisingly powerful Intel Iris Pro graphics inside.

I thought this event was smaller but damn.

will stop using quotes and links from now on, bothersome

“Will they be releasing more expensive versions of the controllers?” Eventually they will, but initially just the cheap ones. #SteamDevDays

VR was an important driver behind why Valve wanted to develop a controller. #SteamDevDays

Thought I saw in a recent Polygon CES video where a Valve engineer stated that the touchscreen was the centerpiece of the controller. Guess not?

I hope they don't get rid of them :(

“How many simultaneous controllers do you support?” We support up to 16 right now. *Room erupts into applause* (lol) #SteamDevDays

I don't recall that vid. I thought the trackpads and haptic feedback was the main attraction anyway. At last year's CES Gabe did mention they'll only put a touchscreen on it if it makes mechanically and financially sense or something like that.

I do recall a vid with Bellinghausen, but they didn't mention touchscreen there.

This post describes a Battlefield 4 demonstration with a Steam controller with a touch screen. What's going on?

They’re showing battlefield 4 working with the touch screen. The touch screen is a game changer. It intimately connects with steam and games.

Lame. Always have liked the PS3/4 model where you can play wired if you want if you run out of charge.

There's nothing precluding this from happening though.

In fact, on the Xbox One controller you can plug it in when it runs out of juice and it turns into a wired controller, though it doesn't recharge the batteries which is a nice feature with an integrated battery pack. However, because I sit so far from my TV (~10-12 feet) that it's pretty impractical to plug in even my PS4 controller and play at the same time. I much prefer the AA approach as it's much quicker to switch, and then I can charge the batteries while I still play wirelessly. I do see the values to both side, but I prefer the AA approach.

Read further on. He says new controller doesn't have the touch screen. Don't know why they showed off the touch screen BF4 demo then? Maybe it's because they want to do it in the future?

No touchscreen?

Was the touchscreen plus haptic feedback going to be prohibitively expensive?

Perhaps the screen + haptic feedback causes unacceptable battery drain?

Someone said it became redundant due to some ghost mode thing. Not sure.

They said thanks to the ability to update controller firmware on the fly they no longer have a need for the touchscreen.

from that blog, I haven't see anyone tweet this

Valve is holding a competition – if you send a potential hire their way and they wind up hiring that guy, valve will personally buy you every game on steam right now.

Welcome address by Gaben

Gabe wants developers to take control of the Store and how they promote their games
Gabe: "Our goal is to make Greenlight go away. Not because it's not useful, but because we're evolving."

Steam Machines in 2014
Alienware's Steam Machine will be launching in September. Intel Haswell and NVIDIA hardware
As of today, there are about 75 million active users on Steam
"They said there will certainly be experiences on Steam Machines that won't be available anywhere else." (Source)
Steam Controllers will be sold through Steam and retail
Valve wants to focus not only on gaming, but all things people want to do on a Steam Machine in the living room (Music, TV etc)
Every Steam Dev Days attendee gets a free Gigabyte Steam Machine (and a Steam Controller is in the goodie bag)

The Steam Controller
The retail controller will no longer have a touchscreen. It'll have DPAD and ABXY buttons instead for backwards compatiblity
The retail controller will use AA batteries, this means the user can also use rechargable batteries
Biometrics are important, but the hands are not the best place to capture them
Core implementation of Steam Controller API is already available in the current Steamworks SDK
The Steam Controller API supports up to 16 controllers at once
Valve is keeping VR in mind while developing the controller
More changes to the controller are coming, they have just started processing beta feedback

Nice compilation here by steamdb that they are updating.

as a reminder posting the scedule for this page too

might ask a mod to put it in the OP

I thought they already said they wouldn't make games exclusive for SteamOS.

They have. They absolutely will not make L4D3/HL3/Portal 3 etc... a SteamOS exclusive. Exclusive to Steam is probably a safe bet, though. I'm more curious about big exclusive third party games.

I don't think making Valve games exclusive to Steam would benefit Valve in the end. Part of why people were jumping in on PC gaming was because they played those modern classics on their consoles and wanted the superior experience that can be only found on PC. I know that's why I jumped in. While Valve games are great no matter where you play them you can't even compare console and PC versions of those games. They're baiting people to their ecosystem and I don't think Steam even needs the boost of having Valve titles as an exclusives. That doesn't even sound very typical of Valve at all.

I thought they already said they wouldn't make games exclusive for SteamOS. That quote couldn't be more vague.

Assuming they are talking about games in the first place , even if they are it may not be some big AAA title like Half life 3 or something anytime soon( assuming they are making it a steam exclusive )

People aren't understanding what Valve was quoted as saying. They aren't forcing exclusives but they could see a situation where someone creates games exclusively for Steam Machines. This is not a very controversial statement.

from that blog again

I’m signed up to see the valve vr hardware. It’s behind a black curtain so no one can see it. Everyone who has tried it says it is mindblowing and blows crystal cove away. They need to call me to let me know when I can see it, so I need to save my phone’s battery. So no posts for a bit until then. Be back with impressions!
