Sony refused cross platform play in Minecraft

I guarantee you that many of the same people defending this move by Sony were calling for MS's head back when the news about them not playing ball with FF14 was new. You guys aren't fooling anybody for a second.

I'm not defending it, but this shit runs both ways

Edit: wait PS3 is g2g but not PS4?

Now that's truly fucked up

It's weird in my opinion, we have had developers claim that Microsoft were the ones holding back on allowing cross play. Now there are issues of Sony holding it back, which I'm going to assume is because they don't want this to be an opening for a hacker group to take advantage of any potential loopholes this could cause and face another network security debacle.

It would be great if all platforms were to allow this, it benefits the players but if a platform holders network was hacked as a side effect no one would care about the sentiment of cross play.

Also they don't want to lose that "Because that's where my friends play" advantage.

Even though Sony is dropping the ball, I cant see why they should feel inclined since they are market leader

We know MS wouldnt do the same if they werent wanting more players, and we know Nintendo isnt really a concern for their demographic

We also know Sony was wanting cross play last gen and MS didnt, right?

I mean, it feels like so long as there is a clear winner, they wont open up their console for the competition to piggyback off of

Because sony is market leader and they gain nothing by cross-platform play, actually probably the opposite.

This as a reason is beyond bizarre to accept. As the market leader you do things to maintain that lead. It'd be better to think Microsoft had a hand in the reason why not.

y'all should be ashamed
You do understand that Nintendo is a multinational corporation run by college graduates with years of experience, correct? Sony, Apple, Google, and Microsoft are all too. They all understand the ramifications of any deal they make.

I dont get it wither wouldn't they stop making games or deals if that was the case?

Or not work on stuff like PSVR or PS now?

Why are some posters here SO defensive about these things? It's like Sony isn't capable of doing anything wrong to them.

I love Sony and PlayStation but come on. There are some things that all companies can do better on.

Same reason Trump voters still rigorously defend him.

Their player base does. As a consumer I don't care about what the company can gain from this, instead i look at what we consumers can gain from it. This is a good feature for Minecraft owners and Sony is opting out, hence it's a shit move.

It sucks, but has this been bad press for them before? The question has come up before and it's done nothing.

At most I'll see some barking about here and on twitter and that's the end of it.

Yeah, let's be honest. It's not a good look but this didn't affect Microsoft during the Xbox 360 and it won't affect Sony now. I don't expect Sony to change it's tune unless Xbox gets back on top next generation.

They're just afraid that El Chapo will use Minecraft to build a tunnel and reach their customers passwords and stuff.

Real talk. Like..it's ok to not like something your favorite company does. There is no valid reason other than Microsoft giving some unfair conditions as to why Sony shouldn't do this.

With this, it sounds like Nintendo and Xbox versions will have access to PC player generated content. Will that be blocked from Sony versions?

Lame. I don't play Minecraft, so this doesn't affect me. But I do wonder now if other pubs may have approached them for cross-play & had to scrap the whole thing because Sony didn't want to take part.

So what we've known since Rocket League announced crossplatform. Same defense as before as well. It's blatantly obvious at this point and not really defensible. Hope they come around.

What players will Switch provide with its odd online system? IF anything, Nintendo's version gets access to MS already large pool of players, if MS are happy to provide that to Nintendo, why wouldnt Sony? Sorry that reason doesnt hold up.

Disappointing decision by Sony. Sony wouldn't be too negatively affected, if at all, by allowing this. Heck, it might even have been a boon for PS4 Minecraft.
Pretty much. Will kids buy the minecraft they can play with everyone or the minecraft they can just play with ps4 players? Sounds like an easy choice.

This is potentially far bigger than just Minecraft.

That's the thing.

Interestingly about Tekken 7, Harada said:

In response, Harada has reiterated that this isn't the developer's issue but rather a problem pertaining to console manufacturers and their security policies.

It appears that neither Sony nor Microsoft allow their consoles to be in the same P2P system as the other. So either a game can be PlayStation 4/PC cross-play compatible, or Xbox One/PC compatible. When some folks pointed out that Rocket League allows cross-play between all three, Harada reminded fans that unlike Tekken 7, Psyonix's title utilizes servers, not P2P connections. He then pointed out that both Street Fighter V and Killer Instinct are console exclusives so cross-play works in both cases.

Finally, Harada addressed those who suggested allowing both consoles to play with the PC base separately, stating that the developers can't and won't split the PC base.

In his own words, ”Don't ask me again."

I'm pretty sure Minecraft uses P2P when creating servers as you need to be online for people to join yours.

But from MS a year ago:

Cross-Network Play
First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Of course, it's up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players. We're thrilled to confirm that Psyonix's Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.
