The mythos behind it is actually cool, but too bad it's never actually appreciated in any of the games due to convoluted writing/storytelling.

That's true, but I think XIII-2 and Lighting Returns were an afterthought, after they realized they needed to recycle assets if they were going to release anything in a reasonable amount of time.

Don't forget about this canceled title, which we know nothing about beyond a trademark

Well... technically you are right... but two of the originally designed games in the compilation dropped the XIII moniker all together (Versus XIII and Agito XIII), one of those listed is simply a mobile companion to the other (Agito - to - Type 0), and the XIII sequels were created more out of necessity than demand. Again, probably not the way they wanted their ambitious FNC idea to go when it was initially created, no?

Also, let's not forget the trademark filed for Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII in 2006; a game which was never officially revealed and the trademark was eventually dropped. All I remember were the rumors that it was a DS game within the polymorphic FNC concept or the next MMORPG that may have been Tanaka's project before becoming XIV. We might never know.

Interesting to see that Chris Kohler wrote a whole article of pure speculation about Haeresis for Wired in 2007. This was even before Square shot themselves in the foot and announced XIII as multiplatform.

They are really expanding the story and lore of FFXV, hope the main game doesn't pull a FFXIII in regards to information on lore requiring you to play these other games to understand the story.

If the story revolves around the royal family and its role in the world, then expanding upon it should be easy and interesting. If they go full-on FFXIII where everything has a confusing name, nobody tells you what anything is or what is happening and all the world building is done through datalog entries, then it will be a disaster.

Just do what star wars does, focus on a character and how he interacts with the world. If something is weird for us, then it should be weird or new to the main character (or divide the cluelesness among the main cast).

Tabata has specifically said he doesn't want to use confusing terminology....

Talking about XV, when I joined the project, it was just at the point that we changed over from calling it Versus XIII to XV. And at that point, the world development and building had gone up until that time. There was a lot of crystal mythology mixed in, it was definitely part of the world. But when I came to be in charge of the project, we did a sorting through all the elements, the stuff that had to be in there for the story, and the stuff to take out or move away from. But one of the main things I wanted to try was to make sure you weren’t assaulted by the very specialist terminology used in the crystal legend straight away, so you don’t have to play Type-0 or any of the XIII games to enjoy XV. You won’t have to understand complicated concepts to get into. That was one of the main things I did that maybe moved slightly away from the mythology. But it’s still very much part of the DNA of the game and the game story. But there are no l’Cie for example in the game, unlike Type-0 and XIII.

It's not milking. Milking is when you have a success, so you hurry up and make a bunch of merchandise to cash in on that initial popularity as much as possible.

This is just hype marketing really. They release the expanded merch first to act as advertising and build hype for the main game so it'll sell more copies. It's fattening up the cow so they can milk it later. Good business really.

Or Noctis finds Regis alive but mortally wounded, and Regis gives him the last sword as some sort of climax leading up to the final battle in Insomnia to drive out the invaders.

This could be the Aerith moment for FFXV. Something powerful and with an impact that will leave an impression on the player.

I wonder how this would work, the travelling to different tombs. Did Lucis used to be a larger Kingdom? Because it would be strange to scatter the tombs throughout the game while explaining why they were built in the lands of other countries or kingdoms.
