Naughty Dog nearly had Crash Bandicoot game inside Uncharted 4

Wasn't Crash Bandicoot super popular in Japan? I was under the impression that was the case and it was always weird to me that a character that popular just dropped to nothing. One of my earlier memories was walking into a Toys R Us with giant Mario, Sonic, and Crash statues representing their respective systems.

I would say the thread title is misleading (regardless of the title of the source) since it indicates that ND was going to add Crash but something prevented that last minute, while the fact is ND is saying they'd would have done it if they owned the IP. Big difference.

What if they put some sort of replication in there instead? Like it was the same basic gameplay, but the character was a parody of his old self?

Because both are related, right?

Such strange magical thinking for a usually sober and rational forum.

i don't say it sure that a Crash will come back but it possible.
There's no way that a new Crash is riskier then Shenmue to make so if they was able Shenmue there is a small probability that they can get a new Crash too

But they make crash games.

Plus the original creators have moved on. It's not shenmue or last guardian in the regard.

You need a champion for the games. Crash has none.

How is this crash bandicoot IP worth if someone wanted to buy it

all I'm picturing is Kotick sitting at a desk with crash locked in a cage behind him.

How much would the Crash Bandicoot IP cost if someone wanted to buy it and if Activision wanted to sell it

Give me your guesstimation

While Sony could conceivably buy the Crash Bandicoot IP from Activision, if they're willing to sell it, thesame can't be said for the Spyro IP as its original developer, Insomniac, is an independent studio and does not belong to Sony. While they do develop the Ratchet & Clank IP, which is owned by Sony, would they really be willing to work on another Sony owned IP these days when they're much more motivated to creating their very own IPs? Unlikely it seems.

All of this to say then that a Sony acquisition of Crash is possible and maybe even likely, but the same can't be said about Spyro.
Spyro buyout is extremely unlikely not least because of skylanders.

The original creators want another crack at crash. Source? Some interview I can't find.

The thing is...
Skylanders and Spyro are 2 SEPARATE IPs.

Kids may know Spyro from skylanders, but I doubt he's THAT popular character in terms of how many fans he has.

Activision should really take advantage while they still can and make a Spyro game that the kids and the older fans will enjoy.

Kinda like how TMNT 2012 is loved by old and new fans.

Yeah but Jason Rubin is at Oculus and Andy Gavin writes books now. I do think they'd do another crash if it fell in their laps but they aren't in a position for that to happen.

Yes. They would still not sell the IP. Best case scenario would be they commission games from a willing third party but that is doubtful. They seem to have given up on those IPs.

Man, I almost forgot Crash Bandicoot was once Naughty Dog's baby.

From a cartoony anthropomorphic-animal platformer to Uncharted and The Last of Us.

It makes me wonder where they will go, once Uncharted 4 is completed. I would like them to work on a new IP, something that they haven't tackled before.

Reminds me of that qoute by Evan Wells how he sees the various iterations post-Naughty Dog:

Evan Wells said:
The co-president of Naughty Dog, Evan Wells, when asked how he felt about other developers working on Crash titles, replied, "It's a little bit like watching your daughter do porn."

Sorry if this has been asked before, but how did Crash end up with Activision?

Naughty Dog develop the first game and Sony published it. Did Sony sell Crash or something?

Universal used to own the IP for Crash and Spyro (Sony only published the game). They then sold it to Sierra, and then it was sold to Activision. Sony never had ownership of it unfortunately.

It was a bit more complicated than that. It ended up in Activision through mergers of parent groups with Sierra, Universal, Vivendi and finally Activision. Not quite sure how the IP changed hands in the meantime.

It didn't. It's a succession of studios bought and then merged.

The only interesting thing was the 3 game exclusivity deal that got extended to include CTR.

Yes that's what I thought. The IP was in Universal and they published some games under the Sierra label they had acquired iirc.

You know, they really could/should have done an Uncharted 4 level with Crash 1 gameplay like that joke level Insomniac did on Spyro 3.

Well now we have our answer for the next "mythical" title that people will ask for at every major trade show, besides HL3. Crash Bandicoot. I forgot how much people wanted to believe Sony somehow got the rights to Crash.

Rhythm games.

I want Naughty Dog visual novel dating sim game.

Does anyone want to help me launch an online campaign for a new Crash? I was thinking of putting together a domain with a petition and some suggestions but I'd like to collaborate with someone who is big into Twitter, as I'm not.

I think an R&C price of about £40 with a good length single player PLUS a level creator would be ideal, the level creator could be a lot simpler than LBP and really give the game legs.

You could even charge £60 and stick a full fledged kart racer in there WITH a track creator.

I'd lose my shit for such a game.

This is an awfully specific thing to "lie" about. Something changed between then and now.

Also of note: Activision is not credited as the copyright or trademark holder for Crash Bandicoot in the credits of Uncharted 4 or anywhere else in the game. However, Naughty Dog was required to list them as such in their art book in 2014.

Well, let's see what unfolds.
Because with no mention of the copyright it's quite possible they'd lie again to save this bombshell for E3.

Liars! Sony lied then and they are lying now! You will never kill the Crash Bandicoot hype! Never!
2016, the year of the bandicoot!

I feel like
bumping this thread right now might go a little into spoiler territory.
Indeed. I'd seen a thread about a potential surprise in UC4 but avoided it. Then this popped up and I figured it was new, upon going in and seeing the date I instantly knew I'd been spoiled. Oh well, not a big deal.
